I know they are looking at 4 field umps, but is just going over the top?

couldn't we just have something like the NFL, 1 central umpire to adjudicate obvious free kicks and 3 or 4 sideline umps to check out of bounds and and off ball etc type stuff?

I mean 4 on the field seems stupid.
Agreed.

Number of umpires is proportional to the number of interpretations is proportional to the number of errors is proportional to the level of fan/player/coach frustration

There are enough umpires. They just need to do away with the 50m penalty and admit the SANFL has it right with the 25m ... and be more consistent week to week with holding the ball, holding frees to forwards, frees for ducking the head etc.

The skills coaches always complain that they don't get to spend enough time with the players working on their kicking to really improve them

I wonder if we'll ever see a coach go against the grain?

Invest heavily in goal kicking at training at the expense of tackling, team meetings, defensive structures and other training activities

Lower training intensity (and potentially fitness) to reduce the number of injuries at training and get your best team on the park more often

My understanding (happy to be corrected) is that during the season most of the time between games is taken up with recovery, not training as such (hence the need for a good preseason) and therefore extra kicking training goes against that.

Players are monitored for how many kicks they can have during a week so they don't get worn out, which leaves little room for goal kicking practice

Still, no matter how many dozen coaches or other specialists are brought into clubs each year, that is something that just never seems to improve overall.

I heard Leigh Matthews say once "that just goes to show how hard it is, doesn't it?":D

Why would thommo be wearing a revolution roofing jumper at the airport being interviewed about the weekends game, it said Victory something on the other side.
Why shouldn't he be wearing a sponsors top?

Hi All

Looking at tickets for Freo vs Crows in a week and have a couple of questions.

Where is the best spot to sit? Which spots should I avoid?

Have prices gone up for general admission from last year? I got good tickets for Port at $40, but the prices this year for similar tickets are 70+

Was taking my Dog for a walk this afternoon and ran into Kyle Cheney with his misses and hilarious dog weezer.

My Dog is half-mad and weezer was a champ to put up with her.

Was disappointed with his game on the weekend. Nice guy. Had a chat while the dogs played and kept my fanatical crows supporter status on the low down.

Will run into him again I'm sure. Will have to bide my time before probing too much with questions.

The cynic in me can see the deflection from Mick back onto Trigg and away from Mick paying a LOT of money for an injury prone Thomas and stopping the questions on why Carlton refused to pay Eddie $500K instead. It's all Trigg's and Eddies fault. Trigg while at another club sabotaging their club and impinging Eddie's honour in the implication that he was selfish and just didn't want to be there.

Mick now has the media talking about Trigg. His appearance on 5AA tonight will not be on the woeful performance of his team on the weekend, or his coaching future. It will be the 5AA hosts defending Trigg and Eddie instead.

I had that thought to. He's baiting Trigg for a response.

Caroline Wilson says Malthouse was spoken to by Carlton about his post match performances. Malthouse denies it. Caroline says an official told her. Someone is lying.

Carlton and Malthouse have a discussion. Malthouse and Trigg have different version of events. Not on the same page? Or telling porkies.

I figured this is to put heat back on Trigg.

Forget about the Carlton side of things - the news that Adelaide were in Betts' ear at least 18 months before he signed (probably 2 years plus) would be a revelation to some people around here. People look at the list of FA and say "we should be chasing player X, or why aren't we talking to player Y?". The reality is that the club is well on top of this and are already active in trying to bring players to the club 12-24 months before the deals actually eventuate.

Player manager says he didn't. Of course.

As believable as an episode of the Real Housewives of Melbourne, but with less bitchiness.
