The future of the ABC - Guthrie sacked

Unfortunately Turnball is a waste of oxygen as minister, should resign. Scott Morrison could be persuaded to take on the ABC and show Malcolm how it’s done. Turn that sheltered left wing workshop inside out with a combination of deep cuts, privatision and input to the recruitment selection process. Imagine a fair and balanced ABC? Would get the best prune-face yet seen from Senator Milne
I understand now.
You want "fair and balanced", as used by Foxnews.
You don't actually want fair and/or balanced news.

Well spotted.

Thanks to the aggregation that happened under Hawke, we now have the ABC, SBS, NITV, Imparja, Prime, Win, Southern Cross Ten, Southern Cross (FNQ/NT/Outback), GWN, Satellite services plus Seven, Nine, Ten and Foxtel.

It's really less than 20.

You named networks. There are hundreds of channels. Foxtel alone has over 100.

Oh great so we are arguing over semantics now.

The ABC as a tv station has 4 channels on its own as a tv station. That's hardly a massive drain on national resources. I ask this question once again - do we really need to follow the American example where there is no functioning national broadcaster, just a claytons handful of them lead by Fox, or do we follow the way of the rest of the world and have an official national broadcaster.

America is in the wrong on this one and has been since day 1.

Can't even use the quote function correctly, and calls me stupid.

Hey genius! What does the circular argument of this thread, which has been going for a year, have to do with large sections of the community, feeling alienated because of ABC bias???

$1bn is small change I guess. Who cares anyway, the 1% can pay for it. And the NBN. And free donkey rides at the show.

Why cant we have ABC2 and copy the BBC? Black Cats in pyjamas.

You just picked a post at random for that lil' rant, right?

$1.2 billion a year is actually a fairly big drain on national resources.

half the channels, no, all the digital channels could go, and retain the main one on the digital spectrum. The kids never needed more than Playschool or Romper Room in previous decades, i am with Murdoch and medusala on this, maintain all the radio assets and resources, tell Andrew Denton and Debra Burn to get farked, no private production with them being funded and keeping the rights, the ABC is not for their retirement and North Coast holiday palm beach house.

radio, and ABC traditional. They can maitain the traditional offer. Keep LAteline and 730.

But it is becoming like the Beeb in the UK and a massive drain and these bureaucratic organisms only move one way with the growth even if the conservatives come in with the whip hand every change of gov't.

the offer does not change much. All the luvv!es can still listen to Jon Faine and have a whinge about tory state gov'ts

it is, when they can maintain the core service, the foreign correspondents, the News, the 730/lateline and flagship, for a fraction of that. Keep the core, and refine the core offer, re:excellence and genius. Maintain the radio and rural service. Refine and improve, and if resources need to improve, redistribute to these sources.

But 4 channels, the K!Ds?

*, even RAAAAAAAAAAAAGE is overdue to be killed off now. Since John Safran got his dog on RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE it lost its avante garde credibility.

As has been stated probably a hundred times before, you do realise that the commercial stations don't actually want to have ABC spectrum freed up for potential competitors for the reducing TV advertising spend?

Suggesting that the ABC doesn't need '4 channels' is like complaining about the amount of pages BF uses. It doesn't actually change the backroom requirements much compared to the amount of more content you can get.

  • If you know someone with a child you would quickly hear how much busy parents are dependent on ABC3.
  • A substantial amount of local commercial TV producers (esp in comedy) got their start on the ABC.
  • Outsourcing to private production companies saves you a lot or money

The main hindrance to backroom savings at ABC are the old style contracts. People who have legal rights to basically work at the ABC forever. This same problem exists in a lot of public service organisations (and if you believe business types it is apparently a problem in every business because it's hard to sack someone because of some undescribed reason).

Mark Scott is on Jon Faine right now.

I don't know why some people are against FOX news. In the US is is aimed at a "niche market" - approximately 50% of the population.
Are you serious? Check out youtube with some of their on air videos.
They invented the word bias.
Where did you get your stats from and what 'niche' market' do they represent?

Good thinking Ratts. Lets outsource it all to Fox. Would save a bundle.

You are the voice of reason.

Fox is the most trusted television news network in the country, according to a new poll out Tuesday

Prefer @swindog link thanks.

Did you actually read it? its only 8% due to half not naming a channel. Thus of named channels its substantially more.

Fox > other channels. Swingdog managed to shoot himself in the foot.

Urgent: Should Obamacare Be Repealed? Vote Here Now!

Overall, 55 percent of respondents say that television is their main source for news, while 21 percent rely on the Internet as their main source. Only 9 percent now cite newspapers or other print publications as their main source, and 6 percent say radio.

In the survey of more than 2,000 adults, 26 percent cite television as their main source without naming a particular network or station, and 4 percent cite local TV news, while 8 percent say they rely on Fox News as their main source, ahead of CNN at 7 percent.

Remarkably, just 1 percent cite ABC or NBC, and less than 0.5 percent name CBS. Among other cable sources, a scant 1 percent rely on MSNBC, CNBC, or PBS. Other respondents cited very small percentages of cable news stations
