AFL Backs Victoria Park Stadium as Transformational Boost for Brisbane Sport

The AFL has thrown its full support behind the Queensland Government’s decision to build a new 60,000-seat stadium at Victoria Park, a move hailed as a game-changer for Brisbane’s sporting future.

Following the 2032 Olympic Games, the state-of-the-art venue will become the new home of the Brisbane Lions. AFL CEO Andrew Dillon praised the commitment by Queensland Premier the Hon David Crisafulli MP, who endorsed the recommendation from the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA).

“This is a transformational moment for the city, the community, and for all sporting codes,” Dillon said. “It sets the stage for a cultural and sporting legacy that will stretch well beyond the 2032 Olympics.”

Dillon highlighted the economic and tourism potential of the stadium, noting that Brisbane is now positioned to host blockbuster events capable of drawing capacity crowds and national attention.

“Our fans are passionate and love to travel for the game. With a 60,000-seat stadium, we can supercharge marquee events and fill Victoria Park just like we do with Gabba sellouts,” he said.

“I can already hear the roar of 60,000 Queenslanders when the Lions take the field for their first game in their new home.”

Dillon also tied the announcement to the AFL’s broader strategic vision, including its ambitious targets of 10 million annual match attendees and over one million registered participants by 2033.

“The potential of this stadium unlocks new opportunities—not just for AFL and AFLW, but for Queensland’s major events industry at large,” he added.

Dillon extended thanks to Premier Crisafulli, Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie, the GIICA team, and sporting stakeholders including the Brisbane Lions, Cricket Queensland, Cricket Australia, and the Olympic movement.

“This is more than just a stadium—it’s a lasting legacy that honours the spirit of the 2032 Games,” he said. “The AFL is ready to do its part: grow the game in Queensland, fill the stands, and create unforgettable sporting moments at Victoria Park.”
