36 - The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol - The Times They Are a-Changin' - 1964

Dylan wrote this song about his views on 1960's racism and an account on the killing of an African-American barmaid by a young white man who served a short sentence thanks to wealth and connections of his wealthy family. Dylan speaks fondly of this song as something his hero Woodie Guthrie had never done before, a song with a cutting edge.

35 - Love Minus Zero/No Limit - Bringing it All Back Home - 1965

A tuneful and melodic acoustic love song written for future wife Sara featuring a some nice lyrical rhymes and eloquent imagery my love she laughs like the flowers, descriptive opposites She knows there's no success like failure, and that failure's no success at all the song lent itself well in a live setting also.

34 - Visions of Johanna - Blonde on Blonde - 1966

Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet ?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doing our best to deny it

And Louise holds a handful of rain, tempting you to defy it
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there's nothing really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind.

In the empty lot where the ladies play blindman's bluff with the key chain
And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the D-train
We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight
Ask himself if it's him or them that's really insane
Louise she's all right she's just near
She's delicate and seems like the mirror
But she just makes it all too concise and too clear
That Johanna's not here
The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face
Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place.

Now, little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously
He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously
And when bringing her name up
He speaks of a farewell kiss to me
He's sure got a lotta gall to be so useless and all
Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in the hall
Oh, how can I explain ?
It's so hard to get on
And these visions of Johanna they kept me up past the dawn.

Inside the museums, Infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while
But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles
See the primitive wallflower frieze
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze
Hear the one with the mustache say, "Jeeze
I can't find my knees."
Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule
But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel.

The peddler now speaks to the countess who's pretending to care for him
Saying, "Name me someone that's not a parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him."
But like Louise always says
"Ya can't look at much, can ya man."

As she, herself prepares for him
And Madonna, she still has not showed
We see this empty cage now corrode
Where her cape of the stage once had flowed
The fiddler, he now steps to the road
He writes everything's been returned which was owed
On the back of the fish truck that loads
While my conscience explodes
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain
And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain.

32 - My Back Pages - Another Side of Bob Dylan - 1964

Oh but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

A great song that Dylan wrote in 64, The Byrds had a top 40 hit with and a live performance of the song in 1992 featuring George Harrison, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Eric Clapton and Bob to celebrate Dylan's 30th anniversary as a recording artist won a Grammy.

31 - Licence To Kill - Infidels - 1983

I first heard Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers perform this great overlooked track at Dylan's 30th anniversary concert then revisited Infidels album which I rate as his strongest 80's album

Man thinks 'cause he rules the earth he can do with it as he please
And if things don't change soon, he will
Oh, man has invented his doom
First step was touching the moon.

Now there's a woman on my block
She just sit there as the night grows still
She say who gonna take away his license to kill ?

Now, they take him and they teach him and they groom him for life
And they set him on a path where he's bound to get ill

Then they bury him with stars
Sell his body like they do used cars.

Now, there's a woman on my block
She just sit there facing the hill
She say who gonna take away his license to kill ?

Now, he's hell-bent for destruction, he's afraid and confused
And his brain has been mismanaged with great skill
All he believe are his eyes
And his eyes, they just tell him lies.

But there's a woman on my block
Sitting there in a cold chill

She say who gonna take away his license to kill ?

Ya may be a noisemaker, spirit maker
Heartbreaker, backbreaker
Leave no stone unturned
May be an actor in a plot
That might be all that you got
'Til your error you clearly learn.

Now he worships at an altar of a stagnant pool
And when he sees his reflection, he's fulfilled
Oh, man is opposed to fair play
He wants it all and he wants it his way.

Now, there's a woman on my blocks
She just sit there as the night grows still
She say who gonna take away his license to kill ?

30 - Ballad of A Thin Man - Highway 61 Revisited - 1965

Dylan sounds like an old soul on this mastery of phrase and forlorn melody. What a studio band including Al Kooper on keyboards Bob had on this classic album the song sounds brilliant to this day. So What does it all mean and Who is Mr Jones? For Music Trivia buffs Lennon wrote the lyric "I feel so suicidal, just like Dylan's Mr Jones" on the White Album track Yer Blues.

You walk into the room with your pencil in your hand
You see somebody naked and you say, "Who is that man?"
You try so hard but you don't understand
Just what you will say when you get home
Because something is happening here but you don't know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

You raise up your head and you ask, "Is this where it is?"
And somebody points to you and says, "It's his"
And you say, "What's mine?" and somebody else says, "Well, what is?"
And you say, "Oh my God, am I here all alone?"
But something is happening and you don't know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

You hand in your ticket and you go watch the geek
Who immediately walks up to you when he hears you speak
And says, "How does it feel to be such a freak?"
And you say, "Impossible!" as he hands you a bone
And something is happening here but you don't know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

You have many contacts among the lumberjacks
To get you facts when someone attacks your imagination
But nobody has any respect, anyway they already expect you to all give a check
To tax-deductible charity organizations

Ah, you've been with the professors and they've all liked your looks
With great lawyers you have discussed lepers and crooks
You've been through all of F. Scott Fitzgerald's books
You're very well-read, it's well-known

But something is happening here and you don't know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

Well, the sword swallower, he comes up to you and then he kneels
He crosses himself and then he clicks his high heels
And without further notice, he asks you how it feels
And he says, "Here is your throat back, thanks for the loan"
And you know something is happening but you don't know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

Now, you see this one-eyed midget shouting the word "Now"
And you say, "For what reason?" and he says, "How"
And you say, "What does this mean?" and he screams back, "You're a cow!
Give me some milk or else go home"
And you know something's happening but you don't know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

Well, you walk into the room like a camel, and then you frown
You put your eyes in your pocket and your nose on the ground
There ought to be a law against you comin' around
You should be made to wear earphones
'Cause something is happening and you don't know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

blood on the tracks.
idiot wind, jack of hearts,to name a few. in fact the whole album, from start to finish is a classic.

