Dane Swan - No Passengers Player Critique

Looks like One5 is away ATM as I haven't seen him posting so I thought I would fire in a player summary to generate a level of discussion (sorry to steal your thunder if you're out there one5).

Past 4 years average - 53, 65, 102, 102
Past 4 years games - 13, 14, 20, 22

Dane Swan is the premier Pies midfielder who has elevated his game to the elite level over the past 2 seasons through increased fitness and increased opportunities.

Over the past 2 seasons Swan has averaged 24 disposals, 8 marks and 3 tackles per match with 32 goals kicked in 46 matches. Basically, Swan does it all from a DT perspective which is why his scoring average is so high. Last season, including finals, Swan had 12/25 games over 100 with another 4 over 90. Swan often lets himself down with his disposal however from a DT perspective this has no impact.

The 2 issues which concern DT coaches the most are that he always receives the number 1 tag and has limited TOG. Interestingly his TOG last year was up 11 mins from 2006 yet his weekly average of 102 was unchanged. Collingwood appear to have found the key which is that he plays best in short, sharp bursts which is why he is the most regularly interchanged player for the Pies. Swan also showed in the prelim final against the Cats that he can handle the tag. When "The Curse of the Pink Pig" was applied, Swan managed to score 106 which probably equates to 150 against anyone else.

Durability wise he is quite solid having missed 2 games in 2006 and none last season however there is currently some talk he is carrying a leg injury.

Currently priced at 391K, Swan is probably underpriced by around 20-30K and IMO will comfortably finish in the top 6 mids (injury permitting). Swan is currently in around 7% of DT teams.

I would suggest he is a strong upgrade option at the current time for those looking to strengthen their midfield.

I don't understand how he does it but you can't argue with his numbers. Starts the game on the bench, and makes his way back there enough to make DT coaches nervous, but gets good scores more often than not and has the capability to get 150s which is a good sign. His points per minute is usually above 1 which is excellent (have not crunched the 2008 numbers though). Can become the 'everywhere man' and a few years ago this used to annoy me like nothing else, but then I got him in and felt much better about it. Mick Malthouse tends to let him loose in the last quarter becuase he is 'fresh' and I have seen his game score double in the last.

If he is carrying an injury - and that was a strong rumour for a while - the week off will help and in Dr Stig's opinion* he will be fine. Can be a little inconsistent but his big scores cancel the below average ones. When he gets a big game you will want to be on board. 391k is good value and Swan will be a popular upgrade target for many this week.

They don't call him the great Dane for nothing.

*Dr Nick Riviera is easily more qualified than Dr Stig...

think pendlebury might start getting tagged before swan if he plays like he did on anzac day, he uses the ball better than swan and therefore is more damaging

this only increases swan's potential and value!

This guy is an absolute dream team gun, I picked him in his break out year when he was a back and have had a soft spot for him since.

Knows where to find the ball, takes a lot of marks (strog for his size), and kick goals, recipe for lots of points. He has definitely been carrying a niggle since the Carlton game, so expect his scores to rise after the week off.

The other thing that I think has been affecting his form is that Collingwood has not been going well, he hasn't had the chance to sneak forward for a couple of goals a match. I expect this to return to normal as the Pies lift in the second half of the year.

At $391k is a great buy, not in the same class as Kornes/Bartel/Corey, but not far below them at all.

I always thought that the opposition never paid any attention to him because he can't kick. Who's right?

Swan is a guy who could win the brownlow if he learnt how to kick, truely he is sometimes terrible at best, but being a loyal dream teamer it doesnt bother me.

I know it sounds a bit off but seriously, from memory he led the brownlow half way through it or he was at least right up there, he managed to end up with 20 brownlow votes which got him equal third and down at collingwood there isnt much people to take votes off him consistently, sure pendlebury, burns and thomas could take the odd votes off him but not like at geelong where each week where half the team can take votes off the big guns like ablett and bartel.

His disposal is not very damaging at all, although I guess his hard running causes the occasional problem.

The beauty of the guy from a DT standpoint is that he always wants the ball. He runs into space and gets those cheap possies and marks. If he's struggling he'll make an effort to get the ball from a kick in etc.

He is an absolute DT gun, don't have a lot of time for him as an actual football player though.

Theres a number of factors you can look at with swan, TOG and all the rest of it but really the way i see if with swan is plain and simple.

Swans best attribute, in my opinion is his love of kicking over handball. Countless times he will get the ball and kick to absolutely no option down the field , usually to the teams detriment. I've even seen him kick the ball when lying down on his back , such is his hatred towards the 1 point handball.

Having said all this Swan is still scoring well this year but his ratio of kick to handball is not quite as high. Seems to be getting stuck on his wrong side a bit and having to handball.
