CLASS OF 1925.
This poster from The Leader shows most of North's top players in their first season in the VFL. But by the end of the 1928 season, only two (Lewis and Trevaskis) were still playing at the club. Here is what became of them:

Wels Eicke--After a long career at St Kilda he came over to North in 1925 as they wanted an experienced player to lead them. But early in 1926 he returned to his old club.

Will Smith--North's first vice-captain. Had played with North in the VFA and left after 1926.

Cecil Gomez--Played in the VFA with North. Went to Essendon after only one year with them in the VFL

John Lewis--Easily North's greatest player of the era. Had his problems and issues with the club but stayed with them, enjoying little success, until 1935. After this he was still good enough to play a further three years with the strong Melbourne side.

Fred Rutley--Another old VFA player. Received a life suspension after the infamous Round 12 Geelong match. This was lifted in 1930 and he returned to play the last four matches of the season and kick seven goals.

Duncan Lindsay--left North after the 1926 season. Later played for Port Melbourne and Coburg and coached Bairnsdale and Mildura.

Jack Lock---Played with North in the VFA. Left after 1928.

Albert (Curly) Linton--A talented centre player from Tasmania who also played with North in the VFA. Played many good games but by 1927 was disenchanted with the club and had ceased training. At a meeting with the club at the end of the season he requested a clearance. Upon being refused he struck a club official and was expelled from the club.

Alf Goonan---Ex-VFA. Left after 1926.

Jack Doherty--Former South Melbourne star. Crossed to North for their first VFL season then left.

Trevaskis---Another North VFA player. Played until 1929 then coached the North seconds.

J "Dave" Walsh---Regarded by many as the best full-back of his time. Was a key player in North's return to the VFA after they disbanded in 1921. His career was tragically cut short by a knee injury in 1927 after he had been selected ih the state team.

Alfred Lambe--Solid defender who left after 1928. Later played for Footscray.

Arch Giles---Former Essendon player. Left in 1926. He registered North's first score in the VFL--a behind against Geelong.

Will Russ---Another of North's early stars. Usually played on the wing or in the center. Left the club in 1928 to return to his old VFA club Footscray.

Fred Metcalfe---North's centre-half-forward for their first three seasons in the VFL. Almost as big as Lewis. Later played for Seville. He died in 1975 and missed seeing North win their first flag.

Harry Clapson---North went to a lot of trouble to get him from Norwood SA but he played only seven games before leaving after one season. Later played for Canberra.

Other leading players of 1925 not shown in the photo were: Leo Dwyer (played seven seasons),Charles Healey (six seasons), Harry Johnston (three seasons plus VFA), Clarrie Nolan(four seasons) and Joe Woods (two seasons).

1904 game between NM and the Dogs with great ground shots and action shots from the Punch of 11 August 1904

Also the Punch of 29 September 1904 shows the final between the Dogs and NM

These are gems. A couple of North's early stars in Noonan and Londerigan are shown. North happened to win both these matches. In the first match only three goals were scored, North winning 2.6 to 1.2 and well on their way to the premiership. Two of Footscray's stars, Marmo and Harris are shown too.
The final against Footscray was the last match played as Richmond declined to play in the Grand Final that year. North won 6.13 to 5.2.

1913 game between Brunswick and NM from the Punch of 4 September 1913

North won this one too. But they lost the Final to Footscray the following week in one of the most exciting VFA Finals ever.
It's a pity we can't tell the teams apart. They both wore stripes that year. North may be wearing the black knickers as the team that finished higher on the table.

Interested in the reason why any club would decline to play a Grand final
