AFL National Draft, Round 3, Pick No. 41

TODD BANFIELD - Medium midfielder
Date of birth: 28 June 1990
Height: 181.9cm
Weight: 74.8kg
Club: Swan Districts (WA)

Incredibly quick and aggressive medium-sized midfielder who uses his turn of pace to break games open (2.87sec for 20m). Has the ability to win ball at contested situations and displays neat skills by foot.

Draft Profile

Banfield is a very quick midfielder from Swan Districts who has solid skills on both sides of his body. He is very hard at the contest and some would say an old fashioned footballer. He has clean hands and is really capable at breaking the lines with his brilliant pace. He provided very good defensive pressure for Swan Districts this year, utilising his pace effectively.

Draft Profile

No. 41 TODD BANFIELD: (Swan Districts, WAFL) 18, 182cm (5'11"), 75kg (165): has played some senior WAFL football and was one of the best on ground in the WAFL Grand Final. A speedy midfielder who attacks the ball well.

2008 WAFL Colts Team of the year – Wing
2008 Jack Clarke Medal - =9th (25 votes, 12 games)

2008 WAFL form

Not really on the recruiting radar, Banfield started off the year in Swan Districts colts, missed out on state selection, but consistently applied himself and showed good enough form in the colts throughout the 1st half of the season to work his way into the league side by the 2nd half of the season. He debuted impressively with a 13 disposals, 4 marks and 2.1 game and kept his spot for the rest of the season, including finals.

His finals series for the Swans was very good for a skinny 18 year old, and helped get his name out there to recruiters. While he wasn’t a prolific ball winner with tallies of (15 disposals, 9 disposals and 13 disposals), he still managed to have a very good impact with them, particularly hurting the opposition pushing I50 at pace and hitting forwards short on the chest, along with the defensive pressure, tackling and chasing efforts he provided.

Disposal/Decision making – Kicking 7.5/10, Handballing 7/10

- Right footed, but dual sided (uses left frequently)

- Good control and weighting over the short range, but his kicking lacks penetration

- Probably about a 45-50m kick max on his right
- Rarely high risk, but hits his targets and makes relatively few mistakes

- Medium hurt factor.

- Handballing is decent without being great

- Vision is good

- Occassionally lacks power

- Can get the ball moving out of congestion well

- Gets his hands free OK

- Not routinely consistent with hitting targets.

Hands – 8.5/10

- Loose ball pick-ups at pace are his bread and butter - as clean as you'll see (his trademark)

- Found at WAFL level he was prone to fumbling bouncing balls/tending to have hard hands at times

Work-ethic – Defensive 9/10, Attacking 9/10

- One thing Banfield will certainly give you for certain is 100% effort going both ways.

- Always chases defensively and runs hard as an outside option no matter what the situation (i.e. was battling on very manfully even though the result was obvious in the last ½ /¼ of the GF).
- Tackling endeavours are very good despite being so skinny, although he can get pushed off at times by men - upper body strength needs to improve quite significantly.

- Very good wet weather footballer

Footy nous/Ball-winning ability – Footy Nous 7/10, Ball winning ability 7.5/10

- He isn’t naturally a big ball winner as he doesn’t have a particularly large engine

- Although he tries hard doesn’t have the strength/nous to be a consistent clearance winner at stoppages

Goal Kicking Ability – 6.5/10

- Average ability to kick goals through the midfield/flanks (pushes forward effectively)

- Not consistent with his radar in front of goal.

Athleticism – 8/10

- Very quick off the mark (sub 2.9s 20m) and uses it well during games – carries the ball well, breaks lines and provides good drive from stoppages.

- Lateral movement is decent, though I find he’s more of a straight line/direct player.

- Hard runner both ways, but lacks the tank to carry out his game-style for sustained periods - currently just a burst player (beep test 12.1)

- Lacks overall strength, but no issues with balance

Aerial ability – 5.5/10

- OH ability doesn't stand out

- Doesn't put himself into many situations where he is contesting the ball above his chest

- Reach disadvantage and not a particularly big leap

Versatility – 6.5/10

- Can play most roles through the midfield – a running linkman winger role would be his best ATM.

- Not genuine first dibs inside mid potential IMO - although he’s hard at the ball and man he doesn’t read the stoppages at an above average level and ball a linking role suits him better.

- I think run-with roles will suit him very well down the track, if he can develop a bigger engine as he has the pace and defensive capacity to stick to and keep up with most.
- Possibly HBF as a quick rebounding defender (his defensive game is good enough, but his overhead ability will need to improve)

AFL Ready?

- Senior form was very solid for a skinny 18 year old, but will need at least a couple more pre-seasons in the gym and on the track

- May be an outside chance to come in for a few games next season, with some good state league form behind him

Scope for improvement

- Getting his engine up to scratch so he can have more sustained impact on games, rather than being a burst player.

- Getting bigger so he has more of a physical impact with his contested/defensive game against men (the intent is there) - probably 5-8kg off an appropriate AFL playing weight for him

Overall Assessment

While Banfield has electric pace, he's very much an old fashioned footballer (run's in straight lines, moves the ball forward, runs hard both ways, hits his short targets etc.). The lack of penetration in his footskills is a bit of worry, with it becoming an important commodity (particularly for outside players) to carry the ball 50m accurrately/sharply by foot these days and although his pace pace makes up for it somewhat, it could be the limiting factor. A chance for a mid to late pick - at worst he'll be rookied.

Pick 59 - Todd Banfield, 180? cm, Swan Districts

Was a real find for the Swans league team after being elevated from colts (u18) in the latter part of the year. Attacks the ball hard, has genuine pace and is clean below the knees at pace. Delivery of the ball to the forwards, at pace, is also very good. I think the bloodnut will add some real zip to the midfield and balance it out very well.

