Oh I'm well aware and have nothing against the Scottish people (1/4 ancestry going back that way fwiw).

As a side note - and something you may get a kick out of, I heard Welsh being interviewed on RRR last year and he discussed the differences between writing fiction novels and journalism (which he had a go at but clearly wasn't for him).

I'm paraphrasing from memory but it was along the lines of journalists use facts to produce lies while fiction uses lies to get to a deeper truth.

Easily. Classics is a world about from the usual peace and gender studies type crap all too common in Australian unis. It came as a bit of a surprise to me when I started in the City that it was hardly unusual for people to have classics degrees, those enrolling in them were typically very bright.

As far as I'm aware Tony Abbott's greatest contribution to Oxford University was his unparalleled ability to get punched in the face. Pleasing to see that he'd taken this literal skill and moved it to the meta during his tenure as Prime Minister. Growth I didn't think he was capable of.

Obviously the economies of Rome and Greece are rather far apart from modern economies, but surely Aristotle, Plato, Homer, Thucydides etc. would all be the entry point for any study of Western Philosophy/Political history?

Or is it simply that PPE is to Classics as General Maths is to Specialist Maths?

he already has the facility with Greek and Latin at Eton. Now, although an Eton A level would not be equivalent to a degree from a proper college in America, it would rival anything we could offer in higher learning in the antipodes, if, if, if, their teachers were compenent, it is basically like one of those small liberal arts colleges in the States, like Pamona or Williams, 'cept they are highly centralised with aristocratic toff w@nkery at most of those public schools with a A-level in man on man love.
