Leon Baker was born in Avenal, Victoria which is situated between Seymour, Nagambie and Euroa. Was zoned to Melbourne, tried out as a teen but decided he wasn't ready.

Trying to piece together his football career:

1956 born
????-1975 Avenel-Longwood Swans (VIC)
1976-1978? Souths Balaclava Swans (Cairns, QLD) (won the 1978 Crathern Medal (League B+F))
1979?-1980 South Bunbury Tigers (WA)
1981-1983 Swan Districts Swans (WA)
1984-1988 Essendon Bombers (VIC)

Incredible that he went from far north Queensland to far south Western Australia!! That's some trip.

As I'm researching, I'm wondering if the club choices were deliberate. It cannot merely be coincidence that he played for the Swans, then the Swans, then the Tigers who wore a red and white Swans top (no Swans team in the South West Football League, WA), then the Swan Districts Swans! I wonder if he entertained thoughts of moving to Sydney in the 80s, or whether he would have considered playing for the VFL Swans if they had have remained in Victoria. My guess is as a teen, the thought of playing for South Melbourne may have crossed his mind.

Stan " Pops " Heal played in Melbournes 1941 flag and followed it up with another flag with the Mighty Garlics a week later. I wonder how many have done the trifecta. WAFL/SANFL/VFL ?

Not sure there's been any off the top of my head.

I know John K. Watts played in premierships in WA, VIC and TAS and for a while that was considered to be unique. Not sure if it's since been equalled and/or surpassed.

Leon Baker had a decent start to senior football didn't he? Debuted 3 months shy of turning 25, and his first 5 years were not too shabby (and in 1980 he played in the South Bunbury premiership team). Essendon were mightly blessed to get such a star.

Can someone confirm his state of birth? Wikipedia says WA, wafl.com.au says Victoria.

YEAR | TEAM | POS | W/L | RESULT | HONORS
\1981 |Swan Districts|2 |16-5 |Prelim|
\1982 |Swan Districts|2 |16-5 |Premiership|
\1983 |Swan Districts|3 |16-5 |Premiership| B+F
\1984 |Essendon|1 |18-4 |Premiership| 2nd B+F, WA SoO
\1985 |Essendon| 1 |19-3 |Premiership| 2nd B+F, AA, WA SoO

Gerard Neesham had a similar ending to his career. His last decade (save for a season in Sydney) was remarkable:

YEAR | TEAM | POS | W/L | RESULT

\1981|Swan Districts|2|16-5|Prelim

Should add to that last Neesham one that he retired as a player after the 1989 Grand Final, but continued as Coach of Claremont, finishing as Runners-Up in 1990 and premiers in 1991. Claremont had a bad 1992, before again rebounding to be premiers in 1993.

He started 1994 undefeated through 10 rounds (IIRC) before leaving Claremont to take up Freo's head coaching position.

The other thing about Baker is a well-known story which John Todd told in his autobiography.

At the end of 1981 Baker left Swans and got in his car to travel up north in WA, not intending to come back to footy.

Due to either inclement weather or mechanical trouble (can't recall at the moment), he turned around and came back to Swans for the 1982 season and then played in four premierships in a row.

** WP full forward Ted Tyson played in 25 of these matches, and despite losing in each match, Tyson booted 150 goals, at an average of 6 per game, including 17.5 in WP's loss to Swan Districts in Rd 20, 1938.
One forgotten fact I discovered browsing through Trove is that the week after West Perth broke their losing streak and Tyson kicked his 1000th goal, the Cardinals lost to East Perth in torrential rain and Tyson was held goalless for the entire match.

According to my old 3AW Book of Footy Records, Tyson was kept goalless only three times in 227 games - if that is correct, the East Perth game must have ended a long sequence of matches kicking a goal. I know the VFL/AFL record for most consecutive games scoring a goal is 114 by Peter McKenna of Collingwood - would Tyson have surpassed that by the time he kicked his 1000th goal?

It’s also notable that in the game where Tyson was held goalless West Perth kicked 8-4 (52) to East Perth’s 15-19 (109), with their goals coming from Kingsbury (3), Golding (2), Pola, Rainoldi and Sampson. Ted Tyson kicked 101 of West Perth’s 201 goals in the other nineteen games of 1939, beating the seemingly elusive mark of 50 percent of a team’s goals by one player!
Claremont's season was remarkable. The only game they lost was in round 2, and that was by 11 points to West Perth. They drew with Subiaco in Round 9 and their remaining 21 matches (included finals) were victories - with their average winning margin being 54.71 points, all the while being Captain-Coach Gerard Neesham's first season as a league coach.
What’s amazing about the Subiaco draw is not so much that it interrupted the second-longest unbeaten streak in the league, but that it is the only game where neither West Perth nor East Perth nor Swan Districts played that has been drawn since the Tigers drew with South Fremantle 11.9 (75) each in round 12 of 1965. In other words, two thirds of the current league have played one drawn match in forty-eight seasons.

Tyson's three goalless matches were:

1938 (Rd 14) - 0.0*
1939 (Rd 17) - 0.1
1941 (Rd 19) - 0.5

*This one actually took some decent detective work for me to find. Since I've got goalscorers & behinds scorers for most matches back then... I had to search through team lists for Tyson' 228th match, since he scored at least once in his other 227 matches. That's where the Rd 14, 1938 match comes into things.

So if that's the first match in his career where he was kept goalless... it means Tyson goaled in his first 166 matches.

Also on Tyson's 1000th goal... don't take that as gospel. I've got Tyson scoring his 1000th goal three weeks after those reports, when he kicked 8.4 in West Perth's Rd 19 loss to Claremont.

I feel bad for the guy. In his whole life he thought he kicked over 1200 WAFL goals. It wasn't until much later that his tally was wound back to 1197.

Is there a stats site dedicated to goal progressions of Tyson, Doigy, Naylor and other goalkicking legends?

WAFLOnline only deals with 2006-.

But I've got some spare time this weekend and can post some here if you want?

Since he's got the WAFL goalkicking medal named after him, we'll start with Bernie Naylor's career.

Let's see if this works. I think this might be the best way to present the data in one (hopefully) easy-to-read chart.

Oh yeah, good luck to whoever faced up to Naylor in Round 18 matches. 71.13 across 8 matches.

Easy to read, doesn't hurt the eyes and it's fabulous.

Interesting to note Nayls missed 1942-45.

Any SA readers, the same for Ken Farmer please.
Tassies, likewise for Peter Hudson please.
And for Victorians, Perry Meka and Simon Goosey please.

That template is compact and the go to one.
Just click on the goal tally and it leads you to each game played.
Simple.

*I don't have behind tallies for most 1987 matches. Have taken figures from a year-end summary in that year's WA Football Register.

Add to that 72 goals and 41 behinds for Carlton in the mid '80's.

Cheers AFL Tables.

Apart from Peel Thunder, have all the traditional WAFL clubs played a drawn game against each other?

Sorry worbod only just saw your post now.

Easy answer is no.

Here are the teams which haven't drawn against each other:

Perth and Subiaco
Perth and South Fremantle
South Fremantle and Swan Districts

That format is too perfect.
Thank you JT.

Simple.
Bolded = I feel like I'm reciting an ANZ ad with Simon Baker.

Which forum or thread would you suggest is best for posting the figures for these players?
