AFL Club
Adelaide
Current board member and former club champion Mark Ricciuto is a majority owner in the Alma Tavern with players Taylor Walker and Rory Sloane.

Former board member and President of the AHA (Australian Hotel Association) Peter Hurley owns a number of establishments in Adelaide. 10 hotels in fact known as the Hurley Group.

So, that suggests to me the club can make money on this investment or why would these people continue to invest in this type of business. I'm also lead to believe the club is not under the control of the SANFL - so any permission fropm them is not needed any more.

The cynic in me could suggest the 2 board members have a financial conflict of interest and they are not activally encouraging them to head in this branding direction.

After 25 years, the club needs somewhere supporters and members of the Adelaide Crows can call their own and go to grab a meal, drink or to simply socialise with friends. I'm still very perplexed as to why this is not on the clubs agenda.

*please don't make this a pokies or not discussion as that comes back to personal choice and I don't belibve the club should be held to account for each and ever members own choice. The individual can make that choice as these machines are very easily accessible and not part of this discussion.

The only thing I want to say about the pokies, is that it is needed for the financial success of the pub. Reduce pub prices on beer and food by enabling revenue from Pokies (and as Alex99 pointed out....I am neither for or against pokies...it is what it is).

It is a very good point though Alex. Many AFL clubs own a pub for the above reasons. It would be nice to go to a place after the game knowing that the beer and food is contributing to the success of the club. More importantly there is a fair chance that Powa supporters would refuse to enter. Win/win ;)

The ALMA clearly tries to market itself as a crows pub, probably wouldn't be a great economic move for Roo to try create a real crows pub.

Although pubs don't earn huge amounts of money, they require a lot of management. A large pub in the city will spend millions to make thousands.

Any pub that is big enough and in a convenient location to cater for a match day crowd would cost a fortune in rent.

The Ideal situation would be to create a massive venue that overlooks the training oval/sanfl home ground. A massive building that houses all the clubs offices and indoor training facilities downstairs with pokies, restaurants and multiple themed bars upstairs. Like Southport sharks on the gold coast, or Cazalys in cairns. AAMI stadium would be the obvious location but if they could somehow position themselves near Adelaide Uni they would have a year-round supply of customers.

It's also about branding, marketing and club promotions.

Just having the brand being represented in the city, keeps the club on people mind.

The location must be right, the cuisine must be a popular type a large proportion of the demographic will eat and kid and teen friendly. Then if they can turn it into a night club Friday, Saturday and Sunday night - it can turn into a very nice money spinner.

But you are not going to create an environment specifically just to cater to 1 day a week. That would be economic suicide.

You need to develop a business plan to make a profit. That is the important part, not being able to fit someone in.

They can then take bookings for match day (if they wish) and know they will have a very steady stream of people during the week. Rather than be busy match day and then dead empty every other day of the week. A seating of about 200 would be sufficient rather than a venue that can hold 10,000 one day 11 times a week.

If we do buy a pub it would need to be an established cbd venue IMO. Something that is ran by the club, but not necessarily heavily themed as our pub. Would love to have lunch on a weekday knowing what I spend goes to our club.

Up untiil recently I was all for us gaining a licenced facility.

However with the rate of pubs closing down lately, I am unsure now. Collingwood lost a fair amount of coin, but could absorb it. The Prince of Wales Hotel pretty much doomed the Port Magpies to a hostile takeover by the Power.

If it was a CBD based pub I would love to see them partner with Coopers to make an Ale house, but the AFC branding would need to be minimal if anything, otherwise it would be tacky.
I know the Adelaide Rowing Club has hosted a few prematch functions. An ambitious idea would be to build on that location and form a joint venture with them to build a pub. The main plan for that precinct is to have cafes and licenced venues along the Torrens built within the next ten years. We could get in early.

How can it possibly be that every SANFL club have one and we still don't?

Grand Central in Elizabeth is awesome. WWT have a location on Port Road and North Adealaide have a Grand North and they can make them work with less than 10,000 members. Yet, we have 60,000 and have no established location.

Next time we have a session with Fagan this should be asked.

The southport sharks complex is fantastic. Recently visited it and couldnt believe how big it was. It was like one of those big rsl clubs in nsw. Our club would definitely benefit from having something similar. The problem is we dont have a suitable location.

IMO - the ideal location would be the Adelaide casino renovation or gain a footprint in the new Sheraton hotel that has been proposed to be built on O'connel Street.

Casino site
Sheraton site (O'connel Street)
Stage 2 of the Adelaide Convention Centre upgrade
The Stag (but thats finished now)
The Archer (I believe this is for sale or lease)

The problem I see with us owning a venue in the cbd is that it would be noones "local". We don't represent a suburb, we represent a state. Therein lies the issue.

I'd much rather see us partner up with an existing venue and have Crows events. One off nights, match day events etc. That way we don't carry the operational cost, but the venue gets the benefit of having a direct link to us.

Having a " home pub" is a good idea in principle, I'm just not sure owning one is the answer.

I don't think the Archer is for sale and not sure Woolies would give up their lease but I can check.

Oxford is under new management.

Then we don't 'own' the licence or hotel establishment - we sell the club branding to a private investor or consortium or investors and gain royalties every year. We sign a very long contract and gain branding royalties.

No risk, all rewards.

That must have been it. I knew one of them was in the process of changing hands.

If it is a good pub it will make money regardless of an attachment to our club or representing an area.

I personally want the venue from a commercial point of view.

That is the key and I think that is where the club went wrong with the retail store. They just believed it would work and could phone it in. The location was all wrong.

Yep, that's the plan I see as being more appropriate.

Or a decent beer even ;)

Coopers is actually a very popular beer outside SA, in SA it's just boring old coopers, but outside it's almost viewed as a premium beer, a CBD Coopers pub would be hugely popular with visiting interstaters. It's probably Australia's favourite South Aussie, the AFL probably wouldn't allow them to be a sponsor but if I was Fagan I would be doing everything I could to have the club associated with their brand.
