Well well well, the very last player in the draft. No I'm not going to pull off some completely and utterly awesome slider like wheels did with Heath Shaw but for the final pick of the draft I think I'll go wiiittth...

To be honest I don't really see the point of drafting emergencies and having a trading period. Everyone should have already drafted the players they wanted. If you mucked up the balance of your team that is your own fault.

I reckon we should just do a write-up on the 22 that we select, such as strengths, weaknesses and a game plan and then vote on the teams.

I doubt that anybody else will do one...

FINAL TEAM:
B: D Morris, M Scarlett, R Hayden
HB: C Newman, T Croad, M Mattner
C: M Priddis, B Kirk (vc), C Bateman
HF: R O'Keefe, M Pavlich (c), B Gibbs
F: M Campbell, D Bradshaw, Al Davey
R: A Sandilands, L Power, M Boyd
I/C: D Petrie, D Cassisi, T Johnstone, X Ellis

PICKS:
#6 - Matthew Scarlett:
With my first pick I opted to pick in my opinion, the best full back of the competition. As a general rule, I started to pick my spine first, as good midfielders are easier to come by than good backs/forwards.

#9 - Matthew Pavlich:
I was very surprised that Pavlich was still available at pick #9. One of the best forwards in the competition and also one of the most inspirational captains.

#20 - Daniel Bradshaw:
In hindsight I probably took Bradshaw a bit too high (Lloyd #58, Hall #66), but at the time I was pleased to have my CHF and FF set in stone.

#23 - Aaron Sandilands:
With Cox already taken, I wanted to ensure that I wasn't lagging behind in the ruck stocks, and took Sandilands at #23. With Petrie able to ruck while Sandilands is off the ground, this duo is one of the best in the competition.

#34 - Trent Croad:
Probably took Croad too high (Lake #43, Hudghton #55, McPharlin #57, Fletcher #60), but I have always been a fan. Finished my spine which I was very pleased with.

#37 - Brett Kirk:
The first midfielder I took and a mini-steal at pick #37. Tough as nails in and under player, underrated in my opinion.

#48 - Chance Bateman:
After taking Kirk with #37, I wanted an outside midfielder, and Bateman is just about the best in the competition at that. Had a somewhat breakout year and was an important part in a premiership midfield.

#51 - Luke Power:
Was tossing up between Power and Sewell for this pick. Ummed and ahhed for a while, then decided on Power. Sewell ended up being picked at #52, so it was clearly a tough call.

#62 - Dale Morris:
All-Australian back pocket this year and one of the premium backmen in the competition. Can play on smalls or talls and gives a lot of versatility to my backline.

#65 - Ryan O'Keefe:
Was fairly surprised that O'Keefe was still available at #65, but I guess these kind of players slip. Wanted Robert Murphy for my other forward flank, but didn't eventuate.

#76 - Drew Petrie:
Steal. Petrie is underrated. Can play back, forward or in the ruck, and once again gives my team a lot of versatility. More than handy back-up ruck for Sandilands.

#79 - Marty Mattner:
Probably should have taken another midfielder here, rather than a back flank, but still, Mattner's a fine player. Was very pleased with my backline of Scarlett, Croad, Morris and Mattner, with Petrie floating in when necessary.

#90 - Matt Priddis:
Needed a midfielder. Was tossing up between Priddis and Boyd, was glad that Boyd slid a further 3 rounds and I was able to take him at #107.

#93 - Roger Hayden:
Could have waited a few more rounds and picked Wirrpanda if Hayden had been taken, but wanted to take him as soon as possible. Possibly the best small backman in the competition.

#104 - Bryce Gibbs:
Was once again thinking about Boyd here, but opted for Gibbs. Adds to my midfield rotations and can kick a few goals.

#107 - Matthew Boyd:
Finally took Boyd after a few rounds of nearly taking him. Was pleased that he slid this far, definitely underrated and one of the Bulldogs' best midfielders.

#118 - Chris Newman:
Steal. Surprised that he slid this far - I even overlooked him... Probably would have taken him at #79 if he had come to mind. Possibility for Richmond's captaincy this year and strengthens my backline more so.

