Delisted Maverick Weller

Before we drafted him there were a few stories being floated around that Maverick Weller was nothing but a big headed , self centred arsehole.
After seeing him in a few interviews now i gotta say the young man is coming across as very well spoken , down to earth and grateful to get drafted by us and have another chance to prove himself.
Really looking forward to see how Mav goes next season. At 21 with a few pre-seasons already under his belt and already having a decent build he might end up being a real surprise packet next yr.
Think he has had a bit of a wake up call and is ready to give 100% for the Saints.
Great decision by the Saints IMO:thumbsu:

I always forget that he's only 21. He has a mature body, and like you said, speaks well. He feels like a mature aged recruit.

From what he said around the time that he left Gold Coast, I think he's looking for a chance to prove himself. He'll come off the rookie list a better player.

I wouldn't be surprised if Weller doesn't quickly make it into our best 22 he certainly showed signs at Gold Coast and Saints stand to benefit enormously from the development that he had from them.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if he plays in R1 if he's on the senior list. Hopefully we haven't put anyone on the LTI by then though.
Personally I think he should be in the side rnd one. He's well developed body wise after a few pre seasons and is at the perfect age. But somebody help me out, do we have to wait for an injury for him to be put on the senior list??
I want him in the side but I don't want some poor bugger to have to get injured for him to get a game.

For him to play R1 someone will have needed to be placed on the LTI list.

However I believe at Round 11 or 12 we can have a 'nominated rookie' who can be promoted without an LTI.

So yeah, for him to get a game before Round 11 we'll need to see someone get injured pretty badly. It's kind of strange when you think about it. These guys only real chances occur when a senior player suffers a huge misfortune.

Thanks for clearing that up for me :thumbsu:

"Disaster" is a tad strong. They need to go on the LTI list. Last year, tons of the players went on that list towards the end of the year, just to have pre-pre-season surgery. I suspect we'd have to do that with a few kids, vets, etc at the end of the year anyway. That's when we'll upgrade Minch and Eli, if all goes well. But yeah, the mid-year rookie upgrade is Mav's to lose, you'd reckon.

This is an interesting article off the Suns' board from a few months back. It may be equally relevent to the Saints now that Mav is one of us:

"I figured seeing as we are apparently in the box seat to pick him up in the 2014 draft, I thought we should start a thread on young Lachie. For those who don't know he is the young brother of Mav Weller and looks to be a fantastic prospect coming through the ranks. Has just been selected as one of 4 Queensland players in the AIS-AFL squad.

Has also played 2 games for the SUNS NEAFL team this year, named in the top 3 players each time, kicking 2 and 1 goals respectively

Lachlan Weller 23-2-96 180cm, 71kg Queensland/SUNS Academy/Broadbeach
Medium midfielder with prolific ball winning ability. Can play inside and win the ball at stoppages as well as playing outside and delivering the ball with excellent accuracy. Has very clean hands as well as excellent game sense and awareness. His vision and decision making when the ball is in his hands is exceptional. Averaged 18 disposals at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Weller: New Zealand an untapped resource

ST KILDA rookie Maverick Weller believes the AFL will see an influx of New Zealand-born AFL players in future years as the Saints pioneer the venture which began with last year’s Anzac Day match in Wellington.

Weller was just one of 10 Saints to make the trip across the Tasman this week to promote the game in schools and local communities, an experience which he says has been very rewarding.

“We’ve seen about 800 kids today and yesterday was the same,” Weller told SAINTS.com.au.

“We’ve just been taking them through some fundamentals of Aussie Rules and it’s been received really well. The kids are excited to do something new.”

But it was Weller's day. And while he nudged the magical 40-possession barrier, he was far from a free-wheeling ball-winner with attack his only method. Rather, the 22-year-old was given the task of limiting Liam Anthony's influence and did so exceptionally well, holding the usually prolific midfielder to just four touches at half-time and 14 for the game.

Sandringham: 2.3 10.6 11.9 18.9 (117)
North Ballarat: 3.1 4.2 8.8 12.10 (82)

Goals:
T. Dennis-Lane 4, M. Weller 3, S. Dunell 2, T. Milera 2, A. Siposs 2, Y. Zijai 2, D. Markworth 2, B. Longer.

Best:
M. Weller, C. Shenton, T.Dennis-Lane, A. Cockie, Y. Zijai, S. Fisher, S.Dunell

Here's what the 2015 Champion Data Prospectus had to say about Weller:

Rated below average in most KPI's for a mid and recorded the worst retention rate from his disposals of the top 15 disposal-winners at the Saints.

Attended the 5th most centre bounces at the club but had little impact, with the Saints winning a clearance 38% of the time he attended - the lowest % of the top 10 at the club.

The name some of the people he tagged but don't tell you how he went...Selwood, Gibbs and Griffen.

From discard to leader: Weller's remarkable turnaround

"He's also been voted by his peers into the leadership group, with his non-conventional meditation and visualisation techniques making him a unique role model for his younger and older contemporaries.

"I really believe in myself. I just back myself in," Weller told AFL.com.au this week.

"I think that and the way I prepare for games is probably something that has resonated with the younger group and maybe put me in a position to be in the leadership group in such a small time.

"They know I believe in what I think and I believe in them as well."

always was.
Do an analysis of the potential benefits of both.
Best case analysis for Jolly , he played last year for hickey, played fantastic, and we maybe win another game or two, then he retires
Actually I would've said the best-case scenario would be he embraces the club, doesn't go on TV and we have a dual premiership ruckman as a longterm specialist coach for Hickey, Longer, Pierce and Grundy. On the playing side of it Weller comes out ahead (although he quite easily could've busted out), all factors considered it was certainly worth consideration the other way.
