2009 Media Thread

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Noticed we don't usually post when new articles come in off the Saints site and Herald sun, so i though it would be best to have thread where all the news goes that usually if they were in their own thread would go postless. Saves us time sifting through all the threads and news sites.

Also any interviews coming up of Saints players/coaches, post in here to give us a heads up.

So pretty much throw in here articles not really deserving of a new thread, and heads-ups about Saints interviews on SEN or TV.

Key position player Khan Haretuku is a graduate of St Kilda's NSW scholarship program

WITH THE game swelling in the Sydney area, St Kilda has led the way in harvesting talent through its New South Wales scholarship program.
The Saints have Khan Haretuku and Blake McGrath on their rookie list, both graduates of the program, while teenagers Kane Murphy, Josh Duncan and Jackson Ferguson have also committed to scholarships.
Danny Ryan, who has joined the club as player development/opposition analyst after serving a part-time role in Sydney, says the Saints have a good crop coming through – led by the 208cm McGrath who was taken in December's rookie draft.

Demolition has commenced at Moorabbin Reserve

Demolition commenced on the grandstands at Linen House Oval Moorabbin, the home of the Saints since 1965. The Club recently signed an agreement with Kingston City Council that will see parts of the Moorabbin reserve opened up for the local community to use and enjoy as the Saints prepare for their move to Seaford in 2010 and their New Elite Training and Administration facility to be built in a partnership with Frankston City Council, The Brumby State Government and the AFL.

Steven Baker, seen here at Wednesday's training session, has impressed Leigh Montagna with his determination over summer

WHILE he stopped short of claiming this has been St Kilda’s best ever pre-season, Leigh Montagna says he has been impressed by the work of his teammates over the summer months.
“At the end of the day, pre-seasons are pre-seasons. They’re all roughly the same, you work hard, you do the weights and you do the running,” the hard-working Saints’ midfielder said.

Tom Lynch about to hit the track at Linen House Oval on Wednesday

ST KILDA’S NAB Cup team is likely to be filled with plenty of new faces according to midfielder Leigh Montagna.

Speaking before training at Moorabbin on Wednesday morning, Montagna said he had been impressed with the new batch of Saints and expected them to be given plenty of game time in the lead-up to the 2009 home and away season.

Re: Media Thread

Great idea CHB. The boys really put out some dribble at times, so I read and don't bother posting. But in this format it works well.

Noticed Monty's comments :

“It is an exciting time. It’s probably the first time since my draft in ’01 that we’ve had six or seven kids come through together and some really quality players too,” Montagna said.

“We’re hoping to get a lot out of these guys this year, we’ve got guys like Tom Lynch, Alistair Smith and Paul Cahill who have got bodies that can play senior footy early.

“We’re looking for some guys to step up – we have probably lacked some quality kids in the past – and these guys can do that."

Cop that Macca, Armo and Jack!!! Probably throw in Rob Eddy and Gears as well (as young promoted rookies).

Futher on: Moorabbin Reserve demolition begins

Noted that they are soon doing memorabilia pieces regarding the grandstand.

Dunno if it qualifies as media however. But I thought i would chuck it out there.

Re: Media Thread

Well I'm not looking to buy the seat that Molly sat on.

Not looking for anything near the umpires race which would have 20 years of saliva on it.

Maybe the section of the floor where Ricky Watt landed after Plugger punched him.

Possibly the BBQ that Jacko used to bring to the games after he finished playing (dunno how he managed to get it in - there was smoke everywhere one day).

Re: Media Thread

I missed this article the first time around :

Tom Lynch lives around the corner from St Kilda and has always supported the AFL club.

Alistair Smith's flight from Perth on Tuesday to his new home was only the third time he has visited Melbourne.

The backgrounds of the Saints' six new recruits are a microcosm of the randomness and massive changes involved in the national draft.

Lynch was the Saints' first pick at No.13 and had the look on Wednesday of an 18-year-old who knows he is living his dream, in every possible way.
Asked what player number he might have, Lynch smiled and replied it would definitely be at the high end of the locker room.

That prompted one journalist to joke that he might receive No.35 - worn by newly-retired club legend Robert Harvey. "I think they should retire that number," Lynch then said, without much humour in his voice at all.

Smith, also 18, comes from the WA country town of Northam, outside of Perth, and he is boarding with a host family. "It's very hard, especially for me, because I'm from the country - I normally wait for the sun to come up, I couldn't see that in the morning," he said.

