I've been thoroughly enjoying the Giro - at least I was until the UCI penalised Simon Clarke and Richie Porte for Clarke's selfless act in helping out his mate (gave him his wheel) when Richie punctured less that 5K from the end of a stage. Apparently it's illegal to help someone from another team. Of course, at the same time, we have a convicted drug cheat (Contador) leading the race and the entire Astana squad under a massive drugs cloud - and that is perfectly OK. Go figure!

I suppose they are trying to ensure that teams don't get some sort of unfair advantage through collaboration but, if that is the case, what about teams working with each other in breaks, dragging back breaks, providing 'drag' from their cars in bringing riders back to the peleton etc? In any case, in any organisational setting, rules must be applied sensibly and with regard to context.
