Excuse my ignorance (don't know much about the VFL system), but the commentators mentioned that a number of our best players had left at the end of last year when we changed from the Bullants to the Blues.

Apart from the name change (and hopefully jumper colour to match), why would being aligned to the Blues change the situation for our experienced VFL players? (I think they mentioned Arrowsmith, Cachia and another one)

Weren't the two teams aligned last year? What has changed this year?

As I understand it Arrowsmith & Iacobucci have gone to play for Strathmore. I wouldn't mind betting the 'coin' at Strathmore is better than what was on offer to them from the Northern Blues.

Cachia was delisted from the Blues and moved onto playing Rugby.

The situation for other players was just that they simply moved on.
The teams are still aligned.

Cachia only trained with the Brumbies because his uncle works for them, wanted to show what he had while no AFL clulbs were training. He's now playing in the SANFL with Norwood.

Maybe, but you really should be looking at the ball when you're endeavouring to punch.
I've seen Watson do it quite on more than just the one occasion, where he turns his face away at point of contact.
Something that may not be missed by the coaches, one would think.
Harks, from what you've seen of him, do you think there's a chance they could turn him into a forward?

No joke, I saw plenty of second and third efforts. Was given a few shocking handballs and had to fight for the ball and did well in my eyes, especially in the first quarter.

You are very kind to Watson. His lack of intensity is appalling. Goes to ground at every opportunity, which unfortunately is the sign of a mentally weak footballer.

Double injury blow for Carlton in Blues' loss
Mature-age player Sam Rowe from the SANFL looms as a possible inclusion for Thursday night's season-opener against Richmond at the MCG.

Hyde said Rowe could make his debut after being instructed by the Carlton hierarchy to take him off the field at three-quarter-time.

Simon White was also another Blue on limited-game time in case he was called on for the Richmond clash.

''They couldn't come back on the ground after three-quarter-time because they were in contention for next week and they were on limited preparation time,'' Hyde said.

Hyde said Rowe had impressed during pre-season training and would add a new dimension to the team's forward line, although yesterday he played in defence.

''He played quite well and it gives Carlton another tall bloke to look at it,'' he said.

''I think he's 25 or so, so he's mature age and he played a fair bit of the day down back and did a really good job in that sort of learning situation.''

Rowe playing on Miller could make for a nightmare debut.

The Bullants didn't pay as much as N.F.L and E.D.F.L sides, but your misguided if you think "coin" was the reason they left. 1) These guys have full time jobs and its not easy for them to commute to Carlton and Preston for training while working a 38 hour week. 2) Their AFL prospects are all but gone. 3) The club president said to them that winning the premiership isn't the clubs main goal any more.

So you agree the coin at Strathmore would be better than that at the Bullants/Northern Blues?

That was all I was saying, I wasn't implying anything else.

FWIW, I think both Iaccobucci & Arrowsmith's AFL prospects were gone before last season.

Update from Northern Blues facebook page:

Quarter time here at Visy Park. Competitive showing early on by the Northern Blues, though Williamstown were able to gain the advantage by 10 points heading into the first change. The only goal of the term for the Blues coming from a left foot snap by Co-Captain Andre Gianfagna to the Legends Stand end of the ground.

Northern Blues 1.4 (10)

WIlliamstown 3.2 (20)

Best players: Dale, Lambert, Duigan, McLean and Bransgrove

Major ball winners for the first quarter: Watson 8 disposals, Duigan 7, McLean 6 and Dale with 5. Michael Jamison has had 3 kicks all of which have been effective

I think Dale will be the player elevated for Luke Mitchell.
Brett Ratten mentioned he has a rookie in mind, but he's not quite ready to elevate just yet.

That's because we have a place on our rookie list to elevate someone in the absence of Luke Mitchell and while we think we have found someone he's not quite ready to elevate yet.
