The Sweet FA Championship

Presented by the Stat My B*tch Up Crew

There are many ways to distinguish the greatest teams of all. Games won, games lost, premierships, wooden spoons. All of them serve as valid points to pose one's superiority over another. But what if there was a better way to break it down? That's where SMBU comes in. We've implemented a concept perhaps seen before, but never trialled nor tested in this league. We've dubbed it the Sweet FA Championship.

Why? Because it's a system to determine the champion team over each of the league's 383 weeks to date. The championship is awarded to the largest winner in the first ever round (to establish it) and defending against their opponent the next round. If their opponent wins, they win the championship. If they fail to do so, the championship is retained. This continues every round, the championship defended every week.

Applying this to the league: the inaugural holders of the Sweet FA Championship were the Seventh Wonders, with their 56-point victory the highest of the round. They took the championship to round two, where they lost to Team Pump. The Pump went on a winning streak, not losing in round three, four or five – thus retaining their championship – until Team Kournikova defeated them in round six and took it from their grasp.

Too easy.

Applied over all 1627 games in the league's history, the results are as follows:

Rich (BB code):
West Coast Wonders 26 Southern Sharks 3
Mount Buller Demons 21 Junkyard Dogs 3
Geelong Gumbies 19 Blues Brothers 2
Fighting Furies 18 Hurricanes 2
Baghdad Bombers 15 Gold City Royals 2
East Side Hawks 13 West Coast Magic 2
Roys FFC 13 BigFooty Dragons 2
Dragons FFC 8 Dragons 1
Titans 8 Fremantle Dockers 1
Alberton Swamprats 5 Darkness Eternal 1
Razors 5 Dingoes 1
Las Vegas Bears 4 Koalas 0
All Stars 3 Team Timmy 0
The Mod Squad 3
Wonders first, Demons second. Couldn't script it better, hey? *abuses nearest West Coast member*

But having spent the most time in the league, there's little surprise in the rivals placing in the top two. The Gumbies charged to third thanks to their consistency over the past seven seasons, pinching the championship 11 times in that period, and the Furies with 18 reigns follow close behind. It's tight up top, and considering how often the championship can change hands, don't expect those positions to stay the same for too long.

Most weeks with championship
Rich (BB code):
West Coast Wonders 60 Blues Brothers 5
Fighting Furies 52 Southern Sharks 4
Geelong Gumbies 44 Junkyard Dogs 4
Mount Buller Demons 43 Hurricanes 4
East Side Hawks 33 Gold City Royals 3
Baghdad Bombers 32 West Coast Magic 2
Roys FFC 23 BigFooty Dragons 2
Dragons FFC 19 Dragons 1
Titans 15 Fremantle Dockers 1
Alberton Swamprats 9 Darkness Eternal 1
Razors 8 Dingoes 1
Las Vegas Bears 6 Koalas 0
All Stars 6 Team Timmy 0
The Mod Squad 5
Unsurprisingly, the Wonders come out on top again, but most interesting is the leap of the Furies, who compared to the Wonders have eight less weeks from eight less reigns. Their average of 2.89 weeks per reign is the best of all teams and suggests that when they're on top, they don't mind staying there. Also showing similar traits were the Hawks.

Longest reign
Rich (BB code):
Fighting Furies 9 (S05R23-S06R4)
Fighting Furies 7 (S04R17-S04R23)
Geelong Gumbies 7 (S05R5-S05R11)
West Coast Wonders 7 (S13R2-S13R8)
Mount Buller Demons 6 (S03R16-S03R21)
East Side Hawks 6 (S08R2-S08R7)
Geelong Gumbies 6 (S12R9-S12R14)
Baghdad Bombers 6 (S14R16-S15R1)
Mount Buller Demons 5 (S07R3-S07R7)
West Coast Wonders 5 (S09R3-S09R7)
East Side Hawks 5 (S09R8-S09R12)
East Side Hawks 5 (S10R13-S10R17)
West Coast Wonders 5 (S10R5-S10R9)
Roys FFC 5 (S11R20-S11R24)
East Side Hawks 5 (S12R4-S12R8)
Dragons FFC 5 (S17R11-S17R15)
Further backing the Furies' ability to get on a roll were their two best reigns in Season 3 and Season 4. Nine weeks seems short but is unmatched in the many years of this competition and it will take something extra special to come close. The Dragons recorded their first five-week reign in Season 17, but ultimately fell short. Which is a decent segue...

So...who's the current champion?

Pinching said championship from the Dragons in round 16 last season were the pesky Roys, winning a shootout by 20 points. The 'Rillas didn't go far, falling to the Gumbies the next round. The men in clay won the next week, preventing the Furies from holding the championship throughout the finals series, and entered an elimination final against the Wonders. And the Wonders, from sixth...well, the rest is history.

So, thanks to their finals run, the West Coast Wonders are the current Sweet FA Champions on a four-week streak. *hatefully piffs snow cone at monitor*

Who's going to pinch the title from them? We'll wait and see.

This is seriously good.

Just imagine though. One clerical error and the whole thing is blown.

And we all know that if there is an error, nobody except for Eth is capable of finding it :D
Damn it okey, be quiet, nobody's meant to consider the possibility of me manipulating these things...

...I mean, as you were.

Roys.....................Middle of the road..........Just where we like it.
Sandwiched in between others, feeling the pressure on both ends.

I like it Eth, and so easy to update each week. Round one means only 2 teams have the opportunity to be champions, the Wonders, or whoever their opponent may be. Something easily traced. Nice work.

Actually would be an idea to do it for players as well Eth? Not sure how it would work though, as we change opponents throughout the game.

Did we really need another thread pointing out how poor the Roys are? It's called bullying.
