1. If the Bombers aren’t going to make the finals then they’re definitely shaping them. Essendon have won eight out of their last ten games but a low percentage and a tough run ahead means the Dons are unlikely to sneak into September. Their win over Sydney on Friday night could change things dramatically for finals hopefuls.

2. Richmond made history. No side has ever won 18 in a row at the MCG. The mental advantage this gives the Tigers, who sit on top of the ladder a game clear from second, heading towards a flag defence is huge.

3. Geelong’s entire season could come down to the round 21 clash with Hawthorn at the MCG. Win that and they likely make the cut for September and the same might be true for the Hawks. It’s a mouthwatering prospect for a neutral observer.

4. St Kilda just seem to have the key to exploiting GWS’s weaknesses. They didn’t win on Saturday but the stats indicate that they had the better of them: winning the clearances, contested possessions, tackle and inside 50 counts. They’re one win, one draw and one loss against the Giants in their last three games.

5.The Blues did well to retain the skipper whose leadership and instruction is worth more than any draft pick. Thanks to him turning back the clock and Cripps’s massive effort Carlton fans got to sing the song for the second time this season.