Nick Heyne is also from the country, but as a Gippsland native he has plenty of company on the St Kilda list. The Gippsland contingent at Moorabbin includes established players Jason Gram and Brendon Goddard.
Regardless of his background, each youngster who joins an AFL club soon has his concept of pain redefined. "It's been great - Tuesday, I could hardly walk, I spent a lot of time in the ice baths," Heyne said. "Tom, Colm (Begley) and I were down here on Monday and Tom and I did about 20 minutes of fartlek running, then we had a weights session in the afternoon, so I was a bit sore all over."

The Saints took Begley, the former Brisbane player from Ireland, with the last pick of the draft.

Rhys Stanley and Paul Cahill, their other draftees, are from South Australia. Stanley also has a local connection at the Saints - like Sam Fisher, he hails from the Riverland.

It must be hard to run and fart at the same time I guess.

Re: Media Thread

Old but some may not have seen before :

Northam footballer Alistair Smith received the news of a lifetime on Saturday morning when he was picked up by St Kilda in the National Australian Football League draft. Chosen at number 64 the 18-year-old moved to Melbourne yesterday to begin his career in the national league.

Known as Ali to friends and family, he grew up on a farm outside of Northam and is one of four sons to Kevin and Wendy Smith.
He attended St Joseph’s School from Pre-primary to year 10 before moving to Perth to complete Years 11 and 12 at Wesley College.

Ali played junior football in Northam and his first team was the Saints. “It is a bit of a coincidence that my first football team was the Saints and now I am going to play for the Saints in the AFL competition,” Ali said.
His family have had a long tradition with the Federal Football Club and it was with the Feddies that Ali had his first taste of senior football.

This year he played with the Perth Colts and was the only player from his club to be picked in the draft. He is one of 16 Western Australians to be picked and the only one going to St Kilda.

Ali will live with a family in St Kilda while he settles into the new city. “My whole life has turned around in four days as I found out I had been chosen on Saturday and will move to Melbourne on Tuesday,” Ali said. “It is an exciting time for me and my family.”

Clinton Jones works to fill Robert Harvey's boots

Ken Piesse | January 25, 2009 12:00am

THE young players from far away used to be tagged "March champions" - train the house down over summer, only to go missing once the real stuff started.
But Perth's Clinton Jones defied that trend last year and is now one of many at St Kilda hoping for a midfield promotion with the retirement of the club's champion running man, Robert Harvey.

Late-blossoming Jones, 25, has once again been a star of pre-season, having not missed a session since late-October.

Full story here.

He's 25?
He looks 15.

Re: Media Thread

Look a bit more closely young lady, every day of 25.
You reckon?

Ok. 15 is stretching it. But could easily pass as a new draftee.

Re: Media Thread

when i originally saw him i thought he was like 18, but 25! i really hope he gets his skills par with his fitness, than he will be a super gun. Also has to make better decisions

Sorry for being the glass half empty type - but I believe it was Madonna that famously sang "I've heard it all before..."

Honestly every year Dal or Monty come out with this jibber jabber. PROVE IT! Every other team in the comp is also doing pre-season and I can guarantee they are also working at 99% at least!

I only get annoyed at this because each year they say it and believe it, but in reality they are probably just cruising and wondering why it's so easy this year!!!

Retire IP Robert Harvey:(

Re: Media Thread

if Harves was still there like a midfield or fitness coach, im sure he would of pushed them to the at most brink!! but i hope his right...

Re: Media Thread

If we can keep the 3 big puppies (King, Gardi and Kosi) on the park it will help, but we need to do a lot more 3rd man up. Goddard and Gram are experts at this, and their possible move into the midfield will help the ruckmen no end.

Re: Media Thread

Over a longer time I hope that Macca can turn into an athletic ruckman/forward, and over an even longer time McGrath may be even better.
Kingy is not too bad around the ground as can be seen by his tackle stats.
Gardiner in his recent form is probably more of a pure ruckman.
Kosi is obviously a player who can also ruck.

Re: Media Thread

I'm a rap for Macca - he's got those sticky fingers and kicks beautifully for a big fella. I am hoping that once he gets a bit of size about him he will become a dangerous forward. Not sure where he will get to as a ruckman though.

Re: Media Thread

Real happy to hear from the Lenny interview that Gardi's up and going. Will make a huge difference if he stays fit.

The Lendog mentioned Armo and Gears a couple of times - maybe they will make the step that we've been waiting for this year.

Classic question from some pommy ****teur at the end - the Wiz is back!!!
