Two more questions I don't think we've yet covered:

What is the highest goal tally by any team in which each player scored at least two goals?

What are some of the biggest Most Consecutive Games totals achieved in the WAFL?

I'll have a look for the first one (goalscorers) for you now.

On the second one - Stephen Michael played 217 straight matches for South Fremantle. Which could be the record.

Where it gets muddy is with Subiaco's Aidan Parker. Parker has played 195 straight matches since the start of the 2005 WAFL season, however he was on Adelaide's list in 2003/04 and played for South Adelaide and Glenelg, where he only missed one match through injury.

Before that - he had played the entire 2002 season without missing a game (20 matches), plus the final 14 matches of 2001.

So, discounting the SANFL sojourn, Parker's played 229 straight matches possible for Subiaco. But I don't think that should count, so his tally probably stands at 195 at the moment.

What is the highest goal tally by any team in which each player scored at least two goals?

I don't have any easy search function for this... so it took some old-fashioned trawling through an excel spreadsheet to come up with:

Notes:
  • The 'Most Goals' column refers to the leading goalkicker for the match in question, not for the round overall. These were posted here.
  • Starting from 1975 - Preliminary Final winning scores were 106, 139, 117, 177, 134, 181, 178, 131, 175, 114, 133, 168, 116, 124, 116, 129 and 146. 17 Straight seasons of the PF winning score being 100+.
  • The only instances above of one team setting a round record against the same team twice in the same season were Swan Districts vs Subiaco in 1979, and Perth vs East Fremantle in 1977.
  • Oddly enough, there are no instances of the highest score of the round being a tie, although Round 10 (Claremont's 240) is one point higher than two identical scores by West Perth in the same round six season apart (37.17 (239) in 1981 and 1987).

Using the stats from the recent round by round goal-kicking stats provided by Up For Grabs, I decided to calculate the highest goal averages held by each featured player during their career.

More great stats UFG.
Interestingly I thought I had heard of every WAFL player since 1980 but I cant for the life of me remember Claremont's leading goalkicker from that Round 12 1982 clash vs Perth in Murray Smith?
I certainly remember Ray Smith from Claremont the 1981 Premiership backman but not a Murray Smith!

Murray Smith only played three matches for Claremont - all in 1982.

Don't quote me, but his inclusion that day was because the WA team was off playing South Australia in Adelaide, and Warren Ralph was our Full-Forward on that fateful day (WA got belted by 116 points).

That 100 point win table you sent to my Gmail JT, did the newspapers of the day forget some 1/4 Time, 1/2 Time and 3/4 Time scores?

Because I see some gaps in some results.

Yeah - most of those would be during 1942-44, yeah?

If so - matches got short coverage during the war years.

If there are any others missing - let me know and I'll see what I can find.

Just checked my old Footy Budgets from back then & yes there was an M.Smith playing at Claremont.
He must have been a bit unlucky to only play 3 league games after kicking 6 goals in one of them.
Keep up the good work mate. :thumbsu:

1942-44 and 1905-07.

The WWII-era ones are as complete as I can get them at the moment. Having trawled through scans of The West Australian, The Sunday Times and The Daily News... I don't think there's any more info to be found.

As for the 1905-07 ones... I'll double check but I think I've looked in the same sources to no avail.

I know there are some matches during the end of the 1922 season where the quarter-by-quarter details aren't known because of a printers' strike across Perth which affected all newspapers, and there were other matches earlier in the century which don't have the full details because of a royal visit to Perth which took up pretty much the whole newspaper.

I'll always see if there's other sources though.

Two more questions I don't think we've yet covered:

What is the highest goal tally by any team in which each player scored at least two goals?

What are some of the biggest Most Consecutive Games totals achieved in the WAFL?

Joel Cornelius from Swan Districts played 219 games straight from round 21, 1995 to round 23, 2006. He played two other games in 1995, round 7 and round 18, then did not miss another match from round 21 until his retirement at the end of 2006! Playing just 3 finals two in 2004 and one in 2005.

These are the qtr x qtr scores I a missing. Let me know if I can fill in any gaps.

That Rd 1 EF v MJ match is interesting. For starters, it lists EF as scoring 15.24 (114), not the 15.23 (113) on the WAFL website.

Here's the match report from the following day's Sunday Times.

Looks like EF had their entire first quarter score forfeited for fielding an extra player on the ground, yet still won the match by 92 points.

Hello,

I am looking at present for a list of the lowest aggregate scores in the WAFL since 1919: the lists existing are of no use for more modern games of note such as:
  1. between Swan Districts and Perth at Bassendean in 1973
  2. between West Perth and East Perth at Arena Joondalup in 2000 and 2003
That first game is little-remembered today even though Swan Districts’ score was the equal-lowest in the WANFL between 1969 and 1979, and no club again won after being goalless at half-time until 2002 if I am correct. I do not know of any other match with an aggregate as low as 71 points (8-23) between 1967 and 1999: two games on 30 July 1966 had aggregates of 62 (West Perth v Subiaco) and 70 (Claremont v East Perth), though the 22.1 millimetres of rain from BOM data seems moderate compared to numerous other match days in WAFL history.

Would it be possible to also give lists of WAFL teams that have:
  1. won after being goalless at half-time?
  2. won after being goalless in the second and third quarters?
  3. won after being goalless in the third and fourth quarters?

Thanks for that information!

I wonder how many teams since Claremont came in have been goalless at half-time more than once in a season??

In 1973, Perth were goalless at half-time twice in three weeks, after no team had been goalless at half-time since East Fremantle were massacred by the Demons almost six years to the day at Lathlain Park (I wonder if any old Perth fans today can still recall that game vividly??) East Perth were goalless at half-time twice in the very wet season of 1964, but how many other teams since 1926 have equalled that ignominy??

Leon Baker was born in Avenal, Victoria which is situated between Seymour, Nagambie and Euroa. Was zoned to Melbourne, tried out as a teen but decided he wasn't ready.

Trying to piece together his football career:

1956 born
????-1975 Avenel-Longwood Swans (VIC)
1976 Souths Balaclava Swans (Cairns, QLD)
1977-1980 South Bunbury Tigers (WA) (won the 1978 Crathern Medal (League B+F))
1981-1983 Swan Districts Swans (WA)
1984-1988 Essendon Bombers (VIC)

Incredible that he went from far north Queensland to far south Western Australia!! That's some trip.

.
Just some info on the great Leon Baker. He had only one season at South Bunbury, 1980, when the Tigers went through the season undefeated. The Crathern Medal is awarded in the Cairns footy comp. The SWFL (or SWNFL as it was back then) fairest and best is awarded the Hayward Medal.

I think you will find Bakes was definately at South Bunbury in 1977 as well & maybe 79 before the 1980 season & then finally on to Swan Districts & Essendon!

Happened a few times. Claremont in 1945 had the displeasure of being goalless at half time two weeks in a row:
