A bully and a toady. Quite common but why vote such an animal in ?

Pess it was a choice between a God bothering megalomaniac and a ginger, whining, ambulance chasing, fraud enabler.

As a wise man once said "don't vote, all you do is encourage the bxstards"

You are too kind to Tone here, and too tough on Gillard.

I would be far harsher on her if truth was an absolute defence to libel. Tone has been rather poor (even if he at least showed some common sense re mining / carbon taxes), at least he was a decent minister. Gillard's entire parliamentary career has been one of failure. Medicare Gold anyone?

Gillard vs Gough for worst post war PM. Abbott would have to do something extraordinarily stupid in terms of tax /spending to get anywhere near them.

Gough was flawed, but not nearly as much as is painted. He has left terrific lasting legacies in health. legal, art and social areas. He brought us into the modern world. He will be better remembered than most who have followed him.
Gillard was fine. Rupert's media beat ups about her lack of competence have been greatly exaggerated.

Unmitigated failure.

Rupert held to her account. We should all be grateful for that.

Gough increased spending by over 40% in a year. Art? What, one painting.

I like Jackson Pollock, best seen on acid. Blue Poles was also bought for $1.3 million and is now valued at anywhere between $20 - $100 million according to a quick Google search. Assuming we take the somewhere in the middle of that, it's not a bad return on investment.

One swallow doesn't make a summer. Gough wasted far more than that.

If you cant / wont sell something does it have any value? Do Australians actually benefit from its ownership? I find that a very hard argument to believe. In any event isn't there a good argument to be had re if the govt does buy art it should be Oz art to stop it leaving the country?

Id take Drysdale over that any day of the weeks thanks.

As health minister in the Howard Government MM intervened in the Tasmanian health system to prop up the North-West General hospital. Not for anything but base, gutter politics. The North-west region had two hospitals which was unsustainable. Two small hospitals could not sustain the need for suitable qualified staff levels & thus patient safety was being compromised. The cost of suitable staffing was way above the efficient operation of such a small hospital. Even the Feds insist on a level of efficiency in Hospital operations.

Abbott & Howard came down & promised to pump Federal money in to keep it open & effectively buy the seat of Bass.

It was nice for the locals who didnt want to go on the long trip to Burnie (30mins away) or Launcestion (1 hr away) so the feds put in the $millions just to embarrass the State government who had made correct fiscal & medico-legal decision.

So don't mention the word decent. He is just another gross political animal.

Any comment?

In the ranking of political thugs & pigs, Abbott is right up their. Say one thing, & do the opposite!

Love Blue Poles. First viewing on mary jane. My pleasure in it hasn't been decreased by 'getting straight'.
lol rup helping out.

Keeping health out of the headlines is a very hard task because the demand for medical services is always so high/growing. He got little grief in that portfolio (compare that to nursing homes under Howard and one or two other areas). By all accounts he was seen as a safe pair of hands. Some people can administer but can't lead / think for themselves. He gives the impression he is one of those people (as opposed to Joe Hockey who gives the appearance of neither). Successive Tasmanian governments have had about as much ability as Freo recruiters in the 90s. Fed intervention hardly the blackest of black marks (ex Franklin Dam).

Remember Gillard and Medicare gold? Now that was a stuff up in the same portfolio. Ask Dry Rot to explain if you cant recall.

Gillard wasn't even in Government? How can Medicare Gold be a stuff-up and a poor show as Minister. Basically Latham was faltering and they wanted a big idea to try and change the story. IIRC Medicare Gold was the idea of giving free medical care to pensioners. It would have been very expensive, but wasn't the goal to free up beds and waiting lists in public hospitals by putting pensioners into the Private system? That doesn't sound very Lathamesque, but it was something like that. The point is, trying to say JG was a bad minister - even though many reports suggest she was a good one - via the means of saying a policy idea linked to her shadow ministry in the middle of an election was not something you agreed to or thought was fully thought through... I mean - c'mon. By those standards there isn't a single good minister in the current Liberal government.

And Tone was considered a good minister. But most of those reports related to the fact that he let the bureaucracy get on with it and spent a lot of time writing articles. Not exactly something I thought you would consider 'good', Meds.

Nah there is no way Peta could have predicted he would make a statement on something like that - how is it predictable?
For regular PMs, everything they said would be talked about beforehand. You're in charge of the country after all. What you say can create waves. Of course, Tony is very different in that he has been gagged from the moment he became Opposition Leader. Scottish Independence is one of the biggest political topics in the UK at the moment. It was predictable it would come up.

Also predictable was that they would copy the make-over tactics they did with Howard, when they got him a hair-cut, brow-trim and thin glasses. The first two worked well, but the glasses they had him wearing recently were ridiculous. Way too big - you can't just make him look like Howard and think you'll get votes. Can you?

TONY Abbott has warned that attacks such as the beheading of American journalist James Foley could happen on Australian soil without constant vigilance, because of the extremist threat posed by Islamic State terrorists.
It could happen in countries like Australia if we relax our vigilance against terrorism and potential terrorism here on our shores.

Blatant fear mongering.

Earlier, Mr Abbott said that some Muslim leaders had “rather foolishly boycotted’’ talks during the week between the government and the community on the proposed new counter-terrorism laws. At least two groups, including the Islamic Council of Victoria, did not attend a meeting with Mr Abbott in Melbourne.

The Prime Minister said there was a spirit of “Team Australia’’ among those who did attend.
Team Australia...
Us versus them.

Whose side are YOU on?

Unfortunately, A very poor answer.
Trying obfuscation to ignore your own point about Abbott being a decent minister. I gave you absolute evidence to the contrary.
Abbott did just what he should not have. A sensible medico-legal & financially responsible NON POLITICAL decision was made. Yet he used Federal money for nothing but crass party political benefit.
He may not be worse than some others over the journey, but that is NOT your point.
Is that the behavior one should expect from a 'responsible' minister of the crown.???
No, because he is a lying, duplicitous, divisive FLOG.
You are disappointing. You could at least acknowledge this as a serious failing.
How do you justify your position, even in your own mind???

It is done so that we will forget the incompetence thus far displayed, as well as the more pressing and relevant issues before us and expend our energy by ramping up intolerance, ignorance and sectarian fear mongering, something we have shown ourselves to be so good at and which can, so effectively, divide us.

" Team Australia " translated - " NON-FASCIST "

Geez , would've thought the performance of the Fuhrer during the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd govt was FAR from " Team Australia ".worthy.
They honestly think 47% of us are stupid.

Operation this, team that.

Onlu a matter of time before the other howard chestnut, the X point plan. Where its sounds like theyre doing somethin but dont want to admit what it is they are proposing in detail