#121 - Alwyn Davey:
Took a small backman here to crumb Pavlich and Bradshaw. Decided that Davey was the best one available and took him. Matt Campbell and Lindsay Thomas were considered.

#132 - Domenic Cassisi:
Cassisi has always been one of my favourites - big fan. Would have liked Salopek too, but didn't happen.

#135 - Travis Johnstone:
Went for the best available midfielder here. Johnstone would rip it up, considering he doesn't have to put up with the tag (Kirk, Bateman, Power, Priddis etc).

#146 - Matt Campbell:
Thought about this one for a while and thought that I'd go with another small, crumbing forward. This would allow Davey to play up the field a bit more.

#149 - Xavier Ellis:
Rapidly improving and will be one of the competition's best in a few years, in my opinion. Played a big part in the Grand Final.

STRENGTHS?
- Spine (Scarlett, Croad, Pavlich, Bradshaw)
- Ruck rotation
- Defence

GAMEPLAN?

Use Sandilands' height to advantage to win the majority of the ball. Get the clearance through Kirk, Power and Boyd. Give it to Bateman or Priddis if available and bomb it long into the forward line, trying to get Pavlich and Bradshaw in one on one contests. Davey and Campbell to crumb.

Croad to mainly play on the opposition's best forward. Scarlett to go to the second best and provide a lot of run. Newman and Morris to rotate on the third tall/floating half back. Mattner to rebound primarily and Hayden to the best small forward. Petrie is also available if Scarlett/Croad are being beaten.

Gibbs, O'Keefe, Ellis, Johnstone, Davey, Cassisi, Boyd, Power, Pavlich, Priddis, Kirk and Bateman to rotate through the middle.

I think we should get everyone to post up a write-up before we vote.
Here's mine.
Wrote it up in word and cbf with spelling so not sure how it will turn out.

Game Plan:
The game plan is basically gather the ball, give it to one of the outside runners, move the ball fast and get it into the forward line. Once in the forward line use miss-matches to score.

This is my starting team…

FB: Daniel Pratt, Dustin Fletcher, Tom Harley
HB: Craig Bolton, Adam Hunter, Jason Gram
C: Brett Deledio, Brock Mclean, Ryan Griffen
HF: Jason Akermanis, Matthew Richardson, Matthew Stokes
FF: Stephen Milne, David Hale, Daniel Motlop

R: Dean Cox, Jimmy Bartel, Cameron Ling
Int: Marc Murphy, Peter Burgoyne, Graham Johncock, Danyle Pearce

The backline looks reasonably solid with Fletcher, Harley and Hunter covering talls and Pratt and Bolton taking the medium/smalls while Gram is the set-up player with his long kicking.
The forward line is ‘makeshift’, but the idea is that Matthew Richardson runs up the ground leaving Hale as the only tall in the forward line and a whole lot of dangerous small forwards for teams to match up.
The ruck situation is pretty good imo, Cox plays 80% of game time and then is on the bench for the rest, Hale plays up forward while Cox is in the ruck and then switches into the ruck with someone like a Deledio going forward and Murphy/Pearce coming on for him, once again leaving some very hard match-ups for defenders in my forward line.
My midfield rotations are pretty clear cut, Bartel goes head to head against the best opposition midfielder, I’d back him in to at least draw even against the Ablett’s and Judd’s. Ling then tag’s their second best mid limiting their effectiveness, all the other midfielders are free to do whatever they want as I’d back their run and creativeness in any situation.
Mclean/Bartel/Ling to rotate with Murphy/Burgoyne while Deledio/Griffen rotate with Pearce/Richardson/Gram.

However depending on match-ups, my team could also very easily look like this
FB: Daniel Pratt, Dustin Fletcher, Graeme Johncock
HB: Peter Burgoyne, Tom Harley, Jason Gram
C: Danyle Pearce, Brock Mclean, Ryan Griffen
HF: Brett Deledio, Matthew Richardson, Adam Hunter
FF: Stephen Milne, David Hale, Daniel Motlop

R: Dean Cox, Jimmy Bartel, Cameron Ling
Int: Marc Murphy, Craig Bolton, Matthew Stokes, Jason Akermanis

This leaves gives me more height in my forwardline in case it’s needed to expose other team’s smaller defenders with Milne the only forward unable of playing ‘tall’.
My defense takes on a more attacking look with both Burgoyne and Johncock being able to accumulate large numbers and drive it out of defense.
My midfield/ruck rotations stay the same as above.

