Here's an idea from left field, get the current teams right before any more are added in.
How can we talk of expansion when some of the current clubs have poor crowds/members?
1. Take the finals back to top 4 only. More than half the league in the finals is ridiculous.
2. Keep the Gold Coast, let it get propped up by the FFA and wait for someone with half a brain to buy it. They already have a core group of support, no point just throwing all that away because of one fool. Just embrace the community there and get them involved instead of screwing them over like Palmer did and the club may flourish.
3. Push hard for free to air coverage. Anyway, anyhow. Doesn't have to be every match but get something on FTA. This is critical. It might be a short term loss, but it will create more interest in the game than Pay TV ever can. Get it on the TV so that your average Jack and Jill can watch a game, have it on in the background and create an interest. It'l get more sponsors and interest involved.
4. Run the comp with 10 teams, with a top 4, get some matches on free to air, and engage the community. Keep it like this for a while, until clubs are established and thriving. Don't even mention the word expansion. Build some excitement for a new club, the way it works now people expect a new franchise to fail.
5. A-league is currently a joke. Get some respect back by running it correctly for a while. Revisit in 5 years.
