The Gap between hawthorn and richmond

1 thing we need to fix is our retention of the ball from back 50. You could be losing contested possession, but still be scoring by this method. It can keep you in the game, find a way to win back more of the CP's and ultimately win a game anyway.

They get gun players onto their list for unders.

Their best players play their best foooty when it counts most.

Cant wait to hear the news that Hawthorn have snared Bennell.

They have genuine speed and x-factor like Cyril Rioli, while we've relied on Nathan Gordon and Steve Morris to win matches up forward.

We need to recruit genuine class. A big fish. A doozy.

Pronto!

The difference is definitely the big days and how the Hawks stand up. We are yet to be really tested in that sense, truly. We needed to get past that mental barrier which is the Elimination Final. Do that and then who knows we might have been good enough this year.
But yeah when it counts, bloody hell their senior players take the game and make it theirs and the whole team as a unit is COMPLETELY in sync.
And their recruiting is sound as one poster mentioned, they fill needs whether it be run or a KPD when needed, and they have many if not a full 22 players who are not just very good footballers, but also win the 1-1 contests nearly every time. Players who often win contests are crucial in finals.

Pretty obvious atm Hawks have the cattle we don't yet

We are getting close, losing Jackson early hurt our midfield depth but there is a best 22 at the club that will be very strong in 2 years when the bottom end have all played 50 games.

We just have to continue to look to improve our list overall and ensure we retain our important players.

Guys like McIntosh, Lennon, C.Ellis, Menadue and McBean will be key in the future.

I honestly think sometimes hawthorn schedule to rest against us. Then we beat them and we think we are awesome. If we met them in the Grand Final, they would make us there bottom bitch.

We're not that far off. We finished 15-7, two games behind the minor premiers. We beat most of the main contenders (Hawthorn, Freo, Sydney) and got fairly close to the others (West Coast, North).

A bit of improvement on this year and a bit of a drop off from 1-2 of those old top 4 clubs (Freo, Hawthorn, Sydney, North) and we're top 4 and premiership contenders.

I just put it in context .

Hawks - played 4 consecutive GF's and won 3 on the Trot .

Tigers - played in 3 consecutive finals series and win zip .

Hawks far better side especially mentally , light years ahead in that dept .

- They do the basics better then us. No fumbling, no hesitation and almost every possession hits its target.

- They put a lot of work into their pinpoint kicking and possession of the ball, which is something we've been working at over the last few years but need to keep improving on.

- They realize that stoppages and clearances aren't the most important factor of the game. What's more important is how you use the ball when you get it, how you defend the ground when the opposition gets it, and taking your chances in front of goal.

- Most teams in the modern era play full ground zone defense. Hawks game plan is tailor-made to pick this apart time and time again. No doubt Dimma has tried to replicate much of that with us, but the reality is our skills and speed aren't up to the level required to do this consistently yet. We're on the way, but need to keep working on our disposal efficiency and running patterns.

- Hawks have dangerous small forwards which we don't. Dimma & co really need to wake up and address this area as its our single biggest deficiency at present. In the modern game most kicks inside 50 don't get marked no matter how good your talls are. Something like 70-80% of the time when the ball is delivered inside 50 it comes to ground and small forwards come into play, which is why they are so crucial.

- The flip side advantage of having numerous small forwards is when the the oppositions defense wins the ball. Unlike talls, small forwards actually have the mobility to pressure the oppositions defense into bombing away long, usually to waiting numbers camped outside the 50. Locking the ball inside our half of the ground has been a focus under Dimma, but its usually ineffective as too many times opposing defenses just walk the ball out with little to no pressure and hit up easy targets. This forces us back and catches us out going the other way. A good small forward or 2 will make locking the ball inside our end of the ground so much easier and more effective. This is one of our biggest concerns going forward and needs to be addressed immediately this off season.

Who did they trade in that was on their list in 2008?

They've built their list and then taken to trading well to stay on top.
