Your best 22 in 2015

Remove this Banner Ad

That's a good side and is pretty close to what I'd select as a best 22 for Essendon. However Winderlich has been spending a lot of time down back at training and I suspect that the club wants to play one of Ambrose, Langford or Edwards as a 3rd marking target.

Ambrose isn't far away from best 22 IMO. If Winderlich goes back than I see him playing that Winderlich FP role.

Might be an opportunity to add him in at the expense of Gleeson

Geelong

FULL BACKS:
Jared Rivers ~ Tom Lonergan ~ Corey Enright
HALF BACKS: Andrew Mackie ~ Harry Taylor ~ James Kelly

The biggest issue I see with this back line is that it is aging and needs regeneration in terms of age. All very experienced defenders who bring versatility to the defensive game. The biggest positional change during the year could be Jed Bews onto a BF/ BP and James Kelly moves to the bench.

You can;t fault the experience and big game qualities in the back line but.

MIDFIELDERS: Mitch Duncan ~ Joel Selwood ~ Josh Caddy
FOLLOWERS: Hamish McIntosh ~ Steve Johnson ~ Cameron Guthrie (tagger)

Solid midfield here with good experience. Guthrie's a flexible tagger, can play as a small defender or run with midfielder. Important cog in the team as an effective shut down player.

Caddy is a player that if given an injury free year could become a midfielder more recognised outside the Cats and recognised in the competition in general. I like the way he plays and adds some extra hardness in the midfield to support Joel Selwood.

HALF FORWARDS: Jimmy Bartel ~ Mitch Clark ~ Matthew Stokes
FULL FORWARDS: Steven Motlop ~ Tom Hawkins ~ Jordan Murdoch

Forward line finishes off a solid all round with a lot of experience. Injury permitting, Jordan Murdoch is a player that is ready to have a greater impact further up the field as part of the midfield rotations. Prototype midfielder in today's game but is strong inside 50 as well.

Mitch Clark is the biggest addition to the Cats. His past issues have been well and truly discussed and documented but without knowing the finer details of his issues and recovery I think the change will do him and the Cats well. The Cats couldn't find a regular, consistent CHF during season 2014 after the move of Podsiadly to Adelaide. It's an important position in today's game and with Hawkins they could prove to be a very powerful tall forward combination.

INTERCHANGE: Jed Bews ~ George Horlin - Smith ~ Mark Blicavs
SUB: Darcy Lang

Bews is part of that back line regeneration at Geelong as a smaller defender who will be a part of the succession plan post Enright and Kelly. Injury permitting should be a regular best 22 working with Enright and Kelly.

Blicavs versatility is a key. For a ruckman his endurance makes him stand out. May be trialled down back during the NAB series as part of a succession plan to Lonergan, Rivers and Taylor. During the season I see him as a regular second ruckman but.

Lang is the greatest beneficiary of Travis Varcoe and Allen Christensen no longer being at Geelong. 2013 draftee and debuted during 2014 his best asset is that speed that Christen and Varcoe had and his ability to win the ball

Gold Coast

FULL BACKS:
Clay Cameron ~ Steven May ~ Kade Kolodjashnij
HALF BACKS: Nick Malceski ~ Rory Thompson ~ Trent McKenzie

Malceski is obviously a big inclusion to the Suns back half. Can be argued that with him, Koldjashnij and McKenzie that maybe they are one tight playing defender short. This is where Lemmens enters in as a shut down smaller defender.

I've added Clay Cameron because I think they need a regular third tall down back. Debuted in 2014 and was efficient in defence which a real defence first, attack second mentality. Definite chop out option for May and Thompson.

MIDFIELDERS: Mitch Hallahan ~ Gary Ablett ~ Jarrod Harbrow
FOLLOWERS: Tom Nicholls/ Zac Smith ~ David Swallow ~ Dion Prestia

Mitch Hallahan is the main midfield addition to the Suns. Hard bodied midfielder to compliment the
outside pace and skill that they have in the midfield. If he can have an injury free season I see him playing regularly and being one of the trade recruits of the year.

