I was thrilled that i got to see my favourite player last night in the hopman cup final in what is going to be his last year on tour.

The man is a legend, whether it be for his tennis or otherwise he was an absolute champ.

I have no doubt that had he been a little less crazy he would have won at least another 5 slams. (but then we wouldnt love him as much :p)

Probably by favourite Safin match was when he beat Federer in the Semi's of the 05 Aus Open

Marat, you are a legend

Yep, Safin = King.

Is he 100% retiring this year? Hopefully if he gets some good grand slam results he could reconsider?

At his best, he was the sole greatest player of the 00's (yes, even better than Federer at his best).

Unfortunately for Safin, his best in grand slams never came as often as it should've, mostly because of his mentality during numerous matches.

I wish I could watch the 05 Aust Open semi-final on dvd or something, because I was overseas and missed it (only Aust Open I have missed in living memory). I've read about the match and know that it was considered the match of 2005, and one of the best in recent tennis history.

Gotta love his persona too.

I have always thought the same thing.

He has been my favourite player since Sampras retired and agree with the rest, the match against Fed at the Aus Open 2005 was simply unbelieveable. It is what Safin supporters always thought, that he could beat Federer when they were both playing at their best.

Another great match was seeing him win the Aus Open final against Lleyton. While I did want to see an Australian win their home slam, I wanted Marat to win more. It would have been absolute crap if he had gone through his career only winning 1 slam.

I've always been surprised by his hate and lack of consistent results at Wimbledon. You would have thought that the grass would suit him well, big serve, good movement around the court. But his mental game cannot match the uneven bounce and unpredeictable nature of the grass.

The Other best match I have seen him play was against Sampras at the 2001 US open final, he beat Pete in straight sets and at that point everyone thought that there was the next long-term number 1 who would win several slams. It never happened which is disappointing for Marat and his fans.

Was looking forward to watching him in action at Kooyong this week, but just heard on the news that he has pulled out . Hopefully he will be playing when I am at the Australian Open.

The sweetest backhand ever imo. Probably my fav player post-Agassi as well.

Can't agree with him being better than Fed at his best though.

The only tennis player who's mathces I will tape and watch later :thumbsu:

2005 Australian Open was awesome... I had the whole tourney off with a batch of severe tonsilitis, but his performances managed to distract me for most of the 2 weeks :thumbsu:

I guess your a Federer supporter.

I do prefer Federer to Safin, although I am not a huge Federer fan. There is just something about Safin's unprofessionalism that annoys me. There is no doubting his talent.

Safin is a gun. there aren't enough players around like him any more.

A great player, and charisma to boot. One of my all time favs. Hope he wins the Open this year, and breaks at least a dozen racquets in the process. Hopefully he's got the eye candy in his courtside box again this year too :D

^When you say unprofessionalism, are you talking about his on-court persona, or his lack of sticking to cliches with the media?

I see your point. He does bring colour to the game, yet when Hewett behaves in a similar way, he is often labeled as a sook and a nuisance by the general public. Hewett has won as many grand slams as Safin.

i'm loving this thread!!!!

i'm a massive Safin fan.. i'm dying to go and watch him in his first game.
like someone said.. Safin is a legend
his soo bloody Hot mad ohh soo entertaining.. no dull moments with safin games

not a Federer fan.. would not watch him even if u paid me.. BORINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Seriously?

Safin acts like a good-natured guy with a self-control problem. Hewitt acts like a complete prat, regardless of whether he's winning or losing.

I'll admit that Safin is more charismatic than Hewett, but he is still a tool.
