UEFA Champions League: Match Day 1

Bayern didn't even play well and had stars out yet still looked comfortable. Same as Dortmund last night. The EPL might need to break more records next transfer window to fix this problem.
And even after spending all that money they'll still park the bus.

Remind me which club has broken the world transfer record the last seven times?

Disappointing result, but fair way to go. Remy should of started ahead of Drogba. Jose will learn his lesson.
Yeah not worried by the result. Goes to the show the difference a world class striker makes. As much as we all love Drogba, he is over the hill and very much on the decline. At least now we have Costa to bring in for City, not Torres or Eto'o!

Yeah, the love story with Drogba is nice, just hope it doesn't get to intense :p

Please, lets not use the T word....

only seen the highlights but there is a continual weak link in all these games

yaya.

once again he's needed to play the deeper role. once again he fails dismally at it with a ridiculous lack of attitude and effort. dinho looked an absolute star, again, 8 tackles says all the work he put in. while fernando was signed for this specific purpose, yaya continually coasting through european games is becoming tiresome, and costing us in these games. you can't expect to have one man working in the midfield and to come out on top against teams like bayern, madrid, etc.

fernando in for roma, dinho next to him and yaya further up the pitch should be better, and it is what pelle would've ideally wanted for this game. but yaya doesn't seem to have any type of leadership or take on the responsibility at all. and then to have a laugh and a joke with pep after the game? not a good look at all.

Gee the EPL got a lesson this week. Schalke have been near awful so far this season, think they got bundled out of the cup by a third division team - yet they can go to the current runaway leaders of the EPL and pinch a draw.

It's odd that even with the amount of money being spent by the top clubs, they are still often outclassed by teams in Germany and Spain.

Watched most of Dortmund/Arsenal - and Arsenal truly were bad (Can't believe Wegner still thinks they have 'sufficient depth' down back). About half each of the games this morning, Chelsea did enough to win, but City barely created a chance. Lucky for them Hart was huge or it could've been ugly.

german and spanish clubs spend just as much money. or have fortunate circumstances such as being able to nab players the quality of lewandowski for free.

we seem to be continually let down by 1 or 2 in europe whenever we play. the midfield is the utmost importance when you play a german team in particular, as they press press press. we had 1 midfielder against alonso, alaba and the other one who's name escapes me. yaya was an absolute passenger.

the thing about guys like pep and klopp is that in a short amount of time, they're able to get players to buy into their strategy, and it's a strategy that works really well in europe. frenetic, high energy, no space. this happened at barca with some players who may not have been considered the best, but they were a fearsome unit.

i don't feel that us in particular have developed that unit yet, or how to play in europe. it will come though. fernando would've made a massive difference tonight. and who knows, we get a penalty for a tackle from behind, we nick a 1-0 win, or a point still, then it's not all doom and gloom.

http://www.theguardian.com/football...eague-transfer-deadline-day-record-spend-850m

Premier League clubs have smashed the record for spending on transfers in the summer window after splashing out £835m on new players.

Spending across the other top divisions of Europe saw La Liga splash out £425m with Italy’s Serie A next on £260m followed by the Bundesliga in Germany with £250m and France’s Ligue 1 with £100m.

If half is equivalent to just as much then yes Spain has and Germany with not even a 3rd as much.
