Both those towns are pretty good. I lived in Bendigo for a bit as a kid. Was a nice place to spend a couple of years growing up.

Forget working class suburbs with their handful of drug addicts and occasional car theft.

Rape and domestic assault endemic, especially for underage girls, alcoholism and unemployment rife, ridiculously high % of the population have been arrested/been to gaol, non-locals too scared to go there for work.

Surprised Port Augusta hasn't been mentioned yet, now that is what you call a shithole! Most of the towns in the Pilbara region also look pretty grim.

My dad grew up in Bendigo and summarised it very simply as: "Don't turn left at the roundabout!".

Basically, any suburb containing the word "Hawk" or "Gully" (apart from Spring Gully) = crap.

Well those two suburbs are considered lower socio-economic area's
They are largely made up of housing commission properties.
Has it's share of unemployment, drug problems and crime.

Plenty of terrible places with very little population around Australia.

My vote for worst town with a reasonable population is West Wyalong, NSW.

Seemed like it had a eery whole town depression and the locals seemed to hate outsiders, and have shitty attitudes.

When I was a kid on a road trip up to Queensland I remember stopping at Narribri, NSW. I remember thinking it was aweful and my Mum was pissed at my Dad for making us stay the night. I was only 8 though. Might not have been as bad as I believed.
