Jagga Smith’s ACL Injury Sidelines Him for Entire 2025 AFL Season
Carlton’s first-round draft pick, Jagga Smith, has suffered a devastating injury just weeks before the 2025 AFL season. The 19-year-old midfielder tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a pre-season match against St Kilda, ruling him out for the entire year.
The incident occurred when Smith landed awkwardly after a tackle, immediately showing signs of discomfort. Scans later confirmed the ACL rupture, a significant blow for both the young player and Carlton, who had high hopes for his debut season.
Smith, the number three pick in the 2024 AFL draft, had been impressing in pre-season training and was considered a strong candidate for a senior debut early in the season. His injury not only impacts Carlton’s depth but also delays what was expected to be a promising career start.
Carlton’s General Manager of Football, Brad Lloyd, expressed disappointment over the setback but emphasized the club’s commitment to Smith’s long-term recovery. “Jagga has shown incredible professionalism since joining the club, and we have no doubt he will attack his rehabilitation with the same dedication,” Lloyd stated.
The midfielder will undergo surgery in the coming weeks, followed by a rigorous rehabilitation program. ACL injuries typically require a 9–12 month recovery period, meaning Smith is unlikely to return until the 2026 season.
This unfortunate news comes as several AFL players, including Melbourne’s Andy Moniz-Wakefield, have also suffered similar injuries in the pre-season. With the 2025 season set to begin on March 6, Carlton will now need to adjust their plans to compensate for Smith’s absence.
Despite the setback, the club remains optimistic about Smith’s long-term future. With strong support from teammates, medical staff, and coaches, he is expected to make a full recovery and return to AFL action stronger than ever.
