In front of a roaring crowd of over 78,000 – a record home attendance for the Bulldogs – the two sides delivered a Friday night classic that went down to the wire. Despite periods of inaccuracy, Collingwood’s ability to hold composure in the final moments proved the difference.
The Bulldogs were well served by young star Sam Darcy, who had a breakout performance with four goals and six contested marks. The 208cm forward looked dangerous every time the ball came his way, giving the Dogs a strong aerial presence and plenty of scoreboard impact.
However, the game’s narrative was shaped by a series of controversial umpiring decisions. A heavily lopsided free-kick count (33 to 14 in Collingwood’s favor) drew the ire of Bulldogs fans and players alike. Particularly contentious was a late free against Bailey Dale for insufficient intent, while a similar action by Nick Daicos earlier went uncalled.
Adding to the drama, Bulldogs tall Rory Lobb struck Mason Cox in the face during a marking contest, forcing the Magpie ruckman to receive stitches. Though the incident appeared accidental and was judged a legitimate spoil attempt, it added further intensity to an already physical contest.
Collingwood’s veteran leadership came through in the final term. Steele Sidebottom kicked a clutch goal late in the fourth quarter, stretching the Magpies’ lead to 10 points and giving them enough buffer to withstand the Dogs’ final push.
Nick Daicos was again central to Collingwood’s success, collecting 39 disposals and leading the midfield in both pressure and poise. Meanwhile, the Magpies suffered a major blow with young defender Reef McInnes leaving the field early with a suspected ACL injury.
Post-match, Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge noted the free-kick imbalance but stressed the need for his side to avoid giving umpires reasons to blow the whistle. Collingwood’s Craig McRae praised his team’s composure, particularly in closing out tight games.
Despite the defeat, the Bulldogs showed plenty of promise. For Collingwood, it was another example of why they remain one of the most dangerous teams under pressure.
