Well friends due to the imminent arrival of Elite Dangerous - a game I have been hoping will come out for YEARS I bought a new computer to run it as my old faithful is only a 2.1 quad core with a fairly old gaming video card so bought a new 3.8 quad core box with a nice chunky new 3d video gaming card and luverly chunky hard drive etc.

All good.

Unfortunately I opted for Windows 8

Email access is an utter trainwreck

Skype will not run in desktop mode and requires a full screen window

Now back on my old faithful running windows 7 whilst I save up to install windows 7 on the new rig.

Those of you who love to have your various email and messenger type accounts running whilst doing other stuff such as word etc. . . . STEER WELL CLEAR OF WINDOWS 8 until Microsoft admits to itself (never admit it to the public) that they have made and absolute and utter trainwreck of a new O.S. (shades of Vista shudder) and get off their corporate arses and fix the bloody thing to run as it should have when it was released.

Microsoft have admitted window 8 is crap. Windows 9 has been announced for 2015.

You can request a windows 7 downgrade from Microsoft if you hate 8 that much. I'm thinking of doing the same to my laptop that came with 8.

I also can't wait till Elite comes out. Joined the Kickstart soon after I heard about it.

Thanks for great info.

Do you know how I can request? Is there a site / link or do I have to ring?

Microsoft have had a bad last 18 months really with the Surface Pro disaster and Windows 8, an OS they tried to create that would work equally as well on your Phone, tablet, hybrid (surface pro) or PC.

Great to see really, for once that goliath of an organisation will actually have to put some thinking into it's design and production before just releasing the next version and assuming everyone will just gulp it up even though it's utter s**t.

Oh, and there's still those that believe that the hybrid tablet (basically a laptop with a click off tablet) is the future, and it may well be but I doubt Microsoft are the ones that are going to perfect it.

Not sure of the process, a friend did it. I haven't got around to it yet (time hasn't allowed it).
My friend complained about W8 to micro soft and was given a key to downgrade.
Some laptops come with a downgrade key. I think my laptop came with a downgrade key.

Did a couple of searches and found that apparently its only Windows 8 pro that they are offering the downgrade to, alas I have standard windows 8 :(

Why is XP the Best? I know a lot of people still use XP
XP has a very light 'footprint' Dave - by that I mean it takes up relatively few system resources, or perhaps to make it simpler, it uses less ram memory and requires less oomph to run, leaving much more for games and other applications.

Windows 8 by comparison is a two layer O.S. designed to try and cover both tablets and P.C's and ends up doing neither well at all.

Very true about XP also a lot of programs ran better with XP and you could get under the hood and make your own modifications if you knew what you were doing. For example making it load and close faster. Unfortunately Win7 has too many restrictions and you can't do much with it if you want to try something different but still way better than 8..

Although Apple is not doing much better with their upgrades, I am having problems with wi-fi on my ipad since last upgrade.

Also majority of Programs that come out still can still be run on XP:thumbsu:

Well Maggie the really horrid part of 8 is their so-called mail 'Tile' application. To run your email app you need to synch it with this email app. Ok says I so I synched my hotmail account (Microsoft application remember ) and it gets up and running a couple of days later 8 does an upgrade on itself and no longer recognizes my hotmail (Microsoft application :mad:) so I seek advice online and am told to re - synch it. After about 20 attempts it dawns on me that libelious and profane observations on the a certain Bill Gates, his antecedents and progeny are having no effect on said nefarious application so I went in search of further enlightenment online.

You have no idea how many numbwits, halfwits, lackwits and simple Microsoft apolgists there are out there masquerading as real, honest to goodness help sites  After a solid week of part time surfing and searching I finally find someone who has two brain cells to rub together to ignite an idea and learn that you can get your hotmail account to remain stable and recognized on 8 IF you run it through Outlook

I also have a yahoo and a gmail account, neither of which are yet working on 8, apparently because they are a catagory POP1 server and all three are of course POP1 servers - just the most popular and well used server classification on the planet, which Microsoftbrain uses for their own @%@#$@^hotmail server but which &%&^%&*% Windows 8 can't handle :mad::mad:

And PLEASE don't mention how 8 maims Skype in my hearing :mad::mad::mad:

I hear you. Do you have the disks or is everything pre-installed? Maybe do a complete re-instal with an education version of Win7 (cheaper). This is what I buy when buying their products. Went to buy a new laptop and almost all have 8 on it, so decided to stick with this old one for the time being.
XP was the best and if I could get into 7 it would be okay. The restricted access is rubbish. Am having so much trouble networking with 7, I never to to Microsoft for answers, just to forums. My favourite is Tech Republic most of the people on this site are IT specialists and can teach Microsoft, Whirlpool is not bad and also The Bleeding Edge.
I use Gmail for most of my emails and is okay with 7 so thank you will not be upgrading to 8.

