Agreed. The last 4-5 have been really good. Mindy Kaling (who plays Kelly) wrote that episode and she always does a great job.

Thought the last episode, "Test the Store", was 50/50. And I think there's a clear distinction as to what works and what doesn't.

When there's a real storyline that is focused, the payoff can be really good. (Dwight trying to impress his new boss as the story, Jim's presentation as the payoff. Fantastic)

Where the show falls down, is when the premise is some whacky story that lacks direction, and has no lasting consequences. (A kid randomly attacks two adults). Instead of focusing on a believable storyline, the show devolves into "let's get in as many jokes/gags as we can".

It's occasionally funny (like Creed smacking Meridith) but ultimately empty as it serves no character and changes nothing. The show would be much better off putting more focus on fewer characters and building stories around that. The jokes and gags will be there because the writers are talented enough. Too often, it just lacks that direction.

The kid sucker punching Andy wasnt that unbelievable, I remember the times Michael used to do something stupid and he'd spend the episode trying to cover it up

Why were the kids having a go at Pam in the first place?

And my point was that that story goes nowhere. It leads to a lot of people I don't want to see sitting in a conference room taking, and mostly missing, shots at LOL moments. We don't learn anything about any of the characters. It doesn't further any storylines or have any effects. It's a wasted opportunity.

EDIT: They could've taken that 10 minutes and sizzled the Daryl and Val thing a little bit more. Or began a multiple episode arc that would have a bit more meat than the hit or miss gags we get week in week out. Or given us more Jim + new girl awkardness.

Great episode, not just laughs but a real story line. Loved the Dwight/Jim relationship in this one. Also the Kevin bits were funny but probably went too far. Creed cold opening was funny when they all looked at him.

Was almost glad when it looked like erin was leaving, have never liked her.

Please never have another episode with Catherine Tate or Spader again.

Tate's role is so non-believable and ridiculous, coupled with her god awful accent it just makes me want to throw something at the screen. And Spader's character in this episode... why was he even there

    Spot on.

    Three things:
1/ Catherine Tate go away. Annoyingly this probably won't happen considering she's already been bumped ahead of the supporting cast in the credits.

2/ Where are the normal characters? Every new character introduced is weirder than the next. Erin, Gabe, Robert, Nellie. Where's the David Wallace, Season 2 Jan, Charles or even Karen?

3/ Erin and Andy are probably my favourite characters still on the show (RIP Michael) but do not give two shits at all about them together. Erin pining for Andy the past two seasons has been weird considering she was the one who dumped Andy or did the writers forget about that.

Also the green screen last night was pretty funny in how bad it was.

Despite all of this, I'm still watching because the show is still reasonably enjoyable.

Yeah that green screen was atrocious wasn't it.

I'm happy for Andy and Erin to end up together, but like you said, it's like she's forgotten that she dumped him. Despite my misgivings, Andy has been pretty decent as the new boss and they should really just stick to that core storyline. The Florida trip was ok, but its over now, lets get back to Scranton.

Any chance of the Scranton Strangler escaping from jail and killing off Catherine Tate? :D

I'm angry that they replaced Andy with that british twat as boss! How annoying is she...even when she isn't speaking...hopefully Dwight hatches a plan to get rid of her ASAP.

Andy and Erin...yay, I'm actually a little invested in their story. But I like the Nard Dog and I think he was doing a pretty good job as manager...

There's annoying ala David Brent/Michael Scott, Dwight/Gareth and then there's that dross played by Tate.

pretty funny the 'new' boss, good storyline. Bribery is always the key!!!

Wont last long and can see why spader's character wont last, not a good boss at all!

The pom bitch is well just a clone of Brent but in female format. God i hate her and want her to go.

In reality if anyone walked into an office, decided they were boss and started doing performance reviews while giving out raises..would be escorted from the building by security or the cops.

She just isn't funny, not even remotely close.

And erins stupidity is now annoying. Andy did mention to her that she broke his heart first and she replies with something along the line of "yeah but you broke my heart more recently" or something stupid like that.

In reality there wouldnt be anything remotely like this and Michael would have been fired in the first episode, I can understand why you dont like her though and Erin is a bit weird but I still feel for me that the show has recovered after losing Michael

Powered through all 8 seasons over the past few weeks, love the show. Although the disadvantage of flying through it is that it's all mushed together. Next ep out tomorrow!

Andy you're the worst, that was a seriously dickish move.

Nobody cares about your ex-boyfriend, Nellie you're also still the worst.

Creed was hilarious as always and I believe that was the second mention of Michael all season. The tag was pretty funny as well.

Yeah I couldn't see how we were supposed to 'root' for Andy and Erin there. Just stupid on the writers part more than anything.

Creed was ****ing awesome, and that saved what was a meh episode for me.

    Show's just about dead...

No Dwight, no Toby (who in r/l is a big part of the off-screen elements) and potentially more cast to leave.

Now they may go a complete new cast for the show.

Man, that sucks. Dwight has carried this season. As much as I love his character, I really have doubts about his spin-off. Toby is a character most can take or leave, although you're right about his off-screen work.

The show has gotten a lot better as the season has gone on, but it's still a long way off its best (pretty obvious). A new cast could work, maybe a merger with another branch, but they've already done that before. I still think it can work, but they really need to sit down and work out a clear direction and map out the entire season because they don't seem to do that anymore.
