This week in Adelaide, the six sides: (ACT/NSW combined side), QLD, SA (+3 NT Girls), Victoria, WA and Vic Development (+ some Tassie girls) will play to determine who will be this year's champion.

No doubt Victoria will be undefeated but the challenge of knocking them off is always enjoyable.

From the first centre ruck tap it was obvious that the Vics wanted to leave no doubt in everyone's mind that they were focused on winning three in a row. The SA team were rattled from the first and did not get into their usual attacking style of play. The more experienced Vics were very disciplined in their approach sticking to game tactics, running hard and supporting each other.


First quarter Vics had 4 goals on the board before SA had penetrated their forward 50. Midfielders Karyk and Blackburn were dominating, pushing Vics forward. During the second quarter the Vics piled on another three goals despite more pressure being applied by the SA defence. Shannon Ponter (SA) tried hard to get her team moving but they would be repelled once they made it to the centre. Victoria continued their dominance allowing SA one scoring shot for the game which resulted in a goal.

Queensland Sunfire burst out of the centre and quickly put a score on the board. For the next half, the contest was fierce and an arm wrestle between the midfields with neither team able to get flow into their forward 50. Half time scores were Qld 2.2 (14) to Team WA 1.1 (7).


Team WA must have received a rev up from coach Michelle Harris during half time because they scored two quick goals in the first minutes of the third quarter. The Black Ducks racked up three times more inside 50s than the Sunfires but could not take advantage due to the resolute defence from the Queensland backline. The final quarter was played mainly in Queensland's forward line. WA could not get the ball past their half back line and when they finally did Sabrina Traub gained front position to bullock the ball in for a goal. Qld could not get ahead but can be buoyed by their crisp ball handling and running in numbers.

The last quarter was the difference between the two teams. AFL Vic Dev kicked two quick goals in the dying minutes of the quarter to snatch a hard-won victory. NSWACT have finished 6th at the previous two U18 Youth Girls National Championships but today's game showed they have improved markedly. In what was a very entertaining game to finish the first day’s play of the U18 Yough Girls National Championships, non-traditional football state NSWACT played a free flowing, vigorous game against AFL Victoria Development.


In past Champs these two teams have played off for 5th and 6th but their calibre of play was so high that if the other teams take either team for granted they will do so at their peril. Tasmanian Maddison Smith is able to play for AFL Vic Dev until such time as Tasmania can field their own U18s team. She was dominant in the midfield in particular continually driving her team forward. Second timer Gabbie Pound was a hard worker for NSWACT going in hard in packs to serve the ball out to her onballers.

Quite a physical game. A few hits and tackles that might have been reportable in the AFL didnt even get frees. Nasty sling tackle at 14.00. A late and high shirtfront at 23.20 and your basic forearm to the head at 24.00, and thats just the first quarter.

Comparing the quality to U18 boys is interesting. While the quality is quite a bit lower than the boys, it is quite a bit higher than most people who havent seen girls play would expect.

The difference in quality is also likely to be due to a number of factors other than, they are girls.

1. Much smaller pool of players to select a state squad from. Means players that are good in a couple of areas but poor in others may get a game on the basis of their strengths, where boys probably wouldnt because of their weaknesses. eg saw a few girls with poor kicks, but they were big and quick and hard at it.
2. Because of more limited availalbility of girls teams and leagues, many of these girls will have played far fewer games than their boy equivalents at the same age.
3. Much more variable ages. Commentators mention a queensland girl in her 3rd championships, and she is still only 16.

Much of this will naturally fix itself as the women game grows

Vics look quite good. Marking a feature of the game I thought.
Had a fight in the background. Push and shove starts in background at 1.01.55 and when the camera goes past again at 1.02.01 it has turned into a ground battle (for those who thought the girls took it easy):)

Looked further into the vid. Game stapped for about 10 min while players were counted. Seems each team had a player sent off, presumably the fighters, but the Vics replaced their player, so it was 17 v 18 for a while. Typical dirty Vic stunt:) They even got away with it, should have had their score wiped.

Day 2 results, this is pretty much the make or break day for most teams in the competition or as they say in Golf - "Moving Day". Getting defeated means the teams chances to make the Big Grand Final playing at AAMI Stadium after the Port Power vs North Melbourne Kangaroos is virtually nil.

In the first game

After their drubbing at the hands of Victoria on the first day of the U18 AFL Youth Girls National Championships in Adelaide, it would have been easy for the SA players to pack in the competition. Instead they gave AFL Vic Development a football lesson in team work and one percenters.
A feature of the SA game was their blocking allowing a ball carrier to break through the lines and surge into SA’s forward 50.


SA had six goals on the board in quick succession before Vic Dev could rally and get into some semblance of cohesive ball movement.
Caitlin Swanson and NT Thunder player, Shannon Ponter were in fine form for SA while Tassie import, Maddie Smith for Development again worked hard in the packs. The brilliant Autumn sunshine allowed for crisp ball handling and some outstanding overhead marking.

