Rockliff: Nothing to worry about

TOM ROCKLIFF joined the Brisbane Lions rehab group on Wednesday, but said it was nothing to worry about.

The Lions skipper niggled his hamstring on Monday and opted to spend more time signing autographs than running laps at a fan day organised by the club as part of its Sunshine Coast pre-season camp.

"I'm better off resting it today and doing the main session on Friday," Rockliff said.

It's part of a more conservative approach the Lions are taking this pre-season.

Great to see. Certainly not going to be one of those guys who didn't get the best out of himself that's for sure. True leaders know when they need help or extra resources and are always willing to learn. Great to hear

Bouris is obviously a very successful businessman and is incredibly well connected, particularly in Sydney circles. He's part of that Packer, Gyngell, Politis etc group. He's been a long term board member of a rugby league club and I believe has done leadership mentoring in that space?

Rocky inspires Blacky’s students

Lions skipper Tom Rockliff has shared some words of inspiration with youngsters who could one-day follow in his footsteps.

He was recently paid a visit by members of the Simon Black Australian Rules Academy, a combined educational and AFL training program designed for high school leavers who haven’t been snapped up by a professional AFL team, but want to continue training at an elite level whilst gaining certifications with pathways onto university.

Rocky relived what it was like to be overlooked by all 16 teams in the first two rounds of the 2008 National Draft. With one remaining spot on our senior list, the Lions eventually earmarked the country Victorian and drafted him with our first selection (Pick No.5 overall) in the Pre-Season Draft later that year. He went on to win Rookie of the Year in 2010.

Rocky reinforced to the group the possibilities when you stay focussed and committed.

To help his students on this journey, Blacky has appointed former Lions Brent Moloney and Nathan Clarke, as well as former premiership player Clinton Young, to coaching roles at the various branches of the academy.

Wow. His ability to rack up 40+ possessions is incredible. He has a phenomenal work rate.

Wow. His ability to rack up 40+ possessions is incredible. He has a phenomenal work rate.
Also ranked 6th all time in tackles per game average with 5.71 per game. Only blokes ahead of him:

Andrew Swallow 6.5;
Matthew Priddis 6.49
Jack " remember him" Redden 6.25;
Ben Howlett; 6.22
Tom Liberatore; 5.87

Also all time 11th in hand balls per game @ 12.82 per game and 23rd all time in contested possessions per game at 10.5.

Top 5 all time for contested possessions per game are all current players:

Josh Kennedy 14.63
Nat Fyfe 13.5
Matt Priddis 12.97
Dangerfield 12.38
Tom Liberatore 12.35

Next highest in order are:
Ratten, West, Judd, Ablett Jnr, Koutoufides, Black ranging from 12.16 to 11.26 contested possessions per game.

I'd say our skippers abilities cannot be and should not be questioned. If he was in a winning side over the past 5 years he'd be a God.

Oh by the way, 13 the all time for uncontested possessions at 15.56 per game. Gaff is the highest all time with 17.19 per game, other current players ahead of Rocky- Birchall, Sam Gibson, Brent Stanton, Dane Swan 16.36, jack McRae, Toby Green, Sam Mitchell, Brandon Ellis, Leigh Montagna and Michael Hibberd.

Rocky ranked 39 in the "players top 50":

39. Tom Rockliff
Brisbane Lions
Midfielder
Last year's ranking: 19
Official AFL Player Rating: 61
Debut: 2009
Games: 117
AFL Fantasy value: $579,000

After a stellar 2014, Rockliff took over the captaincy but injury hampered his output in the first half of the year. He suffered broken ribs in the opening round against Collingwood and then a repeat of the injury in round nine against St Kilda. Once fully fit, the prolific ball-winner worked his way into form, averaging 35 disposals over the final six rounds. Rockliff fell 20 spots on the list of AFL players but if he manages to stay on the park, the 26-year-old is sure to be higher on the list in 2017.

Rockliff At Home Up Front

Tom Rockliff is set to return to his roots as a forward in a plan to bolster the Lions’ attack.

Brisbane’s midfield led ably by Rockliff and Dayne Beams, now includes draftees Ben Keays and Rhys Mathieson (who are highly promising ball-winners) and new recruits Tom Bell and Ryan Bastinac, who add depth and experience to the side.

With Daniel Rich poised to spend more time through the middle and with the AFL’s cap on rotations, Coach Justin Leppitsch has the option of stationing Rockliff and other noted goal kicker Beams permanently forward for periods of games.
