Expansion Why AFL fails miserably in Queensland

Remove this Banner Ad

I've been a member of the Lions for 5 years. I talk to the same people who sit within say 3 to 4 rows every year. And I have asked every one where they are from originally etc. Out of about 100 people I talk to ill admit about 70 are expat from afl regions and about 30 percent started watching after being bought up on RL or Union. The super league war did it for me. I was a playing member of a small country RL club. The NRL representative made a big song and dance about a visit and gave us a cheque for 50 bucks. We all laughed in his face and told him to keep it... I started watching AFL on the telly after that casually. As I lived in NSW I sought of followed Sydney. Moved to Brisbane in 99. Six years ago I started a job that had a corporate box. First AFL game live I was hooked. Went to 4/5 games that year via company. Next year I became a member and have been ever since.

The AFL is failing the game and all most posters wish to do is take potshots at me for being a whinger etc....

My argument is simply that you can put figures to support pretty much any position you wish to take. Thus, I use observation and experience...things that mean something to the scientific community as a STARTING POINT for further research - most of you just swallow down whatever press release hits the interwebz.

Thank god Newton sat under trees and watched stuff happen....

I love the perception, backed by figures, that assert things are going well in the expansion areas on a junior level participation.

In 10 minutes searching, I have found published academic articles indicating the reverse. (Lies, damn lies, and statistics, remember)

but surely, SURELY, the fact that it's almost 30 years after the formation of the Brisbane Bears and we couldn't field a starting 11 of Queenslanders, never mind a 22, of AFL standard, demonstrates how little impact your efforts have had.

And how many of those players played concurrently? In first team selections, for extended periods....

*edit* - and that's a half a list there....cool, it's a start perhaps. But serves merely to highlight the point - in 30 years, we can field 22 players maybe...

Thats looking like a good team.

Anyone saw the Brisbane bears transformation from 1987-1996? 1st 4-6 years they struggled and were at the Gold coast struggling to get 6-8,000 people a game. Then Robert Walls came over in the early 1990s. By 1995 the lions were getting 10-15,000 a game and they made the finals. In 1996, they made a Prelim and were selling out games at the Gabba when it only held 23,000 seats.

That is an interesting point.

I went to have a look at what Freo got when they first entered the competion. What the f*** was in the water over their during their first years?

What club drafts someone with 7 then delists him in the same preseason?

we had a crap board. Our club has been well run in the last 8 years

No doubt.

However I think the AFL would now step in and prevent a new franchise from doing what they allowed you to do.

When Freo eventually do win a flag it's probably going to be more real than those handed talent in spades.

All of them (some are injured). There are far more Queenslanders on AFL lists than that.

Have I exposed your troll?

Nope, read my edit :)

See, I don't care to change your mind and you can't change mine either. I'm just expressing a position you'd rather not consider.

This is what I call 'moving the goal posts (no cross bar)':

There is probably a full list-worth of Queenslanders on AFL lists (40-odd). I just gave you a 25 who are consistent senior selections or better.

It is why I think organising State of Origin is so important. People from Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia might not get it but State of Origin would be so good for the AFL in Queensland and New South Wales. There is a perception that AFL is a Victorian game and State of Origin between NSW and QLD with a lot of top quality AFL players involved would do much to destroy that myth.

Yep - just let me know what WE could have offered to them all in preference to what where they ended up...

Some of those chaps, without doing any research, hadn't lived in Brisbane for years. Which, as I stated, highlights the point at issue. Sidestepping? Moving the goalposts? Nope - simply reinforcing the view that the city/state/club/whatever doesn't, within it's own nursery, have the capacity to develop AFL standard footballers.

Agreed. I am all for a State of Origin competition run over one weekend every three to four years, with six or seven separate teams - with the winners moving up a tier for next time, and the losers moving down.

It would really give an impression of being the national game having at least 5 states all in a State of Origin competition.

Yep. We can have QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, WA and TAS, sorted into 2 groups of 3 playing a 'tri series' format. The winner of each group then plays each other in a final. Groups can be randomly drawn each year. Stick it right up to the NRL which only has a 2 state SoO.

Would be awesome.

I think that's your problem.

My problem? Hell no - it's the AFL's problem

Don't make me research. You will lose, horribly.

I was hoping for a more fullsome account of SoO of those players - the point at issue is how many of these Queenslanders go on to AFL standard vs how many are relocated families.

I realise we are casting forward - are you happy to re-visit this in 10 years?

Seems about the same size as the Brisbane junior rugby union

No idea, probably no one will know, just as we will never know how many South African and Kiwi immigrants fill the rugby union junior ranks, how many kids of PI heritage fill the Rugby League junior ranks and how many kids of English/European/South American migrants fill the junior soccer ranks.

What we do know, is claims of around 50% of of Penrith and Parramatta junior rugby leagues being PI's, ( several years ago) whether they are born here or O/S no one probably knows.

It is what it is.
