Turkish warplanes have reportedly shot down a Russian military aircraft on the border with Syria.

Russia's Interfax news agency cited the Russian defence ministry as saying that a Su-24 had crashed in northern Syria, and that its two pilots had ejected.

Turkish military officials said Turkish F-16s had shot down the plane after repeatedly warning its pilots that they were violating Turkish airspace.

Video footage showed the plane crashing into mountains in Latakia province.

Russia launched an air campaign to bolster Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government in late September.

I think that the Turks did it more out of spite because the Russians were bombing the Turkmen in that area opposing Syrian government forces.

The fact that the Turks have gone running to NATO so quickly indicates to me that they have done something naughty

Putin will show restraint. Unlike the NATO maniacs trying to protect their jihadist assets.

Just cant see it. Putin now has the world waiting on his next move...something he has been waiting for. I suspect he will act swiftly and quietly...kgb style ;)

Pilots survived?

Jesus. Its this kind of thing that could kick off something big.

Yeah both ejected. Last reports were that there had been no contact with moscow and are currently at an unknown destination.

He should just keep bombarding their assets, IS or whatever their names are. That is his way of fighting them. Hence why this plane down as well as the one in Egypt. Putin has been fighting NATO by bombing IS for almost 2 months now.

If it wasn't obvious before, it should be obvious now whose side Turkey is on. Reports surfacing now that 2 Russian reporters have been injured near the border from shelling. Turkey/the west is attacking Russia who are fighting IS. Why????

NATO is going to hold an emergency meeting at Turkey's request.

http://www.abc.net.au/radionational...ncy-meeting-after-turkey-makes-urgent/6652754

NATO will today hold an emergency meeting in Brussels in response to an urgent call from Turkey.

It's only the fifth time in history that such a meeting has been called—under Article 4—where member countries can request assistance if they believe their territorial integrity and security are being threatened...

I think Putin's response will be more along the lines of area denial than overt military strikes against Turkey. This is a dangerous development.

You really think NATO will provide military assistance if push comes to shove?

It depends on where the jet was brought down. Over Turkey or in Syrian airspace? Remember a Syrian SAM battery shot down a Turkish F-4 Phantom in June of 2012 and nobody saw fit to carry out the 'attack one, attack all' clause that is Article 5 of the NATO charter.

Turkey has said it believes that one of its fighter jets has been shot down by Syrian security forces.

The F-4 Phantom disappeared over the Mediterranean, south-west of Hatay province, not far from Syria's coast.

PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan said initially that "the other side have expressed regret" but later was unable to confirm what had happened.

After an emergency security meeting, his office said it was understood that Syria had brought the plane down.

I think Russia will bolster its ground-based air defences in Syria though and concentrate on area denial.

Russians will probably intensify their bombing operations.

And help the Kurds even more

Didn't spend long in Turkish airspace

Well, the Russians didn't need to do it. They weren't flying A380 so they could try and justify the turning circle.

UK and some other countries alike have gone up in arms crying foul many times whenever faced with unarmed Russian military aircraft entering their air space. This wasn't the first time they done it and have been warned off. They just never took it seriously enough. And this is what happens.

Russians didn't actually cross UK airspace.

And this wasn't really about one Russian plane crossing their borders for a few seconds
