Aquinas started training last night, there was a solid 45 blokes on the track with the oval in possibly the best nick I've ever seen it in.The thick grass coverage giving us a nice soft deck for preseason training.

I've tried to get a kick out there twice, in 2004 and 2007. The first time, it was in pretty good nick, nice even cover, but a bit boggy (I know it sounds ridiculous now). It was simply the angle of the ground and it's exposure to the element which I felt created a really good home ground advantage for the Friars.

As for the 2007 experience, well quite frankly:

1. it had more sand on it than Elwood Beach, I half expected we would strip down to our budgie-smugglers and start some beach sprints;

2. however, the centre square wicket area managed to resemble the 3rd runway at Tullamarine Airport,

3. Unless they've excavated down 5 metres into the hill on the interchange wing, and levelled the whole thing, it will still tilt about 7 degrees from the changerooms down to the north-west corner. If it is now a bowling green, then there will still be a solid bias to the scoreboard end.

4. As for being a decent size, gimme a break, unless they've sown some lovely couch grass onto the bitumen behind the eastern goals, it's still a bloody small ground. Two kicks going downhill, three coming back up it.

Conclusion: it was in awful condition last time it saw any public sporting activity (hence the school closed it down immediately). Now, we wait with bated breath to view the glory that will be the 2009 version. I trust it will have put its 18 months out of footy to great use and, just like Ben Cousins, it will have gone through a complete and effective rehabilitation.

The ground looks an absolute treat with a thick cover of couch grass but the fall is still there! Our guys are really keen for the year ahead, playing the entire year away from home last year was pretty bloody ordinary.

I believe that the pre christmas sessions are under way but the pre-season will give us an idea how we are looking for 2009. Despite being relegated last year we were relatively competitive and with our young group having another year together I would expect the Friars to be competitive in 2009.

Good to hear, I'm sure the Friars back on their normal deck will be a fearsome combination for 2009.

Perhaps my last outing on the school oval has clouded my judgement re: dimensions. I just remember the home team managed to pump the ball out of the guts with monotonous regularity that day. It MAY have made the ground seem smaller than it really was!

For starters, the 50 M lines are correct so unless you can unload on 2 x 75 M barrels you may have a chance….I am keen to see this!

Hey all, long time reader, first time poster.

From MAPPA "I was one of the unfortunate souls who played on the ground in Round 18 2007. The ground was bloody awful to put it mildly and that's what I was basing my comments on."

Mappa my poor misguided friend the ground was not half as bad as the extremely poor effort you and your lot served up that day. I beleive it was somewhere in the region of over 100 points. But hey when we are upset we often lash out at those who are on higher ground.

Anyway, yeah the ground was looking average towards the end of 2007, but my fellow posters it is now looking a treat. The boys have been licking thier lips at training and cant wait to have some serious hit outs there. Unfortunately for all you other teams it looks like the "House of Pain" is back and ready to serve out some beatings.

What world are you in? It has a very wide far wing, but one good kick out of the centre square and you are at full forward. I have seen a goal kicked from the centre too- albeit with a strong breeze.

No, it's not as big as the MCG. Decent size though and bigger than most.

Sorry GW, I played in the early game and we had a spirited win and sung the song with ACDC-like volume in the rooms afterwoods.

Getting a little long in the tooth, slow in the leg, and poor in the form to play in the late game, although as it turns out I did play one game in the Seniors in 2007. It was against the 'Friars at BSO and had a win that day too

OC I've seen plenty of footy at Friars over the years and never seen anything like that!

Anyway the message to all is that the ground is in super knick and will host some good footy in 2009, especially looking forward to our hit out with Rupo as we had a couple of really good tussles last year after having our dacks pulled down in 2007 by them!

Given my home ground for the best part of the last 20 years (Trinity) was 172m long and 141m wide, a ground which is 149m x 120m (according to Tigers Nuts measurements) is pretty small.

Mind you, only you really seem to think that size does matter.

Appear to have been hit quite hard then last year kingbrown - fair enough, may have to expect quite a bit from rupertswood then if that was the casualties list.
From what i know of NOBS in 08, their injury list was quite as dramatic, at the wrong time of the year. i tip NOBS to be a clear force in D1 in 2009 with no team coming close with many of the young players in the senior side and young first year players stepping up in 09 from their premiership side in the twos.
Also beleive Aquinas could be a bit of a dark horse - having some decent recruits combined with late 08 form and decent numbers at the start of 09 preseason!!!!!!

KB I don't follow this message can you please explain as we don't have a P Cahill at Frairs except for the Prinicipal of the school whose name is Paul Cahill!

The list of returning players is very impressive and if you play the way you did in 2007 you are going to be hard to knock off!

I think that D1 will be strong with relegated clubs being competitive and promoted clubs who dominated their section last year.

Yep, I know that i have written the Reds out of the finals but they just don't seem to have anyone to kick enough goals. Forwardline was an issue in 2008, and unless a couple of big forwards come in, then it will probably still be an issue.

Can anyone give me any joy on the Reds pre-season, and also on what the rooms are looking like ?
