THE AFL has revealed that the trial involving players having their names printed on the back of their jumpers will take place in round five of this year's home and away season.

As for why the AFL was trialling names on the backs of jumpers rather than introducing it for an entire season, McLachlan said, "The tradition in our game is incredibly important and we want to see what the reaction is, even though it's got strong support from our clubs.

"There's also an executional element. Our jumpers are different. There's a tight space across the back because they cut in at the sleeves.

"There'll be some restrictions around the size of the letters and how that will work.

"We want to see what it looks like when we actually execute it and if it's going to work."

The backs of AFL jumpers are already busy, with many clubs, including the Sydney Swans, Western Bulldogs and the Brisbane Lions, featuring lettering that recognises their past.

"We won't touch that," McLachlan said.

"Whether it's South Melbourne on the back of the Swans' jumpers or FFC on the back of the Bulldogs' jumpers, we won't be touching that.

"We won't be messing with that tradition."

No need for it. More gimmicks from the top.
Isn't there enough crap on the jumpers already without putting names on that most people won't be able to read?
So would a bib with the players position on it. **** the afl and their needless dribble
In theory i'm actually all for it, but have to see what it looks like on gameday to tell for sure.
I'm really neither here nor there with it, I just remembered it and was wondering when we will see it

Such a tacky, classless idea. Along with the new HTB interpretation it is a ploy designed to cater for an americanized market and that is all.

No harm in trying to expand overseas however the irony remains in trying to lure external markets, the AFL is increasingly distancing itself from the local market that props it up in the first place. Deluded fools.

Money maker to sell more jumpers. They become brand names that the kids love and want to wear. JORDAN... RONALDO... MESSI.

Also when you buy your son's jumper and he chooses his number, they get to sling you an extra few dollars per letter for the name.

Good luck to those in the club store if KOLODJASHNIJ becomes a hit with the kids (that's probably wrong anyway).

Why is this an AFL thing? Why not leave it up to clubs to decide what they want to do with THEIR jumpers?

Personally sick of the AFL dictating to clubs what should be club matters.

Clubs are democratic organisations run by boards who have to justify their actions to their voting members.

The AFL is accountable to no-one - and it shows in how they go about running football.

Don't see why anyone would have a problem with it, at all.

Who cares if other sporting codes do it? There's a reason AFL is less popular than most; it's particularly hard for casual fans to get into it.

This is a step in the right direction.

Er, no. Footy is not harder to get into than most and even if that were the case putting names on jumpers wouldn't solve it.

So why should we dumb it down? Why is the onus on us to do it? We are the most popular code in Australia already, this is merely a ploy to stick more greedy fingers in greater international pies. Maybe the AFL should spend more money on spreading awareness/the rules of the game instead of trying to fit a round game in a square hole. Besides, I don't see how numbers on the back of guernsey's will provide a panacea if they're hardly going to be seen anyway and as you say, the game is hard to grasp at the best of times.