The battle of who gets the first role between Nicholls and Smith should be interesting and creates a great healthy competition for selection.

HALF FORWARDS: Jaeger O'Meara ~ Tom Lynch ~ Harley Bennell
FULL FORWARDS: Charlie Dixon ~ Sam Day ~ Brandon Matera

O'Meara and Bennell arguably have the talent to be first choice midfielders but adding their speed, class and skill along with Jack Martin to a second string midfield is a pretty big carrot to dangle as well.

INTERCHANGE: Jack Martin ~ Danny Stanley ~ Sean Lemmens
SUB: Michael Rischitelli

Rischitelli is my nominated SUB. Doesn't mean I think he is the 22nd selected player but. I just feel longer term it is more beneficial to start Mitch Hallahan on the park and having someone with Rischitelli's experience and composure among younger, inexperienced team mates will be great for the Suns.

FULL BACKS:
Joel Patfull ~ Tim Mohr ~ Adam Kennedy
HALF BACKS: Heath Shaw ~ Phil Davis ~ Curtly Hampton

The availability of Tim Mohr is very important for the Giants. Allows Joel Patfull to play that third tall defender role that he did so well at Brisbane. As an undersized KPF he fights hard but would be monstered by the bigger forwards.

MIDFIELDERS:
Stephen Coniglio ~ Adam Treloar ~ Dylan Shiel
FOLLOWERS: Shane Mumford ~ Ryan Griffen ~ Callan Ward

Ryan Griffen is a great addition to that Giants midfield especially if he is over his back issues. Ws a dominant midfield in NAB week 2 against the Suns and will play a great foil role for the other taller midfielder Ward.

HALF FORWARDS: Lachie Whitfield ~ Adam Tomlinson ~ Will Hoskin - Elliott
FULL FORWARDS: Devon Smith ~ Jeremy Cameron ~ Rory Lobb

Youthful forward line without a real experienced AFL player like the other lines have in Shaw Patfull, Davis, Griffen, Ward and Mumford. What they lack in experience they make up for in X factor but.

I've picked Lobb to play as a second ruck but that third tall forward spot is well and truly up for grabs. If Cam McCarthy has a good finish to the NAB series I would say he's in the mix for an early debut. Raw talent.

INTERCHANGE: Toby Greene ~ Tom Scully ~ Josh Kelly
SUB: Jarrod Pickett

Pickett's an ideal SUB i think. Good inside and outside, very quick and hard to catch, loves to take the game on and has senior experience at WAFL level.

I have Robinson starting because without Hanley more tagging attention will be given to Beams and Rockliff. So he would be there to rough up the tagger.

Tim Mohr is likely to be injured for most of the year.

Slide Patfull to fullback, drop WTF Curtley for Aidan Corr and move him into the back pocket.

Lachie Whitfield gets the loose role on the HBF, and we push Tomlinson into the big winger role on the flank, pull Cameron up to CHF and play McCarthy at full forward. I also prefer Phillips as the backup ruck, but I can see why someone would pick Lobb (or Downie).

Robinson is mediocre at best. Golby is much better.
Robinson is not mediocre when given the right role. Had a role change after the 2011 season and never look the same player (only had patches of good form).

Golby is quite possibly the worst kick at the Lions. Even the boys give him crap for it as a joke. He was OK under Voss, but massively disappointing in the first season under Leppa. Woeful at times.

Interesting you say that RE: Mohr because most recently I've heard differently unless he has had an injury relapse since yesterday.

My initial thoughts were like yours that he would be gone for most of the season, but after looking at the updated club injury lists last week I saw that Mohr was only two weeks away which persuaded my selection over Haynes. He's looking to be for for R1 according to afl.com

Noticed that there was no Andrew Walker with KJ in the back pocket. Was Walker deliberately missed or mainly due to injury concerns?
