Themed Cricket XI's

I'll have a go at this. I will do best left sided cricketers, I will build it on the best I have seen, I was born in 1990. So anyone from 2002 to now will be my base. If it has been done, I am sorry.

1.Matthew Hayden
2.Graeme Smith
3.Brian Lara
4.Kumar Sangakkara
5.Michael Hussey
6.Sanath Jayasuriya
7.Sourav Ganguly
8.Adam Gilchrist
9.Mitchell Johnson
10.Chaminda Vass
11.Zaheer Khan

12th man Daniel Vettori

Explanations, was struggling to pick an opener with the Dos, but went Smith instead. Leadership.
Could not think of an allrounder better than Jayasuriya. Could not fit him in at the top of the order, for obvious reasons.
Zaheer Khan, could not think of another bowler. Bowled well when it was swinging around, can bat a bit.
Not one decent spinner has sprung to mind. Brad Hogg?

I actually had Vettori in over Jayasuriya as a spinner but the all round option was more enticing.

Love this thread.

13.LRPL Taylor NZ 21.37
14.ADR Campbell ZIM 20.18
15.RR Sarwan WI 20.13

Tendulkar, Amla and Chanderpaul all have 19% lbws but I decided to keep a top 7 with all over 20%

Wow 26% almost 27 is an amazingly bad number considering the amount of tests played to the others.

My best XI I have seen.

1. Matthew Hayden.
2. Graeme Smith.
3. Ricky Ponting.
4. Brain Lara.
5. Michael Hussey.
6. Jacques Kallis.
7. Adam Gilchrist.
8. Shaun Pollock.
9. Shane Warne.
10. Dale Steyn
11. Glenn McGrath

12th man Sangakkara. Never opened. Batted middle order, find me somebody to take out.

So much harder than I thought.

Would maybe swap Sangakkara and Smith.

I would bump Lara up as a makeshift opener (IIRC he played there a few times in ODIs and Tests and did alright) and ditch Hayden/Hussey for Tendulkar/Sangakkara. The latter two are miles better bats than the former.

The Racist XI
D. Haynes
J. Root
D. Jones
G. Ritchie
D. Lehmann (c)
R. Latif (+)
S. Tanvir
H. Singh
R. Hogg
G. Lawson
B. Patterson
One very notable omission

D. Bradman - racist as they come, didn't even like sitting at the same table as the Indian or West Indies team. Religious bigot as hated the Catholics and Irish.

Test players with a brother who is recognised as a better cricketer
Still laughing over D. Patto. The bloke couldn't even get a game for Victoria at that time!

In light of our recent Ashes defeat

Bump

One Day Speclialists
(players who were only known in the shorter form. High ODI/Test Ratio required. Gayle/Gibbs etc not considered cause they still played alot of tests)
(doing from memory, so really only going back from the late 90's with this one)

1. Suresh Raina (wk)
2. Upul Tharanga
3. Eoin Morgan
4. Yurajv Singh
5. Jonty Rhodes
6. Andrew Symonds
7. Michael Bevan
8. Shahid Afridi
9. Brad Hogg
10. Nathan Bracken
11. Lasith Malinga

Bit tough on Afridi. Yeah, he only played 27 tests, but that was more because of politics than form. He averaged 36 with the bat and 35 with the ball. He made test centuries as an opener.

Simon O'Donnell?
Wasn't thinking back that far, but good call he should be in there

Yeh Afridi was a tough one, but he is certainly more known for his ODI performances

How about Test Match specialists though
The BBC XI (Test Match Specials)
(really only including players who played when ODI cricket was big)

1. Justin Langer
2. Allistair Cook
3. Sunil Gavaskar
4. VVS Laxman
5. Shiv Chanderpaul
6. Simon Katich
7. Matt Prior (wk)
8. Matthew Hoggard
9. Jason Gillespie
10. Merve Hughes
11. Rananga Herath

I would think him being Pakistan test captain for a period should preclude him from the list. Having said that, if you'd left him out, more people would have been saying 'where's Afridi????' lol

Graeme Thrope perhaps ahead of Simon Katich?

The Early Risers XI (Young debutants)

1. Greame Pollock (19)
2. Sachin Tendulkar (16)
3. Javed Miandad (19)
4. Adam Parore (wk) (19)
5. Garfield Sobers (17)
6. Aravinda De Silva (19)
7. Doug Walters (19)
8. Kapil Dev (19)
9. Imran Khan (18)
10. Anil Kumble (19)
11. Waqar Younis (17)

Pakistan sure do like debuting young players. Also Parore stands out pretty badly in that lineup, but not a lot of keepers debut young. Same goes for opening bats
