The Aussie Media "Star" Guide

I don't think Crosisca being called a star is over the top. He did play 246 games and played State of Origin and in a premiership. He wasn't a superstar but not a dud either.

Drew Banfield played 265 ganes for West Coast and won two flags. Can I call him a star too?

Surely you aren't actually claiming that one? That's a pun, mate. That one is supposed to be there.

Great thread. How do new recruits work? Are they "stars" of their leagues before they join the AFL? Or is it exclusively AFL players? Also, what happens to the 23 Rising Stars each year?

A quick google search gives me these shockers.

He's an emerging star in softball and AFL, but double-play doesn't do Josh McGovern's story justice - this 16-year-old has a lot more on his plate.

Aspley Hornets claim another star in AFL draft.
Aspley Hornets can lay claim to a second player in this year’s AFL draft with the selection of former Sudanese refugee Aliir Aliir by the Sydney Swans at pick 44.
Aspley Hornets senior football development manager Mark Perkins said Aliir was an AFL star in the making who learned his football foundations with the Hornets before moving to the West to be with family.

Padthaway recruits ex-AFL star.
PADTHAWAY Football Club has pulled off one of the biggest recruiting coups in KNTFL history - signing two ex-AFL key forwards among a raft of gun new players. Scott Welsh, a former North Melbourne, Adelaide and Western Bulldogs player, and Ian Perrie - a 10 season veteran from Adelaide - head the list of 2014 recruits at the Lions.

Great pick ups. Never knew there were so many stars out there. How is this sport not a worldwide phenomenon with such star power??

I highlighted his star-ness last season, but time and legal troubles haven't diminished the star qualities of Marley Williams.

It looks as though there's a star war happening though. 7 News Melbourne, The West Australian and Perth Now have subdued their thoughts by labeling Williams a "rising star", whereas WA Today have gone the whole hog and given him the full star treatment.

Woohoo - a few updates today!

First off... it's been a few weeks, but Jake King's still a star according to news.com.au

(this despite Vlad referring to King as "a good player". Still a bit of a stretch if you ask me.)

Now... on the Marley Williams front!

news.com.au (bastions of star-ness) have led a general downturn in Marley's star quality, only referring to him now as a "young gun":

But the biggest downgrade of all belongs to The West Australian - who not two days ago referred to Williams as a "Rising Star". Now? Well, I'd say it's a slap in the face of poor Marley but given what he's been found guilty of... I'd say it's a sucker punch to the jaw:

And finally... well, this one's controversial. In the States, news have picked up on the story of a female American Football player who made her debut for an Arena Football Team. So, how do we judge her? Well, I'd say that since it was her first game against the men and she was pole-axed on a number of occasions, I'd call her a "trailblazer" at a stretch. news.com.au on the other hand (there they are again)? Nope - straight to the stratosphere for her!

You see folks, star power transcends sports!

And on that note - until next time in the star chronicles.

Further update on Marley-gate.

The West Australian has jumped off big time. In the space of a day, he's gone from "defender" on their website to today's front page of the newspaper where he's listed as... "AFL player".

Poor Marley.

In 1954 and 1955 there was a South Melbourne player named Don Star who played 20 games for the club. Obviously, he was always a Star.
