Top Tasmanian Draft Prospects for 2012

Hi Tazwegian

I know you like up to date information so here it is (for your eyes only!!).

I have it through an extremely reliable source that Siggins has been told by at least 1 AFL club, that if he is available then they will draft him.

While nothing is certain come draft time, it is a very good bet Siggins will be drafted. At what number is irrelevant, but still a good discussion point!!!

Great news. Now we just need a couple of these 50/50 guys to get drafted, and it will have been a good year.

Emma Quayle has Lonergan at 13 and Thurlow at 16 :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Not sure that Thurlow really will go that high, but absolutely stoked that he is linked to Geelong and they rate him that highly. Geelong's recruiting team know their stuff, and it confirms what a few of us have been saying about Thurlow for quite a while now. Couldn't think of a better team for him to end up at either.

Huge win for us getting two players smack in the middle of round 1! So stoked with that result. Been calling Lonergan and Thurlow two of the more exciting Tasmanian prospects for awhile, and their draft position has backed that up. Siggins getting picked up by Adelaide is fantastic as well. Might get another one or two in the rookie draft, but I couldn't be much happier with today's draft to be honest.

Thurlow to the cats is such a massive result. Hopefully he can make his debut early in 2013.

A great result for the Tassie boys.
It seems that AFC might have given up their earlier drafts knowing who they were going to draft anyway. So effectively we can say Siggins was a 1st round draft (AFC gave up 20).

So Tassie had 3 players in the top 20!!

Haha yeah. Another way to put it is that all three Tasmanians were their respective club's first choice selections :thumbsu:

no siggins was pick 62. overlooked 61 times so hardly a first round pick.

Walsh ticks all the boxes as average (not a bad thing) but is not outstanding in any one area and skills wise is probably a fair way off, mind you so was Robinson so you never know. This season McNab from Devonport is a smokey and most likely Brown from Glenorchy and you never know, Standen from Clarence may also get some interest, probably needed to get into midfield more?

Been telling scouts about Standen for two years, some of them have never even heard of him. I've always thought he would be worth a look.

However, the programs in Tassie aren't ideal. The Mariners involvement in the TAC Cup needs to be expanded so the elite kids are exposed to an elite program for more than 6 or 7 games a year. Six TAC Cup games and Five U18 Championship games would be perfect. Club level coaching and the roles the kids are used in at club level are ordinary.

This. 32/71 players drafted this year were out of the TAC Cup, it's the best way to put your name in front of scouts and recruiters and it's also a great system for producing quality AFL players, as evidenced by 8 of the top 10 this year also being from TAC Cup.

Totally agree with putting the Tassie boys in front of of the recruiters on a weekly basis via TAC Cup.

If the AFL have a $1.5 biilion deal over 5 years, surely they could fund the cost of the Mariners being in the TAC Cup.

The 50/50 type players would certainly benefit from the exposure and no doubt the draft returns for Tassie would increase.

The elite ones will get drafted anyway, but being in a good program might make a difference to the fringe players, it might be the difference between someone getting picked at 50 or not at all. Plus the kids who miss out would filter back into the TSL and make it a stronger competition because they've been exposed to a better standard of footy.

Shame that AFL Tas lost Dave Kinsella during the year because he'd done some great work in the state, and Nick Probert being shifted into another role weakens the Mariners off field contingent as well. Unfortunately it's hard to see AFL Tasmania tip more funding in when it seems they have actually cut it back this year.

What load of horse poo. The majority get drafted out of that comp because they are that much better, we have tried the Mariners and the results are the same as now, if not worse.
2002 - 2
2003 - 2 (3 From tassie, however Thurley wa taken from the Devils)
2004 - 3
2005 - 3
2006 - 4
2007 - 1
2008 - 4

The other problem we face is that, out of those drafted, very few actually have an impact. There is a growing trend of players being drafted from the WAFL and SANFL now. The other point is NT and QLD do not have Mariner programs, so why are they getting more drafted?

Tazwegian thanks for the info on Sam & Jack

Pick #62 (Adelaide) - Sam Siggins: Siggins is a tall defender with good skills by hand and foot and elite endurance. At just 18 years of age, he already has a solid frame. He stands at 196cm and weighs 88 kilos, giving him a 2cm height and an 8 kilo weight advantage over fellow Tasmanian, and first round draftee from 2011, Henry Schade at the same age. He reads the play well and is excellent overhead and in one on one situations. Can play forward or back, but looks more likely as a spoiling and contested marking KPD. He is one of the better pure KPDs from this year's crop, and should be drafted within the first two rounds on talent. Siggins had a very strong year in the TSL, playing on more experienced and mature bodies and more than matching them for strength and ability.

Player Comparison: Ben Reid (Collingwood)
Predicted Draft range: 40-80

Level 2 Rookies:

Jack Osborn: A massive unit at 205cm, Osborn reportedly has excellent agility and vertical leap. Cites his strengths as his ability to run well for a big man, and at 22 years old, Osborn already has the physique to be physically competitive at the AFL level. Adelaide are said to be keen to develop him into either a ruckmen or key position defender, which demonstrates his athleticism as there are very few defenders capable of competing endurance wise at his height. Could potentially be a very interesting prospect going forward.

I am happy with his highlights good pick up at 62

Yeah, I think after Plowman, Clurey, and Corr, he was the best of the rest of the KPDs. Doesn't have the burst athleticism of some of those guys, but his massive tank should hold him in good stead. It will be interesting how he develops in comparison to Schade. GoTassie and I suggested that he is probably a little ahead of Schade's development at the same age and Schade was a late first rounder. He seems to have the right attitude to make it at the next level also.

You crows are building a bit of a Tassie contingent now. Good to see :)