85 – Fremantle - Todd Banfield – Fremantle don’t really have much of a choice but to continue picking once all other teams have pulled up stumps. Have shown a lot of interest in the quick redhead. Speedy midfielder who has a very penetrating boot. Good skills either side of the body. Received a SS invite, performed well in the finals series for the league side, so well in fact he held his spot all the way up until the GF.

# 66 Port Power – Todd Banfield ( Swan Districts / 181 / 78)

Thought about Ben Bucovaz here but Todd Banfield probably offers more upside. Lightning quick kid that has a terrific engine and will run all day. Skills very good and in the few tapes I have seen seems to have a red hot go. Will be well suited to AAMI where he can really use his pace to advantage. Power fans will certainly notice him – he’s a bloodnut and I don’t think you have ever had a quality bloodnut have you?

Todd Banfield
His skills let him down, but his toughness at the ball and the man are top rate. In a saints team that lacks a lot of genuine pace, Banfield could answer their prayers.

Pick 45 Collingwood Todd Banfield
Seemed to enjoy playing in the midfield for the Swans at WAFL level. He has plenty of pace and is a very good kick. Also good below the knees, is almost like a Blease styled player, I actually rate this kid rather highly and will be a welcome addition to the midfield of Collingwood.

Banfield has played senior football for Swan Districts and his most recent game was the 2008 WAFL grand final against Rich and Subiaco.“I talked a couple of times with (Lions recruiter) Graeme Hadley after the state screening testing but I wasn’t sure whether I’d get drafted,” Banfield said.
“The biggest thing for me is just getting over to Brisbane and getting the respect of the other players to start with.
“I want to put in the hard yards and do everything I can to make sure I make a career out of this.”

Was named in the Colts Team of the Year:

The 200 Club WAFL Colts Team of the Year:
BACKS LINE: Stephen Hill (WP) Blake Warner VC (PTH) Matthew Oliveri (EF)
HALF BACKS: Clancee Pearce Cap (SD) Simon Parry (SD) Jarrad Blight (SD)
CENTRE: Michael Mather (PTH) Mark Hutchings (EP) Todd Banfield (SD)
HALF FORWARDS: Alroy Gilligan (CL) Dylan Ross (CL) Neville Jetta (SD)
FORWARDS: Clinton Bradshaw (SUB) Lance Daly (SD) John Bennell (Peel)
RUCK: Rhys Peedle (PTH) Warren Benjamin (CL) Michael Walters (SD)
INTERCHANGE: Jason Brennan (PTH), Rohan Bewick (WP), Joel Palumbo (SF), Jordan Eastwell (EP)

And here is how chrsco described him:

Playing style is kamikaze. Just relentless at the ball. Quick and slippery but uses the ball pretty well when under pressure. Has certainly stood up under the finals pressure the last 2 weeks. As I've said elsewhere, was one of the most important players in our colts team that if the team needed a lift he would often provide the lift and be looked to to provide the spark.

No relation to Drew AFAIK. Todd's from Bunbury, I believe.

The number 18 guernsey vacated by the Club’s trading of Anthony Corrie has been allocated to West Australian recruit Todd Banfield.

Banfield chose the number which has previously been worn by the likes of Fitzroy Team of the Century member Frank Curcio (249 games) and Fitzroy’s John Blakey (131 games).

Lions Player Welfare Manager Craig Lambert also wore the number 18 in close to 100 matches with the Club.

With Hoopers latest antics, Banfields stock may be on the rise should we need an injection of pace into the team.

Big preseason needed to stake a claim.

Banfield's debut to forget
23rd July 2008, 14:00 WST

Last Saturday’s clash against East Fremantle turned into a debut to forget in some respects for Swan Districts teenager Todd Banfield. Recruited from Upper Swan, Banfield was promoted to the senior side after playing just one game in the Swans’ reserve team in a rise through the ranks that suggested he was capable of big things.
That suggestion may still ring true, but the big things will have to wait for several weeks after the 18-year-old was suspended for making forceful front-on contact to Chris Basile.
In 12 colts games this year Banfield has averaged an impressive 20 possessions and impressed on his league debut with 13 touches and two goals. Unfortunately, he is not eligible to return to any level of football until Round 21.
The two-match suspension added salt to the Swan Districts wound on a dark day for the club that saw it record a third loss in four games.

“Todd has attracted some interest from clubs and our indications are he will get drafted and maybe earlier than some might expect. He’s got blistering pace, he’s hard at the footy and he’s just a real honest player. Probably not the world’s greatest skills but can still damaging with the footy. Played from round 14 onwards in the seniors and played in our grand final side and was one of our best players.” – Swan Districts football manager Matt Peach

Swans coach Brian Dawson has coached a lot of young players this season but he has been particularly impressed with how Pearce has come into the side late in the year.

"Clancee and Todd Banfield are the babies of the team at the moment as Nick and Chris have played all year, Wolfy has been in the team and Joshy Pullman has played a fair few games," Dawson said.

"Banners and Clancee might be the babies but they are standing up really well and they have a great appetite for the contest and are excited to be out there."

Does anyone else think that Banfield could be a smokey for an early call up this season.

From reports he played well in the scratch match before breaking his hand and again in the game against Mt Gravatt.

We are very limited for guys with pace with only really Harding, Hooper, Banfield and King on the list who would be classifed as fast.

As an over-age draft pick the kid does have some senior experience in the WAFL last year, which should make the transition easier.

Adrian Fletcher

He broke a bone in his hand in the off-season but is back in full swing now. Has worked on his decision making and disposal and is a dynamo who has great speed and defensive pressure.

AFLQ

First year draftee Todd Banfield was dynamic at half-back and provided great run and drive and was his side's most consistently good player over four quarters.
