FTA-TV VFL and WAFL Television Rights

It seems Channel 7 were very pleased with how the SANFL coverage went in 2014, with them buying out the broadcast rights to the VFL and WAFL, as the ABC suffer budget cuts at the same time.

Could be a good thing for the competitions and the fans.

Maybe Channel 7 can use the WAFL, VFL and SANFL telecasts as testing grounds for up and coming commentators to maybe step up eventually to the AFL. But I wouldn't hold my breath on that, it is Channel 7 after all.

Most of the guys who worked on the ABC actually worked away from the channel itself. They come from small media companies.

So it would not surprise me if Cleary and Rhys-Jones for example are retained.

In South Australia they apparently made a decision to not go with anyone from the ABC just to have a fresh start. They did use Mark Sodestrom who had previously worked at the ABC but not in the final year.

It worked well for them in SA in particular showing a game if there was no free to air AFL on that Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

I didn't hear him, but there was an article in one of the papers today about Cleary and he does want to commentate on 7.

Game 1: VFL and SANFL into local markets, WA alternates which game they get each week
Game 2: All 3 markets get the WAFL game
