New Aaron Sorkin series, starting on HBO in the US this week. Top shelf cast - everyone from Jane Fonda to Sam Waterston.

Most anticipated new show of the year, in my books - will be watching with high expectations.

    Should be interesting.

Reviews have been fairly mixed though. From okay to scathing.

If anything it'll make the wait till Breaking Bad comes on seem a little shorter.

Trailers look great, but a C+ review at AVClub leaves me worried.

First episode has aired in the US, so it's available on the usual sites.

I just watched it then, it has a shit load of promise, that's for sure.:)

I really enjoyed the opening scene but the next 20 minutes had me a bit flat. I wasn't sure whether I'd like it after that but it did improve considerably towards the end. I was hoping for more chemistry between the characters, it didn't quite seem there for me but maybe it'll come in time.

I quite liked it. The setup was pretty sanctimonious... I was okay with the rant until it went off on an anti-'young people' tangent that was a bit weird. But it's a good dramatic concept and I thought the way they positioned all the relationships in the newsroom was pretty interesting. I already want to see what happens with a few of the characters.

Sam Waterston's character was hilarious. Someone really needs to set up a 'Drunk Charlie Skinner' Twitter account.

Tons of potential, as long as it steers away from being too preachy. Don't think it really deserved the scathing reviews it got.

Really enjoyed it. Haven't heard great things about the next three episodes but I figure Sorkin can be pretty divisive and few people can separate their politics from the quality of his writing. So I'm not particularly concerned. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the season.

Yeah it was good. Cast is great.

The problem that most reviews seems to echo in that it's set in the past didn't bother me here. I worry though that it could become too sanctimonious for it's own good.

Will have to hit myself for not realising it was Jesse Eisenberg as the minerals official on the phone. Knew it was someone just couldn't put my finger on in it.

Sports Night was phenomenal. The Newsroom is not like Sports Night though.

Average to good pilot, typically has potential.

Having said that, as a disclaimer, I liked Studio 60!

The reviewers have seen the first 3 or 4 episodes and the general vibe coming through is that it goes downhill after the pilot. If that's true, we could be looking at a quick cancellation.

That's rather tragic. Particularly after what happened with Luck (which I also enjoyed)

    Just watched the pilot. Solid.

I liked how it was Jesse Eisenberg on the phone to McAvoy. Little wink to 'The Social Network'.

Wow, the critics really seem to despise this show. Most of the criticisms are related to "too much Sorkin preachiness" and "a disgrace to real journalism". I don't know, I thought from an entertainment perspective it was enjoyable. Decent acting, writing, all that jazz. I'm definitely going to continue watching, and if it gets cancelled, I certainly won't shed any tears like I did with Luck.

    Good winter filler program.

Thought it was a good pilot, was a bit slow in the middle but picked up towards the end. Kept me interested for the next episode.

Hell, I liked 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip', so I'll be watching this.

    Sorkin's a god to me.

Sports Night, The West Wing... just awesome.

Trust you to sprog all over that bit.

It was horrible stuff - hokey, sanctimonious, cliche-ridden and a poor imitation of Howard Beale's rant in Network.

Thankfully the episode got a lot better after that.