I had an issue some years ago when I had a computer (two years old) that crashed (hard drive) and when I went to re-instal XP (had a disk) rang for a verification number and said that I couldn't use it as was for the old computer so had to pay for new licence as it was an OE and licenced to the old computer.

Maggie I do have the disks etc., tried reinstall from a virginally sanitised hard drive, did all the drivers, directx, Flash, 7 zip (win 8 periodically trips 7 zip up too ) and got it up to same level as first installation and the problems remain.

Microsoft openly admit now that 8 is a steaming pile of and offer free downgrades to win 7 pro for users of win 8 pro, unfortunately I bought the standard win 8 so left out in the cold by a corporation so large its basically above the law.

This is what happens when you allow a corporate shark to eat up its competitors, too little competition in an area which is absolutely vital to worldwide infrastructure. So they do as they like and the little guy gets it in the neck.

I'll follow your advice in both checking out Tech Republic, Whirlpool and Bleeding edge and looking for a copy of win 7 Educational.

Correct on win xp, my son still uses it where possible for gaming because of its many advantages over both 7 and 8 - especially for system intensive gaming.

As for your experience with Microsoft in ringing for a verification number, I'm not surprised having heard similar stories a number of times - too big and to powerful to give a stuff about anyone other than their corporate customers - which is why its only win 8 pro users getting free downgrade option.

Can't swap my win 7 drive over into the new machine as it belongs to the old machine which was a hand me down (still very powerful at the time) from son who for his profession needs bleeding edge upgrades every 6 - 9 months. Unfortunately he forgot to give me the disk or numbers before he left for O/S posting recently.

Another example of "Big Corporations" not caring about "working families".
Whether we like to admit it or not Cap we live in just as much a class riddled society as old England was, but now the classes are defined by money and power. One buys the other and if you have enough of both you can do what you like.

The best quote I have ever read regarding our new class 'reality' was from an American left wing broadsheet (or what they class as left wing anyway )

A recently settled refugee immigrant who had finally qualified for landing rights during an interview said something very close to the following. . .

"Yes I am loving America and your wonderful free enterprise, here I can be free - or at least as free as I can afford to be."

It's a stunning indictment of a country who once proudly proclaimed . .

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door".

Such are the new realities of living in a Merchant's paradise :(

Well we are rolling it out at work for start of March. Sounds like we are going to be busy
Fingers crossed for you Pricey, hopefully it's Win 8 Pro and you can get some meaningful backup from MS. As a business entity you are more likely to get assistance, but my info is that they are rushing out Win 9 in 2015 - which (a) Tells you how crap Win 8 is and (b) Makes me wonder if there is any possible way Win 9 can be anything but a bigger steaming pile of . . . . being rushed forward with such short development time.

Who do they have as software development chief there??? Clyde??? Someone should tell Clint to stop his monkey to stop messing with s**t

Argh! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahah!

ARRRGHH! Hahah Hah Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaah

Windows 8 is sooooo s**t we just hired a guy to get the steaming turd off our brand new
system ans put windows 7 on instead, until we can get enough copies of windows XP.

Pimple boy has had to have his minions replace the old style workspace and toolbars as the windows 8 farce has been shredded by users.
If only Windows users were smart enough to spell....class action?

PE sorry you had the same sort of experience, the big prob with Microsoft is they are virtually above the law if the full might of the American government can't defeat them in the governments own couts.

This is what happens when you allow 1 mega corporation to take over virtually all of the market share which the world economy relies heavily upon.

What are you suing MS for? If you don't like Win 8, don't buy it? No one held a gun to your head and forced you to buy Win 8? And if you neglected to do your research, then caveat emptor.

And if you think customers can't make a difference, remember, Nokia was once the Microsoft of phones. If you stop buying the product, instead of just complaining, Microsoft will be forced to change or go out of business.

I have not brought it and not planning too. I would ask for Windows 7/XP for a New Computer and not Windows 8

Oh dear if that isn't the most simplistic response possible then let me out of here.

What of those without tech savvy?

Buying a new O.S. is one of the most fraught practices you might engage in, the details of bugs and outright stupidity wrought by so-called programmers are simply never released to the general media. Those of us without the knowledge to search for information in the right places are at the mercy of the manufacturer.

Only a small percentage of the older population would have any idea what to to look for.

If you don't like it don't buy it?????

Some people just have no idea.