Finally VIC get taken to the edge of the precipice!

The current title holders were outscored in the second half by a determined Team WA in the second match of day 2 of the U18 Youth Girls National Championships in Adelaide. However, Victoria are a force to be reckoned with. A torrid first quarter full of brutal tackles from WA and good transition into their forward line by Victoria were outstanding features.


A vocal crowd spurred on the umpires to reward the tackling from WA and were appreciative of the wonderful marking and long kicking ability of the Vics. In particular Michaela Perceval repelled numerous WA attacks and ran well off the half back to provide her onballers with plenty of the ball.
WA found no reward, however, as the Vics piled on four goals in their first half keeping Team WA scoreless.


A different picture emerged after the long break. Through brilliant running ruck work of Emma Swanson, WA started to gain the ascendancy in the middle. Raking long kicks to the WA forwards produced two quick goals. Victoria's captain, Madeline Keryk was inspirational thwarting many WA moves into their 50.


By the end of the game, WA had clawed their way back to come away with a respectable 17 point defeat. If the two teams make it to the Grand Final it should be a cracking game!

After a game that eluded them because they ran out of legs on Tuesday, Queensland made sure they were full of running when they outplayed a plucky NSW/ACT. In the first match of Day 2 of the U18 AFL Youth Girl National Championships, Queensland burst out of the centre square to peg a quick opening goal through hard work by Megan Hunt.


Clean ball handling and strong running was the feature of their game for all four quarters. Despite strong overhead marking and numerous attempts to push into their forward line NSW/ACT could not convert. The longer the game went the NSW/ACT girls fell prey to some excellent bumps from the opposition and at times friendly fire that resulted in some injuries to key players. Queensland’s Caitlin Collins played out of her skin driving her team forward frequently and was well supported by Emily Bates and Megan Hunt.

Looking forward

ACT/NSW face undefeated Victoria, WA take on Vic Development and SA take on QLD.


My predictions for Saturday is Vic vs WA in the Grand Final, SA vs QLD for 3rd place and the Vic Development vs ACT/NSW for 5th and 6th spot.

Centre ruck tap, onballer gathers, burst to centre half forward, goal – this was the game plan implemented by a ruthless Vic team on the last day before the Grand Final in the U18 AFL Youth Girls Championships against a hapless NSW/ACT.


Boasting more experience, strength, understanding of the game and skill, the Vics displayed a brand of football that NSW/ACT could only aspire to.
The large, lushly surfaced SANFL grounds and the more physical nature of the games played have made the Champs a challenging week for the combined team.


Despite the challenges, the team have kept their heads held high and must surely have been in awe of the Vic's skills. When they held front position, the Vics leapt over the top to take spectacular marks. When NSW/ACT tried to run free of a pack, the Vics provided a powerful tackle and the ball spilled free only to be swept up by a big V player holding front and centre.
It was a crushing victory and showcased the depth of football skills and discipline the Vics implement. Deservedly, Vics will finish on top spot and go undefeated into the Grand Final, while NSWACT will play off for 5th and 6th position.

After slow starts in their first two games at the U18 AFL Youth Girls Championships, Team WA were focused on booting a huge score in their third game to build a much needed percentage in order to gain a Grand Final berth. With four teams sitting on the same points, the Grand Finalists will come down to which team has the greater percentage.


Although WA had an outstanding second half against the Vics in their last game to go down by only 17 points, they needed to keep AFLVic Development scoreless. Emma Swanson (WA) was full of run and Chloe Taylor worked hard in defence. Kira Phillips made sure her leads were honoured and kicked straight seven times. However, Vic Dev snuck in two goals in the last quarter so it will be the outcome of the SA v Qld game that will determine which team will face Victoria in tomorrow's Grand Final at AAMI Stadium.

Qld Makes U18 Youth Girls Grand Final

After an exciting, closely fought final match of the U18 Youth Girls National Championships, Queensland prevailed over a determined South Australia, and kicked enough points to land themselves a spot in the Grand Final.
WA, who looked the likely Grand Final contender, was pipped at the post by having just five more points kicked against them than Queensland.

Traditional rivals for fifth and sixth placings at the last day of play at the U18 Youth Girls National Championships provided a good display in soggy conditions.

Adelaide had served up superb Autumn days for the first three days of the Champs but the morning play-off teams were faced with fog and wet conditions.

However, this didn’t dampen their enthusiasm for the contest.

AFL Vic Development opened their account with a quick goal after some fine ruck work from the centre.

The rest of the first quarter was a contest between the 50s with both teams' half back lines forming solid defences.

Both teams found the showery conditions trying in terms of clean possessions and were unable to kick the ball over the same distances they had in dry weather.

Nevertheless, dogged work from on-ballers Gabby Pound and Rachel Friend allowed NSW/ACT to keep the ball in their half for their first goal.

