Weird football scores

How about this for a weird scoring match.

Sydney kicked 18.10 this weekend with no player scoring 1 goal, 5 players scoring 2 goals, 1 player scoring 3 goals and Tippett scoring 5.

Reasonably sure it has not happened this year.

the three winners so far this round have ended on 112...

17-10; 16-16; and 15-22 :eek:

Next two have ended with winners with 104.

Carlton and Richmond both scoring 15.14.

Adelaide had to spoil the party though.

Will forever recall the oddity of the Weagles 1992 GF winning score 16.18.114.....with Sumich 6, Matera 5, Wilson 3 and Evans 2.

Four goalkickers, 16 goals and no singles...Ugh!!! :(

The fact that 21 years later i can still rattle them off proves that. Destroying the theory of having a multi-pronged forward line.

Geelong vs Port last night....

Geelong...........2.2.14.......3.6.24........8.12.60........13.18.96

Port Adel.........3.2.20........7.5.47........8.5.53..........12.8.80

Probably nothing too unusual, but both sides kicked the same score in two of the four quarters, Geelong with 5.6.36 in both the 3rd and 4th, while Port added 4.3.27 in the 2nd and 4th quarters.

In addition Geelong cracks the double-digit winning streak over Port with 10, bookended by finals.

The scoring pattern of one team scoring the same tally of goals and behinds in the 3rd and 4th quarters and the other team scoring the same tally of goals and behinds in the 2nd and 4th quarters has happened 22 times before.

The last time it happened was:

(Six of the 23 have involved Geelong and two have now involved Port Adelaide.)

I want to have a look at three games from the 1995 season

Round 3, 1995: Richmond defeated Hawthorn at Waverley Park 4.16.40 to 5.4.34. Interesting enough final score, But the quarter by quarter scores are unique. 1.5 to 3.0; 1.11 to 4.0; 3.11 to 5.1 and 4.16 to 5.4.

Round 5, 1995: Sydney defeated Adelaide 20.24.144 to 12.15.87 at the SCG, but trailed 9.15 to 12.14 at three quarter time. They kicked 11.9 to 0.1 in the final quarter.

Round 9, 1995: Adelaide defeated Hawthorn 9.6.60 to 7.16.58 at Football Park, but trailed at half time 1.1.7 to 5.11.41. Hawthorn left the door ajar and Adelaide stormed home. 34 points isn't a huge lead, but having scored just 1.1 in a half of footy...

Round 2, 1996. Geelong defeated St Kilda 26.8.164 to 20.14.134.at half time the score was 16.4.100 to 8.10.58 and the three quarter time score was 21.6.132 to 14.12.96. In both the third quarter and the final quarter, Geelong kicked 5.2 to St Kilda 6.2.

Here are two similiar with the Geelong score being the lowest for a team with 21 more scoring shots.

The above is the most that a team trailing at 3/4 time has won a last quarter by - next highest is:

The above is the lowest 1/2 time score for a team trailing by 34 points or more that went on to win the match - next two lowest are:

The above is the highest quarter aggregate scores (70 points) for a match where each team scored the same tally of goals and behinds in the last quarter as they did in the third quarter - next highest: 55 points (in 1955!)

Roger my friend, you are a genius. I love this stuff. Record breaking scores, I have never found someone who has shared my passion. But you exceed my head for this stuff, so I am jealous about that. But you will always be able to answer my questions when I have them. Thanks for taking the time to find some more games that were similar to the ones I mentioned.

After yesterday's big game, Hawthorn have now won a grand final with a score in the 70s range:

11.11 (77) in 2013.
They have also won with a score in the 80s: 12.10 (82) in 1971;
in the 90s: 13.16 (94) in 1961;
in the 100s: 13.22 (100) in 1976;
in the 110s: 16.14 (110) in 1986 and 18.7 (115) in 2008;
in the 120s: 18.13 (121) in 1978;
in the 130s: 20.19 (139) in 1991;
in the 140s: 20.20 (140) in 1983 and 21.18 (144) in 1989;
and in the 150s: 22.20 (152) in 1988.

Not often does a score of 145 result in a loss, especially a loss of more than 100 points. In the Sydney Football League on April 28, 1979, the following scoreline emerged:

Newtown 6.3 16.10 29.11 43.17 (275)
Balmain 6.3 10.8 16.12 22.13 (145)

Then, that same weekend, in the VFA first division, 145 bobbed up twice more:

Preston 27.23 (185) d Sandringham 23.7 (145)
Prahran 24.24 (168) d Frankston 22.13 (145)

A bit obsure as it doesn't involve games for Premiership points, but in 1973 the Bulldogs beat the Hawks in a pre-season practice match at the Western Oval
- by 1 point, 13.14 92 to 14.7 91
Post season that same year, both sides travelled to Manuka in the ACT and played an exhibition match there, which the Dogs won
- by 1 point, 13.14 92 to 13.13 91

Not sure if it really qualifies as a strange score, however in the Carlton v Sydney semi-final this year, Carlton didnt score at all in the third quarter, and Sydney didnt score at all in the fourth quarter. So no-one scored in one half of the ground in the second half - you'd be spewing if you bought a finals ticket on that end of the oval.

One of only 25 League matches (the first in 1898) where one team were scoreless in the 3rd quarter and the other failed to score in the last quarter and the first time that it has happened in a final. Only the 2nd time that this has happened since 1965. Previous: Round 5, 1978 - St Kilda v Geelong at Waverley Park - Geelong scoreless in the 3rd quarter to St Kilda's 7.9-51 - St Kilda scoreless in the last quarter to Geelong's 3.1-19 - final score: St Kilda 14.14-98 v Geelong 9.11-65.

17 of these matches were won by the team scoreless in the last quarter with 1 drawn.
Carlton has previously played in 5 of these matches (1898, 1900, 1902, 1908 and 1922, winning two of them. This was the first such scoreline in a match for Sydney/SM.

Bit of a different stat but in 2005 West Coast hosted Sydney in a qualifying final and won by 4 points, however in the grand final Sydney won by 4 points, Ben Cousins won the Brownlow medal. In 2006 they again played each other in the qualifying final but this time it was Sydney who won, by 1 point. And due to to the previous years fate they went on to lose to West coast in the Grand final by 1 point, and Adam Goodes won the Brownlow that year. This scenario is almost guaranteed to NEVER happen again

we went to an Essendon v St Kilda game back in 1994, very high scoring and St Kilda kicked 18.2.110. One of those 2 behinds were rushed, anyone have a copy of this game?

Remember talking about it on the way back home, both points may have actually been rushed through by the opposition.
Certainly one of the most proficient offensive displays I ever seen.

The first three games of Round 2 saw the winners post a score in the 90s and the losers a score in the 80s:

Richmond 14.14 (98) d Carlton 12.14 (86)
Hawthorn 13.12 (90) d Essendon 12.14 (86)
St. Kilda 15.5 (95) d GWS 13.10 (88)

Adelaide's first 3 games this year, have resulted in combined scores of 30.20, 30,20, & 30.25.

Aldinga football club have a combined losing margin of over 700 points.
