The GIANTS have secured the long-term future of star defender Connor Idun, who has signed a six-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until at least the end of the 2032 AFL season.
Idun, already contracted until the end of 2026, becomes one of the longest-signed players in the league following his commitment. His new deal comes just days after the GIANTS secured another key re-signing, young gun Finn Callaghan, to a four-year extension.
Since being drafted with pick 61 in the 2018 AFL Draft, Idun has developed into a cornerstone of the GIANTS’ defence. Known for his athleticism and versatility, he became a regular fixture in the team in 2021, playing 21 out of 22 games that season. His performances have continued to improve, with 2023 marking a standout year as he was named the joint winner of the club’s Best Finals Player award.
The 24-year-old enjoyed a career-best 2024 season, playing all 25 games and finishing fourth in the Kevin Sheedy Medal. Recognized as one of the league’s top one-on-one and intercept defenders, Idun was also voted into the club’s leadership group for a third consecutive year.
GIANTS Executive General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, praised Idun’s dedication and impact on the team.
“It’s really exciting to have Connor make such a long-term commitment to the club,” McCartney said. “He’s an exceptional footballer and leader who continues to get better every year. At just 24, his best is still ahead of him.”
McCartney highlighted Idun’s reliability and flexibility in defence, adding that his commitment, along with Callaghan’s re-signing, is a testament to the strong culture the GIANTS have built.
The GIANTS will kick off their 2025 campaign with a pre-season match against Carlton in the AAMI Community Series in Canberra this Friday. They will officially open their season with a blockbuster Opening Round clash against Collingwood at ENGIE Stadium on Sunday, March 9.
