Unluckiest coach to be fired

Mick Nunan at Fitzroy in 1996, don't be fooled by the single victory for the year he could coach.
Gerard Healey is a massive fan of Mick Nunan and has spoken of his unique tactics that brought a lot of success at SANFL level. It would've been interesting if he had coached a more developed team under better circumstances.

wasn't nunan famous for the "one goal in mind" grand final?

Paul Feltham had a broad experience at the Kangaroos as a player as he played there during their bleak years in the early 1970's and the golden years under Ron Barassi in the mid 1970's and was a 1975 premiership player.

Feltham as caretaker coach replaced the sacked Peter Knights at the Brisbane Bears late in the 1989 season.

Feltham coached the bears to 5 wins in the last 7 games of the season, a rare achievement for the bears in those days, but was not given a chance to prove himself in 1990 and was replaced by Norm Dare.

Dare ended up doing bugger all in 1990, the bears won the wooden spoon and won less games for the whole season than what Feltham won in 7 weeks.

I firmly believe that sometimes the unluckiest coach to be fired is sometimes synonymous with the unluckiest coach to be hired.

Michael Voss definitely comes to mind. At the time he was dismissed with about 6 games to go in 2013 the side was improving, in good form and a chance of the finals. Even if the Lions wanted to change coaches, why not wait until season's end?

Adelaide didn't have a great season in 2004, but it was a surprise to see Gary Ayres get dismissed after the Crows had crushed the Bulldogs by 9-goals at Football Park. I don't recall any other coaches getting dismissed mid-season after a win, especially a big win.

Richmond's new 1985 coach Paul Sproule delivered the rebuilding Tigers a 9-13 record, 8th position and definite improvement, but for some reason he was not reappointed for 1986, and never coached again.

Terry Wheeler was definitely unlucky at the Bulldogs in 1994, with the great work he had done with the team in the early 1990s.

Dick Reynolds. An appalling decision by Essendon. I chucked in my Essendon membership when this happened.

Surely the Matthew Knights calls aren't genuine? I'm assuming it's thinly disguised Hird trolling in the guise of praise for Knights? We conceded 100-120 points per game for 3 consecutive seasons. Our inability to defend was legendary at the time. Obviously going into a final without a ruckman (99 points) and playing Heath Hocking one out on Mark LeCras (12 goals) was the work of a misunderstood genius.

Ron Alexander. He was the West Coast Eagles first coach. The club finished the season 11-11 in their inaugural season in 1987 missing the finals by one game. He had to pull together a squad of players with no home ground, training at a different venue almost every night, very little backroom staff and a heavy travel schedule that often saw the Eagles play two games away in a row. For example, in round 20, West Coast played Brisbane at Carra on the Sunday afternoon and then front up five days later on a Friday night at the MCG. Not surprisingly they lost both matches. There were four times throughout the season were West Coast played on a Sunday afternoon and had to back it up the following Friday night. Ridiculous scheduling. They also lost to Essendon by five points and Geelong by six points. He was probably one of the unluckiest coaches to be sacked after one season.

Beat Carlton and Hawthorn in 1987 from memory, who went on to play off in the GF. Also from memory WCE won about 6 straight against the bears 87-90 so I think you need some fact checking!

I think you might have even had to do a 3 game away road trip once or twice back in the 80s believe it or not. What was the reason they game sacking Alexander at the time?

Yes as well as mid week games at waverly in the Panasonic cup. A league record 6 games interstate in a row.

Alexander got the sack as the board thought we underachieved for the list we had and there was a belief John Todd's hard line approach would be better than Ron Alexander's "one of the boys" attitude.
WCE has the best first year record of 11 and 11 for all non foundation afl/VFL clubs. Is also equal with essendon and Geelong for most wins in first VFL/afl season

I don't think the Geisch was ever really unleashed at the tigers

He does have the best record of any Richmond coach since Francis Bourke. But he inherited a 'ready' (if dysfunctional) team and didn't set the world on fire after some good wins as caretaker post-Walls.

Mike Patterson suffered a similar fate. He was appointed coach in 1984 but was still given the boot at the end of that season despite the tigers missing the finals by only 1 game and improving from 3rd last the year before.

Richmond had 4 coaches in 6 years - Bourke, Patterson, Sproule, Jewell (again), in that order.

Not sure if anybody mentioned Alan Joyce, but just look at Hawthorn's implosion in the years following his sacking. We were run by absolute nongs before Dicker saved the day.

Other honourable mentions include Alves, Sheldon, Ratten, Thomas, Daniher.

Recent times I would say Bailey, Ratten, and Malthouse (technical).

Glad Ratten was sacked though as he is doing great work at Hawthorn.