And just to be difficult, what team would be able to give good match-ups for this set-up?
FB: Daniel Pratt, Dustin Fletcher, Tom Harley
HB: Craig Bolton, Adam Hunter, Peter Burgoyne
C: Matthew Richardson, Brock Mclean, Ryan Griffen
HF: Jason Akermanis, Brett Deledio, Matthew Stokes
FF: Stephen Milne, Daniel Motlop, Cameron Ling

R: David Hale, Jimmy Bartel, Jason Gram
Int: Marc Murphy, Danyle Pearce, Graham Johncock, Dean Cox

The forward line basically has no talls, yet has players such as Motlop, Ling and Deledio who can play tall and take a mark, all they have to do is get the ball to ground for one of the other small forwards to score.

Strengths:
I’m just going to throw it out there and say I probably have the most versatile team with almost all of the players (genuinely) being able to rotate between positions and have effect.
My team’s firepower. Although lacking KPF’s I’d have to say my team is the most capable of scoring quickly and scoring often, I haven’t done the stats for other teams, but my team averaged 147 points per game (goals+points/players/average matches per player). My team scored 463 goals and 267 behinds for the year and the average matches played was 21.2.
My midfield, I’m not going to say it’s the best(I quite like goal sneaks), but if it isn’t the best it would have to be close, the sheer volume of people I can have rotate through my midfield also helps.
My rucks, I have the best ruckman in the game, and what I consider to be the best back-up ruckman in the game.
My team’s defensive capabilities, only 3 teams drafted ‘genuine’ taggers in Ling, K.Cornes and Sewell. Added to that my team is pretty solid defensively, with Fletcher still being able to play well, Pratt and Bolton Shutting down the small/medium forwards Hunter taking the CHF with Harley helping him out while shutting his own player down.
My team also has the ability to move the ball very quickly through breaking the lines and long kick.
Weaknesses:
A genuine lack of KPF’s, however with my gameplan this shouldn’t really matter at all.
Adam Hunter at CHB, I was wanting Waite, however it was not to be, Harley would have to help him out a fair bit at this position.
Consistency, most of my players are exciting to watch and are genuine game breakers, however a few of them drift in and out of games.

Decided to do a pick by pick because I'm bored.
Also Tom Harley is my captain with Mclean and Richardson to be joint vice.

Pick 4 - beats - Dean Cox (West Coast)
Was tossing up between Cox and Riewoldt, I decided that there should be a good KPF at my next pick so went with who is clearly the best player in his specific area of the game.
Pick 11 - beats - Jimmy Bartel (Geelong)
Bartel was clearly the best midfielder here imo, I was thinking that I’d take a KPF here but I didn’t judge Roughead/Bradshaw to be worth taking at this point over the like’s of a Bartel.
Pick 18 - beats - Matthew Richardson (Richmond)
Was hoping that Bock would last to my pick, I decided that versatility would be good here, Richardson was probably the best player here as he kicked 50 goals for the year playing all over the ground, was also considering Black, Bradshaw and Sandilands for this pick.