29 - Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - Blonde On Blonde - 1966

Dylan had a rousing hit with this raucous marching band style blues romp with that controversial catch-cry "every body must get stoned" some people believe the "they'll stone you" refrain is Dylan referring to his critics still pissed with his switching from folk acoustic to electric. Legend had it members of the recording band were drunk and stoned marching around the studio singing and performing the song however more likely that was an exaggeration as 3 other tracks were recorded for the album on the same day. Anyway this song was a top 10 hit on both sides of Atlantic making it one of his most commercially successful and memorable songs for many music lovers.

28 - Blind Willie McTell - 1983

Accompanied by Mark Knopfler on 12 string acoustic guitar, Bob recorded a striking piano ballad in 1983 titled after the late blues singer Blind Willie McTell. The song remained unreleased until 1991 on his bootleg series Volumes 1-3 1961-1991 Rare and Unreleased. The melody was based on St James Infirmary Blues with Dylan at times emotionally singing out his verses ridden with the oppression of slavery and the blues during that time. It is hard to fathom why the song was left unreleased not included on a studio album as many fans and critics hailed it on par with the his very best songs.

27 - It Takes A Lot to Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry - Highway 61 Revisited - 1965

Well, I ride on a mailtrain, baby
Can’t buy a thrill
Well, I’ve been up all night, baby
Leanin’ on the windowsill
Well, if I die
On top of the hill
And if I don’t make it
You know my baby will

Don’t the moon look good, mama
Shinin’ through the trees?
Don’t the brakeman look good, mama
Flagging down the “Double E?”
Don’t the sun look good
Goin’ down over the sea?
Don’t my gal look fine
When she’s comin’ after me?

Now the wintertime is coming
The windows are filled with frost
I went to tell everybody
But I could not get across
Well, I wanna be your lover, baby
I don’t wanna be your boss
Don’t say I never warned you
When your train gets lost

26 - Jokerman - Infidels - 1983

A very interesting song lyrically and musically littered with biblical references and political bent with some commentators believing Jokerman to be Jesus Christ or Dylan himself. The song has a Caribbean feel thanks to a Jamaican rhythm section and is sung by Dylan with gusto. "You were born with a snake in both of your fists is a nod to Hercules and "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread" from a 18th Century poem. Looking back Bob himself wasn't a fan of this song or this album, I had to say I disagree with him.

25 - Love Sick - Time out of Mind - 1997

One of if not the best of his late career classics which was performed at the Grammy's where the album Time out Of Mind won Album of the Year, not bad for Bill Dylan (see what I did there) His phrasing and lyrics combined with the the doomed bluesy atmosphere just cuts like a knife for anyone who has had a rough time with love. Daniel Lanois did a wonderful job on this album and song in particular.

I'm walkin' through streets that are dead
Walkin', walkin' with you in my head
My feet are so tired
My brain is so wired
And the clouds are weepin'.

Did I hear someone tell a lie?
Did I hear someone's distant cry?
I spoke like a child
You destroyed me with a smile
While I was sleepin'.

I'm sick of love that I'm in the thick of it
This kind of love, I'm so sick of it.

I see, I see lovers in the meadow
I see, I see silhouettes in the window
I'll watch them 'til they're gone
And they leave me hangin' on
To a shadow.

I'm sick of love, I hear the clock tick
This kind of love, ah, I'm love sick.

Sometimes the silence can be like thunder
Sometimes I wanna take to the road and plunder
Could you ever be true
I think of you
And I wonder.

I'm sick of love, I wish I'd never met you
I'm sick of love, I'm tryin' to forget you.

Just don't know what to do
I'd give anything to
Be with you.

24 - Highway 61 Revisited - Highway 61 Revisited - 1965

Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
God say, "No." Abe say, "What ?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"

Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done ?"
God says. "Out on Highway 61".

Well Georgia Sam he had a bloody nose
Welfare Department they wouldn't give him no clothes
He asked poor Howard where can I go
Howard said there's only one place I know
Sam said tell me quick man I got to run
Ol' Howard just pointed with his gun
And said that way down on Highway 61.

Well Mack the finger said to Louie the King
I got forty red white and blue shoe strings
And a thousand telephones that don't ring
Do you know where I can get ride of these things
And Louie the King said let me think for a minute son
And he said yes I think it can be easily done
Just take everything down to Highway 61.

Now the fift daughter on the twelfth night
Told the first father that things weren't right
My complexion she said is much too white
He said come here and step into the light he says hmmm you're right
Let me tell second mother this has been done
But the second mother was with the seventh son
And they were both out on Highway 61.

Now the rowin' gambler he was very bored
He was tryin' to create a next world war
He found a promoter who nearly fell off the floor
He said I never engaged in this kind of thing before
But yes I think it can be very easily done
We'll just put some bleachers out in the sun
And have it on Highway 61.

23 - I Shall Be Released - Recorded 1967 & 1971 - Released 1971

Dylan's gospel inspired song about the release from sin, the right to redemption. Initially released by The Band in 1968 this song would be covered by several artists of note until Dylan finally released in on his 2nd Greatest Hits album. I love the contrast of the mellowness of the arrangement and the passion in Bob's delivery.

Here is the well known all star performance from The Last Walz
