Essendon ruckman Sam Draper is poised to reaffirm his commitment to the Bombers, turning down interest from rival clubs, notably the Adelaide Crows. Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph reported during Fox Footy’s broadcast of the Geelong-Essendon Community Series match that Draper is set to sign a substantial long-term contract extension with Essendon.

“He’s the Essendon free agency holdout, [but] I can tell you tonight, fantastic news, he will sign at the Essendon Football Club,” Ralph announced. He further noted that Draper has been encouraged by a strong pre-season, including weight loss, and has no intention of returning to Adelaide.

The anticipated contract is expected to span six years, with an annual salary of approximately $800,000. While some may question the figure based on recent performances, Ralph emphasized that Draper’s potential justifies the investment. “In career-best form, that’s what he’s worth,” he stated.

Draper, a 26-year-old South Australian, managed 16 senior games last season despite battling a groin injury. He averaged 11.2 disposals, 3.1 marks, 19.1 hit-outs, 3.2 inside-50s, and 3.5 clearances per game. His dynamic presence in the ruck is considered pivotal to Essendon’s midfield success.

Three-time Richmond premiership player Jack Riewoldt underscored Draper’s significance to the team, suggesting he might be Essendon’s most crucial player. “When we get good Draper, I think Essendon are a force to be reckoned with,” Riewoldt commented during the broadcast.

The decision to retain Draper reflects Essendon’s confidence in his abilities and their commitment to building a competitive squad under coach Brad Scott. With Draper’s re-signing, the Bombers aim to solidify their ruck division and provide stability for their developing midfield talents.

As the 2025 AFL season approaches, Essendon supporters can look forward to Draper’s continued impact on the field, anchoring the team’s efforts in both ruck contests and around the ground play.