Pick 25 - beats - Brett Deledio (Richmond)
Possibly took him a little too high, but he kicked 30 or so goals as a midfielder and he can play as a forward if needed too, decided at this point that versatility and a strong midfield were the core values of my team, was also considering Scott Thompson and Shaun Burgoyne here but thought they’d be more chance of slipping that Deledio
Pick 32 - beats - Cameron Ling (Geelong)
Once again goalsneak took the player I wanted the pick before mine, Probably went with ling a little early, but I wouldn’t have picked 5 of the next 6 players this early anyway, Ling also adds goal kicking ability. I decided that seeing as I lacked KPF, having goal kicking midfielders was a priority.
Pick 39 - beats - Ryan Griffen (Western Bulldogs)
In hindsight I would have picked someone else here, probably KP, as I feel more than any other pick that I chose him too high here, however he’s a favourite of mine and is a damaging player so not unhappy to have chosen him.
Pick 46 - beats - Brock McLean (Melbourne)
Probably not the best player available, but I needed ‘extractor’ mids, so went with Mclean here, was also considering Power, but in the Carlton draft game he lasted well into the 90’s so decided to go with Mclean instead.
Pick 53 - beats - Daniel Motlop (Port Adelaide)
Still no proper KPP, however Motlop can play 3rd tall very wel, and he scored 60 or so goals for the year, imo was best available at this pick, however was very much hoping Mcpharlin and Hudghton would have lasted to my next pick.
Pick 60 - beats - Dustin Fletcher (Essendon)
Probably to early again, but after what I considered to be most of the better full backs were taken decided to bite the bullet and take him, was hoping Cloke would last.
Pick 67 - beats - David Hale (North Melbourne)
Really wanted Dale Morris here, however not unhappy taking a guy who scored under slightly under 40 goals for the year and who is imo the best ‘2nd ruck’ in the game, as a side note he was preferred to Petrie as a rucking option, which is why I took him ahead of Petrie.
Pick 74 - beats - Tom Harley (Geelong)
Wanted Dane Swan here but probably a good thing he got taken as getting Harley definitely helps my defense, was considering Petrie to play at CHB, but decided Harley could cover that position if needed and that what he does normally is 1st class.

Pick 81 - beats - Craig Bolton (Sydney)
I think that he’s a steal here and was just too good to pass up.

Pick 88 - beats - Steven Milne (St Kilda)
This pick was out of leon davis, mooney and milne, I don’t really rate mooney but I needed a KPF, as he was taken however I went with someone who kicked more goals for the year than mooney anyway.

Pick 95 - beats - Marc Murphy (Carlton)
Five of the six players taken between my picks were ‘next on my list’ so was quite annoyed at this round, went with Murphy as I felt that he was probably the best midfielder around at this point(and a little bit of a steal too).
Pick 102 - beats - Jason Akermanis (Western Bulldogs)
I wanted Green but Akermanis had a stellar year to end up with 50 or so goals, he can rotate through the midfield and is a fantastic small forward.

Pick 109 - beats - Jason Gram (St Kilda)
I think he’s a huge steal here, he was always the ‘back-up’ option for my last few picks so was quite happy to get him at this point.

Pick 116 - beats - Daniel Pratt (North Melbourne)
I really wanted Drummond, but I really really wanted Waite and I was banking on him being available for a while yet as everyone else had KPB covered, decided to go with Pratt as imo he was the best small defender all year.

Pick 123 - beats - Adam Hunter (West Coast)
In hindsight I don’t think any of you would’ve taken him at all, but I think that it was worth me having him as he can play KP back or forward, and I was lacking in both those areas. Also it’s hard to judge how players are rated in this game(eg, potential, feats accomplished etc.) but back at when he was at his best, what he was doing then is exactly what was needed for my team, a KPD who can also go forward and kick a goal or two.

Pick 130 - beats - Peter Burgoyne (Port Adelaide)
Thought he was a steal here, a very good player who can play back or middle and rack up the numbers.
Pick 137 - beats - Matthew Stokes (Geelong)
If my memory is right I think he was the highest goal kicker not taken yet, he also adds to my forwardline and midfield.
Pick 144 - beats - Graham Johncock (Adelaide)
Imo better than Heath Shaw and one of the better small backs in the game, I considered him a very very solid pick up at this point.
Pick 151 - beats – Danyle Pearce
Went with the rising star winner over Quentin Lynch, only just though, deciding that even though he would be on the bench and that Lynch would most likely start on the ground, that he would add more to my team.

Pick 7 - Bails2008 - Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda)
No brainer here. Picking last dictated my direction. Toss of the coin between him and Brown for the best CHF in the league but the best lead up forward in the land. Fantastic target and straightens any side up. Works his backside off. Perfect player to build a side around. A superstar

Pick 8 - Bails2008 - Brendan Fevola (Carlton)
With Reiwoldt the best forward tandem chosen. Kicked 99 goals with absolutely no support. Imagine what he would do with Reiwoldt in front of him. Unstoppable at his best.

