Opinion Where is Steve Johnson at?

Players are people, not commodities. You can't just cash them in like casino chips, there are ramifications for how everybody else at the club feels about it.

Was a totally different case - we didn't trade him out, we just couldn't reach agreement on a new contract and he chose to continue his footy career elsewhere. We didn't gain anything for his loss, and ergo he didn't have "value".
We could of told Johnson the same thing though. Take the GWS offer or only expect a handful of games.

Not sure SJ has the rig to take full games back to back right now....

Management...

Goodes would rather play VFL than take the vest....

Yes, but that's only true if we were only going to play him for a handful of games, whereas clearly he is (a) a walk-up start, and (b) shown excellent durability in terms of stringing games together. Chapman was still the former (though he had lost a yard or two), just not the latter at the time.

Johnson polled 19 votes in the Brownlow last year which is something people here are overlooking. Now why would we force his hand coming off the year he had?
Because the year you had is not the year you are having! The body gives up when it's ready, and that is usually well before the mind. I can assure you I have seen very good players, at all levels, become very ordinary in the blink of an eye, weather it be an injury, losing a yard of pace or the game just passes them by, it happens very quickly.
Sure, he might eek out a few good passages of play every now and then but at what cost to team development? Personally, I would much rather see him give it away and open a spot for someone else, with an immediate transition to the coaching box in some capacity.

Seriously??
Starting him as the sub?
Chris Scott I love your work, but you've lost me today.

If he has back problems as many seem to think, it wasn't a bad call. He was effective when he came on..but he certainly looks a little restricted to me.

Chapman has had only one injury plagued year in his whole career. Johnson has had a major injury every second year of his career and you say Chapman was lacking durability. what the????

The issue was that he missed basically the entire year with a hamstring injury, an injury that had been recurring and that he had missed games with over the past couple of years. I admit that at the end of an 18-week hamstring injury I thought he did not have another two years in him.

because other players havent missed seasons or multiple seasons. we even recruited two players in McIntosh and Rivers who had more then a season out with injury problems that had been recurring for years. then their is Menzel, Vardy, Cowan etc.

Yes, but they weren't 31/32 with muscle wear-and-tear issues.

Anyway, to get back to the original point, Stevie J still has something to offer I think - but has lost of lot of consistency, simply because (I suspect) his body won't allow him to do what it used to. I think he'll be invaluable in a Riccardi-esque role this year, but I can't see him going beyond it - if not for the club's sakes, at least for his own.

I'll grant you that and it makes me a touch hypocritical but Chapman was offered a contract and didn't wish to accept it. For a trade to be completed, both parties need to agree... Chapman did.
And SJ didn't. Case closed I would have thought.

No doubt he would like to have started better to the year but still think he offers the team his abilities and no doubt he will be a coach, hopefully at the cats

Bomber on 360 seemed a bit perplexed as to why SJ was the sub and asked if anyone had got to the bottom of why he wore the vest.

Has gone on to suggest (seemingly anecdotally) that our older players are dropping off possibly due to diminished motivation as the only reason players in their twilight play on is for premiership success and that unlike the other 'old' lists (Freo, Haw and Syd) who have veterans playing well because they're still in the window while we're not.

I'd have to say that it seems very feasible for that to be the case, but he also said it's hard to manage as you can't get rid of them all at once.

It's very true.
Kelly, Enright, McIntosh, Stokes & Rivers we could juuuuust cover in terms of senior players experience & teaching the youth.
But if Stevie J & Bartel decided to retire early at the end of 2015 then it would be an even bigger challenge.
But at the same time you don't want the senior players to play on one more year than they should, that is where getting the balance is so crucial.

I expect Stevie J to start right in the centre bounce next to Selwood & Blicavs/Guthrie/Kelly against the Tigers.
Predicting him to get 25+ touches & at least a goal.

I am hoping he is one of the senior players that plays on next year, but if he does I only want him in the Forward 50 all year long.

Have to admit, if true, that's very disappointing. The one team our veterans were never able to conquer was Hawthorn, and they'll forever live with that, just as Mooney following the 08 grannie.
I would have assumed losing to them in finals (twice in successive seasons), was enough motivation to finally set the record straight. Guess not.
