There's a huge list of premiership players who were average, and a similar list of players who were out and out stars who never managed to win a flag.

Bob Skilton and his Brownlows for a return of 1 finals appearance compared to Cameron Mooney's 1999 performance shows that anyone can be carried to a flag, and that it's not relevant in talking about player vs player quality.

Hodge has never been Hawthorns most important player in my opinion, if he was missing it wouldn't affect the result that badly. Reiwoldt has been the Saints most important his whole career and if he missed games it would hugely affect results.

Hodge is not a better finals player than either Ablett or Judd. He has 2 norm smiths but it's not accurate to say that McLeod, Ayres and Hodge are the best finals players ever. I agree he is better than the other 2 in finals but Roo has been immense in some finals too. Actually, Mitchell overall has performed better in finals over his career than Hodge (my opinion obviously).

Hodge has been Hawthorn's best finals player easily since we first made them in 2007. And has dominated many more finals than just the 2 he got the NSMs for.

Ablett, Judd and Riewoldt have indeed all had better individual careers, though Hodge's has still been great. However Hodge does have the better finals record than all of them, and they have all been pretty damn good in that regard too.

It's no disgrace to Hodge to say those 3 players have been better.

Likewise, it's no disgrace to those 3 blokes to say Hodge has the better finals record.

Thread captures all that frustrates me in football. Hodge is great but we compare him to the wrong players

Riewoldt made the Saints pay him over a million a season not to go to the Gold Coast if he did what Hodge and other Hawks and the Cats did and signed for less for the team then the Saints would have had the cap space to add a quality player that could have made the difference in two close gfs.

The Saints had a heap of room in the cap which they used on Lovett, it just didn't pay off.

Both champions.

Top 2 Number 1 picks ever to date.

Saints fans take Roo
Hawks fans take Hodge

Neutrals would love either.

On the back of his team's achievements?

Seems to be good enough for Hawk posters. Same goes on the leadership front, with Kernahan being arguably a better captain over his career. But Sticks is also a 5 time All Australian in a golden age of forwards and sits 15th on the league's all-time goal kicking record, despite spending a chunk of his career at CHF and not playing a game in this league until 23yo. Throw in his SANFL record and not rating him starts to look even stranger.

I'd take Riewoldt.

Geez its tough....You'd pick the KPP every time.

But Hodge has a finals record to be envied and has performed in the big games that have mattered. Riewoldt would kill to have Hodges finals record.