Pick 21 - Bails2008 - Ben Rutten (Adelaide)
With Scarlett gone the next best KP defender in the AFL in my opinion. An outstanding goals conceded per match average and can play on any elite key position player.
Pick 22 - Bails2008 - Adam Goodes (Sydney)
Interesting choice here. 2 time brownlow medalist who can play anywhere and is a nightmare to match up on. Not his best year this year with injury but a superstar at his best. Kicked 8 on one leg late in the year. Probably chose him for the versatility he provides.

Pick 35 - Bails2008 - Patty Ryder (Essendon)
Maybe a little high but my focus was to build a dominating spine. Was going to take Bolton but felt with the selection of Rutten that Ryder with his athleticism and ability to read the play offered better balance. His ability to play forward or ruck made him a very attractive option.
Pick 36 - Bails2008 - Alan Didak (Collingwood)
My focus from this pick on was to pick players who could play multiple positions. Collingwood's best player this year up till round 18 and led the AFL in kicks for the majority of the year. One of the best users of the ball I have ever seen, can make the ball talk from any point of the ground. As effective as a midfielder as he is as a small forward. Lighting quick and outstanding overhead as well.

Pick 49 - Bails2008 - Simon Goodwin (Adelaide)
Thought he was a steal here. If he played for a Victorian club would get more kudos. Multiple All-Australian who is one of the premier mid-fielders in the country. Breaks lines as well as anyone in the game and beautiful by foot. Has been a gun for 10 years and his standard has never dropped at any stage. Has kicked 8 as a forward so again offers wonderful flexibility. Imagine a rotation of him, Didak, Porplyzyia and Chapman-
Pick 50 - Bails2008 - Brad Ottens (Geelong)
Best ruckman available and thought the standard dropped away significantly after him which forced my arm. Very good as a resting forward. Beautiful kick of the ball which was a prequisite in the majority of my selections.

Pick 63 - Bails2008 - Paul Chapman (Geelong)
One of the steals of the draft IMO. One of my favourite players which made the pick even easier. Tough, hard and wonderfully skilled player. A footballers footballer. Once he gets it within 50 shut the book. Can play in numerous positions with great effect. Outstanding overhead and excellent at stoppages.

Pick 64 - Bails2008 - Jordan Lewis (Hawthorn)
Love the way this bloke plays football. Was going to take him at least 4 times but took a chance he might drift. Was rapt when he did. A big tough hard bodied ball magnet.

Pick 77 - Bails2008 - Corey Enright (Geelong)
Was going to take Craig Bolton here. When he was taken felt this player was to hard to pass up. A quiet achiever in Geelongs star studded side. Tall, high possesion winner who can shut down oposition players as well as he can win the football. Great option across half back
Pick 78 - Bails2008 - Tadhg Kennelly (Sydney)
Maybe a little high but wanted a damaging half back flank. Dont know if anyone in the AFL does this better The run and carry this guy provides off half back was ideal for the forward line I built. His willingness to back himself and break lines makes him a weapon once we win the ball.

Pick 91 - Bails2008 - Jason Porplyzia (Adelaide)
Massive steal. Gun young player in the midfield or across half forward. Rapt to get him here

Pick 92 - Bails2008 - Nathan Foley Richmond)
Underrated player. Provides terrific run and carry and outstanding in the clinchers. No one has worked harder to become an A grader than this bloke. Can also be a excellent defensive midfield option.

Pick 105 - Bails2008 - Cyril Rioli (Hawthorn)
WOW. Cant believe players like Milne went before him. Was thinking of taking Flash but this kid is an absolute beauty. Was the perfect option for the forward group I had put together. Has everything. His defensive pressure and tackling is elite, can win the ball in the midfield and has that X factor you want from a small forward. What appealed to me the most was his ability to influence a game without having huge possession counts
Pick 106 - Bails2008 - Mark McVeigh (Essendon)
Love the flexibility this bloke offers to my side. Wanted a player who can play as a small defender or in the midfield and he does it as well as most. Had a magnificent season and brings hardness, leadership and defensive pressure to my side

