It is great that we are past the stage of throwing first round draftees into the senior side in round 1 and expecting them to improve our side straight away. We can afford to give players like Ellis time to develop in the VFL and his injury won't affect our performance in the AFL. Hopefully he rips it up in the VFL this year though and eventually earns his AFL debut.

Totally agree ,Hope those days are gone never to return. Where we can allow our newbies to develop at the lower level....

that's one way of looking at it.

The other way to look at it is that the 1st round draft picks were good enough to force themselves into the team by round one.
Jury is out if Ellis, Lennon are good enough

Ellis hasn't even played!
Why are you saying the jury is out? That makes no sense at all. The jury hasn't even sat in the jury box yet for him! So they can't be out which means they've heard the evidence and are still deliberating.
Even for Lennon, the jury have only heard the opening statements so they also can't be out!

Lennon and Ellis both missed significant parts of their first pre-season so were never playing round 1. Vlas didn't play round and we made finals.

You have to be joking
Far easier for a Round 1 pick to "force" themselves into the side when you are on the bottom of the ladder
Bit harder when you have depth and are playing finals as the standard of player you need to force out is much higher

not sure I agree with that.

If we drafted Cotchin/Martin/B Ellis this year they would be playing in round 1, even if they were 18 yrs old. Just saying