Although NSW/ACT dominated play in the third quarter and kept the opposition scoreless they were unable to get value for their efforts.

Maddison Smith (Tassie recruit) and Deanna Berry thrived in the wet and provided plenty of drive for Victoria in the final term. They helped put the result beyond doubt when a team mate kicked their fifth goal.

The two teams most disappointed over not making the Grand Final of the U18 AFL Youth Girls National Championships wanted to finish on a high note.

SA were probably the underachievers of the Nationals given the talented list of players they bought into the Champs.

Team WA were in the ironic situation of having beaten Queensland but the latter made the Grand Final on percentage.

So both teams came out firing and determined.

The first quarter was a bruising contest with physical clashes being the norm.

WA lost several players to brutal bumps from a committed SA team who supported their ball carrier superbly.

Despite this, WA displayed better run when they did get free and were able to have two goals on the board before SA could penetrate their forward 50.

Jenna McCormick (SA) took some fine overhead marks in an attempt to get movement into her forward line while Kellie-Marie Gibson was lively for the Black Ducks.

Sarah Noga (WA) fought her way through pain to try and keep the ruck ascendancy but her on-ballers couldn’t break away from their SA opponents.

Both teams found the slippery ball hard to handle and dropped uncontested chest marks or fumbled to pick the ball up at ground level resulting in many packs forming.

The second half opened with all the play in the WA forward 50 resulting in three goals in quick succession.

SA composed themselves again and forced the ball forward but the WA defence was resolute holding SA to only one point.

The final quarter clearly showed the girls were running out of puff with SA finding it tough to clear the ball from stoppages as Emma Swanson (WA) tapped out to her runners.

In the end it was a one-sided game on the scoreboard but much closer in general play.

VIC 10.6 (64) def QLD 1.0 (6)

Victoria has won its third U18 Youth Girls National Championships title in a row, beating Queensland in the Grand Final at AAMI Stadium in Adelaide.

Port Adelaide had just played one of the most devastating final 10 minutes of a game ever seen on an AFL ground, turning a 32 point deficit into a 2 point victory.

So the crowd were pumped and several hundred hung around the ground while 200 more tuned into the live streaming to see Victoria take on Queensland in the Youth Girls Nationals curtain closer.

The first quarter showcased Queensland’s never-say-die attitude as they kept the Vics scoreless for the first eight minutes, something no other team had been able to achieve during the Champs.

Jasmine Garner proved the difference between the two teams making herself a formidable target in the forward line and helping Vic get two hard-earned goals for the quarter.

Qld’s Megan Hunt was a ferocious tackler but didn’t have enough support when the ball spilled free. She certainly stemmed the hard running of the Vics at times.

At quarter time VIC 2.0 (12) lead a scoreless QLD.

The second quarter proved frustrating for the Northerners as they had the ball in their forward 50 for the majority of the quarter yet it didn’t show on the scoreboard.

Meanwhile Vic were solid in defence and ran hard off their halfback line through the courageous Tayla Zammit, pushing the ball forward to Garner who slotted another two of her five goals for the match.

Emily Bates battled hard for Qld and was supported by Tayla Harris who took some great overhead marks to try and get the ball into the goal square.

At half time the Vics were 31 points up over Qld who were yet to open their scorecard.

Qld lost their ruck during the second quarter and found it difficult to overcome her loss at stoppages as the Vics dominated ruck taps and directed the ball accurately to their on-ballers.

Garner continued her dominance in the forward line taking a number of exceptional marks despite some close tagging from her Qld opponent.

The Vics piled on another three goals while Qld battled hard to get their first for the game.

At the end of the third term Vics were up by 44 points.

The Queenslanders continued to be thwarted in the fourth quarter as they again received no reward for their efforts despite having the majority of the possessions. Hunt niggled the Vics while Zammit and Rhiannon Banner ran hard.

Late in the term Vics added another two goals to put the result beyond doubt.

Queensland battled hard but were outclassed by a skilful unit.

To sum up, the biggest surprise was WA coming 3rd with QLD the biggest improvers to contest the Grand Final against Victoria. Unfortunately Victoria looks like to be way ahead of the other teams still.

I think the final standings do not exactly reflect the standars of the teams, as with 3 lead in games only, some teams had harder draws than others.

My standing is Vic clearly best, around a 5 goal better team than WA, who are clearly second. Qld another 5 or so behind WA, followed by SA, Vic dev and NSW.

Unfortunately the draw and a slow start by WA against QLD robbed us of a Vic WA final. This was a pity as although Vic would have been overwhelming favourites, WA was the only side in the comp with a chance at an upset over the big V.

The dissapointments being SA who as a footy state should be closer to WA at least. I do not know how to rate NSW or Vic dev, as I dont know the state of junior girls in NSW, or the basis on which Vic dev got picked.

If Vic dev is essentially a Vic reserves team, I thought they would have been stronger, but if it includes girls picked for developement reasons who wouldnt have made a full reserves team, they did OK.