Pick 119 - Bails2008 - Brett Burton (Adelaide)
This was a late bonus. Wanted a third tall and when I noticed he was available jumped at the chance. Outside of Robbo the best high flyer in the comp. The exciting thing for me was my forward line is that strong I have the luxury of using the Birdman as a tall wing man. Will be used as a link man through the middle but with the licence to go forward

Pick 120 - Bails2008 - Nick Stevens (Carlton)
The modern game relvoves around high rotations from the interchange and multiple options. At 120 his ability to win the football and finish by foot was to hard to pass up. A luxury coming off the bench

Pick 133 - Bails2008 - Luke Ball (St Kilda)
In a bit of a left field selection I have chosen Ball as a defensive midfielder/stopper. With the midfield depth I have think he would be awesome in the role. Very much in the Ling mold with the ability to win his own ball whilst shutting his opponent down. A hard, tough inside midfielder who wins the ball in traffic and has terrific leadership skills as well
Pick 134 - Bails2008 - Michael Firrito (North Melbourne)
Was him or Mundy but felt Spuds ability to play on tall or smalls suited my side perfectly. A tough hard running defender who I chose for team balance. Love his toughness, competitiveness and run from half back.

Pick 147 - Bails2008 - Will Minson (Western Bulldogs)
Needed a second ruckman. Choose him over Charman, Hudson etc because of his ability to link up through the midfield and go forward and kick goals.

Pick 148 - Bails2008 - Adam McPhee (Essendon)

Can play back, forward or the wing. Thought with my last pick that he gives me cover in numerous postions and at his best an ALL-Australians

Fair point. I went to school with Milne, hate the bloke. A complete knob. Played against him when he was at Dandenong as well in later years and that strengthened my dislike of the tip rat. Just cant stand him as a bloke. Not the sharpest tool in the shed. Think those factors cloud my judgment of him but he has done well as a small forward to be fair. However I think Rioli is a more rounded player

FB-A.McLeod, D.Glass, J.Rivers
HB-L.Hodge(VC), C.Cornes, D.Milburn
C-S.Pendlebury, S.Black, D.Thomas
HF-P.Medhurst, J.Brown(C), D.Rodan
FF-M.Williams, B.Hall, B.Ebert
FOL-D.Jolly, L.Hayes, B.Sewell
INT-B.Lade, J.Bowden, J.Bolton, L.Montagna

Backline-
Glass and Cornes as my two big key position backs. both have been past all Australians and I feel confident that they can hold most KPF for other clubs.
Rivers is my third tall and when fully fit is as good as any other third tall out there. He will be the player to float into contests in order to double team players if I feel necessary.
Then I have Hodge and Milburn who are also all Australian backman who add some grunt down back. I feel these two guys can hold all the small forwards except maybe ones with pace.
This is where McLeod comes in. A player with genuine pace to hold the quick forwards and to give some good run out of the back line.
Midfield
Black is a previous brownlow medal winner in the centre. An absolute gem who gives that silky class in the middle. I surrounded him with Sewell who can be my tagger if required and mainly my clearance man. While Hayes adds a little more hardness in the centre aswell.
On the wings I've gone for two young guys in thomas and Pendlebury. Thomas for his pace and attacking ability and Pendulbury for his agility and sensational vision.
Forward
I've gone for two big men who are match winners up front in Brown and Hall. Both can kick plenty of goals and they are big physical men( I would like to see some one try to rough up these two before a game).
I've gone for Williams and Ebert as the lead up forwards who can also do a bit of crumbing work down in the forward line. These two can can chip in with a few goals each.
Lastly my crumbing forwards in Medhurst and Rodan. Both quick can play up the ground or close to goal and both have that ability to kick freaky goals.
Rucks-
Jolly. Went this guy as he is a good tap ruckman and the top two were already gone at this stage
Interchange
Lade. went for him as my second ruckman as I think he is as good as anyone elses second ruckman. he's been an all australian and can go forward if need be.
Bowden. Went for him as he can fill in the gaps down back or even move forward if the team rquires.
montanya. I thought he had a great season and he will be rotated through the middle. i thought he was a steal as my back up midfielder.
Bolton. this guy is a hard at it player that I feel can play any where on the ground, so he is basically my utility.
