I hate the Blues with every fibre of my being, but after losing Matthew White we clearly lack speed and dont have a quality small forward. There aren't many players available at the moment but there is one that comes to mind that is out of favor... Jeff Garlett. I think we should make a play for him though a trade, thoughts?

My thoughts are there is a trade thread where this has been discussed

Definitely.

Obviously a little disenchanted at Carlton however he has proven to be a quality player. Probably more likely to go back to WA though. West Coast would be a strong suitor. I wouldn't imagine Freemantle would be too keen considering they already have quality options in Ballentyne, Walters and Mayne.

I would give our 2nd round pick for him which would probably be enough (pick in the late 20's/early 30's). He would have been worth a top 20 pick at the end of last year.

Don't need Garlett, Garlett has been passed over at Carlton by Menzel who like Cotchin & Martin can also go through the midfield. If we add more depth to the midfield we can use the likes of Cotchin & Martin as small forwards. Their 1-1 ability is far superior to what Garlett offers and both have shown they can kick goals from either marking the ball or winning a ground ball contest.

Edwards has more worth in midfield. Cotchin, Martin and Deledio are good mid-size rotation options. Gordon has more worth as a high half forward (similar to the Chris Knights role) as shown on the weekend. Lloyd isn't quick.

I agree with OP, we are lacking a genuine small, crumbing, pacey forward. Does anyone remember how much Betts, Yarran and Gartlett tore us up in the Elim final last year?

FF Gartlett Riewoldt Resting Mid (Cotchin, Lids, Martin)
F Griffiths Vickery Gordon/Edwards

You have convinced me.
Football is changing and mids resting forward is where its headed.
Dylan Sheil please.

Betts like Garlett is only used as a small forward, rarely ventures into the midfield. It effectively makes you a man down on rotations. Like I said in my post with guys like Martin Cotchin S.Edwards Gordon Lloyd & even McDonough you have those smaller types that not only can do damage up forward but can also go through the middle and give us more options. With the way the AFL are intent of reducing interchange numbers we need to have those types of players in the side not permanent FPs

William Hoskin Elliot

Would get Gartlett for depth if he was cheap enough though. Has more upside than Llyod. Llyod is unfortunately A.Edwards the second... Tall man trapped in a small mans body.

I understand your point and agree to a certain extent. Although I do believe every team can afford to have one specialist forward pocket/small forward.

What I'd like to see is more mids who have the capacity and are prepared to run hard in both directions. We look so good streaming forward but remain exposed on the turnover. Although to be fair, we have improved this aspect of our game in recent weeks.

Breust, Walters/Ballantyne, Motlop, Lindsay Thomas, Wingard.

The exception seems to be Sydney. Though Mcglynn and Cunningham do it for them.

They tore us up because they we were s**t not because they were good. Look at Hampson and Betts now! Even Garlett is failing at CFC.

We have a speedy small forward already - McBean!

I wouldn't mind Garlett but only if the price is right. I think Lloyd will be a solid option in the long term, has great goal sense.

Take his mate Adam Kennedy too in a package.
One to kick the goals, the other to shut blokes down and distribute the pill.
Ten years out of each.
Trade Hampson for them.
It's a fair deal.
Get it done tigers...

I think our clubs rates mids that can rotate through the foward line higher than a stay at home small foward.
