RE: Waters' kicking, the question is whether 2012 or 2013 was the aberration.
Given the upswing that he experienced with his kicking from 2010-2012, I'm inclined to believe that it was his poor 2013 that was the aberration.
Waters' stats between 2010 and 2013 are as follows
  • 2010 - 12.3 kicks per game, 3.2 clangers, 3 rebound 50s, 1.8 inside 50s, 0.2 goal assists, 71.4% DE
  • 2011 - 11.7 kicks per game, 2.5 clangers, 3.5 rebound 50s, 1.5 inside 50s, 0.4 goal assists, 74.2% DE
  • 2012 - 14 kicks per game, 2.2 clangers, 3 rebound 50s, 2.6 inside 50s, 0.5 goal assists, 79.9% DE
  • 2013 - 14.9 kicks per game, 3.6 clangers, 5.9 rebound 50s, 1.4 inside 50s, 0 goal assists, 68.5% DE
So from 2010-2012 there is a nice downward trend in clangers and a nice upward trend in disposal efficiency.
What made 2012 all the more impressive was that he achieved pretty significant improvement in DE%, as well as clangers, while being more attacking (drop in rebound 50s, significant jump in inside 50s, more goal assists, more goals).
Was it that he just had a particularly good season, or had he found his ideal role?

What stands out in 2013 (although granted it is a small sample size), is that he was pushed back further, amassing pretty much double the amount of rebound 50s and half the amount of inside 50s compared to 2012.

What I'd say from this is that:
1) he suffered from a lack of continuity (never strung more than 3 games together) in 2013, and;
2) when playing deeper in defence in 2013, the attacking play he'd developed the year before became detrimental because he was enjoying less time and space to take risks;
3) we're more inclined to remember the costly turnovers close to goal that were all too frequent in 2013, rather than ones up the ground in earlier years

Issues: obviously clangers and DE% are imperfect stats (especially considering that they also include handballs), sample sizes in 2013 and 2011, and the team as a whole performed differently in different years.

Conclusion: Waters' kicking had been improving consistently before his injury riddled 2013, and he probably plays best further up the ground where he has more time and space to take risks. With that being said, we might be better off trying to give Sheppard, and to a lesser extent, Ellis, more continuity rather than hoping Waters can string some games together (if he ever returns to fitness).

Yeah I'm pretty bored.

Very interesting read, I agree with you in that he needs to string games together and get some continuity going. Hopefully he can have a ripping summer and play a few NAB games, then would be cherry ripe for round one.

2012 was his perfect role IMO, running forward creating and bagging the odd sausage roll. I remember him slotting a few long range rippers in 2012 kicking over the mass of players inside our forward 50.
