lol, oh Roy. First he claims the AFL just got lucky because Rupert 'gifted' us an extra HALF A BILLION DOLLARS out of spite for NRL, now the NRL deliberately took unders to maximise exposure instead of money, with the implication that the AFL has done the opposite. Conveniently forgets that the AFL forces 7 to play local team games in NSW and QLD that they likely don't want to play, and that every local team game in SA and WA are shown on FTA in that market (albeit with 12 of the 44 on a 1hr delay).

Keep spinning Roy.

Rather than listening to journalists who haven't a clue (Gerard Whatley excluded), I'd prefer to get the facts straight from the horses mouth. Here's Kerry Stokes on SEN today:

Here is a man who has a strong sense of history and culture. He obviously loves Melbourne , it wraps around him like a Melbourne fog on a winters day.
And he has the vision to see that Australian Football, born in Victorian times, from a melting pot of cultural mixes and more importantly a moment in history, is something unique. He is awesome.

exactly right - it is absolutely laughable who wrong a 'professional' journo can get it. That article was written like a fan foaming on a forum ffs!

Whilst we get frustrated with the AFL - the TV rights is not an area they can really be faulted. The AFL gets the top dollar - and ensures key strategies which devalue the rights - ie the guaranteed FTA coverage for NSW and QLD (and all states for that matter).

If you look at this round, (and most rounds) - most, if not all of the games are FTA! The games are tailored to the market!

As you stated, whilst Adel v WCE is a national foxtel game, the game is shown live on Free to Air in both SA and WA.

I have posted time again, that there is so much footy on FTA I actually dont think it is a great deal for foxtel. I mean it is ok for them - but it doesnt drive the reluctant fan to get foxtel because so much of the game is on FTA in the local market.

If you want all of your teams guaranteed games on TV, and dont physically attend many, then you had foxtel from the start.

If foxtel wanted to drive subscription numbers strongly on the back of footy - IMHO they need to purchase a day, a full day such as Saturday and leave have it exclusive to them.

the AFL would never allow it, as they will always ensure 90-100% of the games are on FTA somewhere in the country every week.

Roy simply doesn't, and doesn't want to understand this.

Something for The Wookie Is this true?

A spokesman for Foxtel said, in an email: "While many subscribers love our coverage of NRL, the truth is that over the past five years the number of NRL matches in the top 100 programs on the platform has dropped from 73 to 22, over the same period the AFL has increased from 8 to 53. In addition, the figures you have been fed significantly overstate the number of subscribers who primarily take Foxtel in order to watch the NRL."

Just to note: as far as I can tell the top 100 live foxsports broadcasts this year go

NRL - 50
AFL - 37
Soccer (Asian Cup) - 7
Cricket (World Cup) - 5
Union (Bledisloe cup) - 1

Bearing in mind theres a full round in each of the AFL and NRL to come (as well as Monday night for this week), AFL finals and Brownlow, and a Rugby Union World Cup to come that will impact this list before the end of the year.

How does this differ so greatly from the OzTAM statistics? Where are these numbers from?

it also has to do with the broadcast deals, the AFL streams most of the games with the FTA while the NRL does not!
ill also point out the AFL channel has the highest subscription number on fox as well.
the NRL only has a strong popularity on fox thankx to the SL days &news forp
